Always A Hint &mdash 03/10/07 - 02:23:56 PM
Of the Beatles going on in your songs Vic and now you suprise us with some slide to remind us of George Harrison and it really sits well within the song.

fab &mdash 03/11/07 - 01:36:51 PM
it originally didn't sound like a beatle thing with just a acoustic laying down the sketch track. funny how something can evolve. the slide parts definatley topped it off. the slide solo at the beginning is 2 lead lines, one playing a 5th higher. george did that alot on his lines.

Thanks for taking the time appreciated!

by George, this is nice. i love the chord changes, vocals are great, and the slide... the guitar leads fit just right.

are there a few diminished chords in there?

thanks

by-product of george &mdash 03/11/07 - 01:47:10 PM
thank you very much. i always liked how beatles and george in his solo years used diminishing chords. i tend to incorporate them as well often. i don't keep track of chord names, but in the chorus even the diminishing chords diminish!

funny and ironic, your song took the high road and mine took the low road. ha!
Thanks again!

Cool that you liked this. i try to look at each section individually and figure in counter parts where i can. after the basic parts are down then i can just play along with additional instruments. actually comes together fairly quickly at that point.

Thanks for taking some time to listen and comment appreciated!

i'm usually guessing where its going next as well. i had only the verse chords, laid those down, then went from there. i tend to think the song builds itself. it seemed to tell me what to add or take out. gotta like it when that happens!

Thanks Tom for taking the time!

Hard not to hear George &mdash 03/10/07 - 08:36:22 PM
as others have said. But there's so much pure Vic going on with the complexity of the arrangement. Love it. You have a real talent for making everything rich so after you think you've peaked in the chorus along comes a break break that goes one better -and the verse was already pretty damn cool.

george whispered in my ear &mdash 03/11/07 - 02:17:36 PM
i was almost going to title this tribute to george but unfortunatley with his passing on _not so much a lucky guy. on second thought, i quess with his religious beliefs it wouldn't be off the mark. i just fininshed reading the book 'here there and everywhere' by geoff emerick, the recording engineer to the beatles. that may have left an impression on me on how they built there stuff. if you do a beatle kinda sound you always have to include a bridge. i think theres a law about that...at least thats the word on the street.

i think this is one of those songs thats been sitting in the back of my mind for quite some time and finally came together. i knew i wanted it to feature some slide work from the git-go. i learned slide work from playing along georges solo albums. to me, he and duane allman had the sweetest tones.

Thanks again Tom, appreciated!

although since dirk and nasty where not on speaking terms they would only do there parts seperately, usually in the water closet, barry sat through the whole thing, never leaving his drums, even after everyone else left for the night. barry has always been quoted as saying "i'm just lucky to be here."

George believed in Reincarnation &mdash 03/11/07 - 01:36:59 PM
I'm always getting CSNY, so I'm sorry to go here, but maybe you're the way George is coming back... you nailed that classic flowing gentle melodic Harrison vibe... and this is not a bad thing to be compared with the likes of the underrated Beatle, who's solo work think was most impressive of all them... very mature song construction, production, singing, and guitar performance... it all comes together here...

always was a fan. i think when George came into his own, he had a style that has, to this day stuck with me. maybe its just me. but he sure seems to be popping up alot recently. who knows maybe Geoerge was whispering in my ear, because this song came along very smoothly and i felt i was just sitting in. wierd!

Thanks again Scott for taking the time.

One of your best Vicar. Sorry for beating a dead Dark Horse...but this is hauntingly Harrison-esque (as others have rightly noted). Your slide work herein is right on the money....just beautiful! Love the lyrics, the melody and your vocal delivery is superb. Radio ready!

dark horse &mdash 03/11/07 - 02:59:15 PM
dead dark horse...oooo, your going to get letters on that one. i think this is a personal favorite as well. i sat down and recorded just the verse chords. it just built from there. theres little fragments that have been floating around in my head that finally found there place. we've talked about how the song tells us what to do, and this is one of those. the slide itself i've had for so many years that its pitted from string wear. i think its aluminum with a painted coating, they don't make these anymore, for that reason alone i'm sure, but it has a real warm sound. it was fun to get around to throwing some in.

Thank you suh! (with fake military salute)

RE getting "letters..." I get letters here at MJ no matter what I say or do. I've pretty much stopped caring.

Anyway, no disrespect to the Dark Horse intended as he is my favorite musician of all time and the man whose music initially influenced me to search for God and Truth. I owe him everything in a sense. ETERNAL MEMORY!

A great comparison.
Didn't mean to rhyme, bu it works.
The slide is a welcome sound when its done so fine. Love the way George broke out the slide on the Lennon tunes that they put together after John passed. Was it 'Free as a bird' or the other one. I gotta go listen. Thanks for sharing.
I think i compared you to the Beatles in the past and you talked of the dropping bass line. This one reminds me more of the solo George.
Enough about George.
Vic is right on here. Nice style.
Well done.

it poped in my head as well - the song free as a bird, you got that right. i think its the pace. i remember the video of him doing the slide overdubs. hunched over deep into it. outside of the beginning part (which is two lines , one a fifth higher) i was doing the same thing 'cause i wanted to do it all the way through in one take. well actually it took three times. i would of called a tribute to george except his lyrics where a bit inttrospective then what i wrote.

Thanks Timothy appreciate the time out to listen and comment!

Yes, there's George in the slide parts... &mdash 03/12/07 - 08:10:44 PM
And there are also some Ringo bits in the drums... And there's one great dollop of Badfinger in there as well...

This is another ear candy treat... I like how much melody you've squeezed into this...

There was a brief period when this sort of pop rock thing was all over the radio, and now you'd hardly hear it anywhere... This is what makes MacJams so cool... We get to hear the Vic Holmans of this world, whether they're the flavor of the month or not...

Thanks Ed! p.s. check out my collab with bud.

Funny to see you guys talk about Badfinger. When the single 'Come and Get It' came out on the Apple lable, sad to admit i thought it was the Beatles. Little did i know i think Paul had anounced he was out and released McCartney that old classic with 'oo you and 'maybe im amazed' to mention a few.
Come and get it shuffled up on my pod just yesterday...I was 14 yrs old for a few minutes.
just remanicing.

as i remember they where 4 guys who existed in black and white for a while. when color became all the rage, they were seen with very colorful and wide ties. rumor is they broke up because thy were jealous of each others wide ties. yes this is a tune that you can kick back and strum the guitar until the strings go out of tune to form another chord. :-)

Very Vic! &mdash 03/14/07 - 11:42:42 PM
What I like about your music is that it definately has your stamp on it - the Vic Holman sound.Your voice has one of those inimatable qualities that makes people warm to your style (excuse me while I just speak for the world, although I'm just a cleaner by trade).I often get hooked on artists because of their original choice of chords, words and that something extra such as the voice - its what makes albums collectable.Love the little major melody that comes in between the verses, and the bitter sweet lyrics.I dont download much on macjams, but I think once I get an ipod there are some artists here who I would come back to and get all their stuff to listen to one after another like an album.CHeers Vic - enjoyed it

colors is a good way to put it. if i remember right jimi hendrix would always talk about sound as colors. lennon also talked of a visual representation. at times i try to think along that or in textures of sound. it's alot easier then remembering chord names.

Did you get George to come back and play slide for you on this? Once again I sound like a broken record, but your guitars are just great.

I heard the chorus a little differently. I would have changed it to be:

It's a wonderful life
been waiting so long,
waiting so long,
waiting so long, (with each line descending melodically)
and then a repeat.

And a bridge! That something that people don't use enough in their songs.

Thanks again Vic. Great song.
