Description:
A couple of weeks ago I posted Huey, Dewey and Louie along with a collab invitation.
This resulted in four collabs, and I felt that two of these were compatibe, namely:
'Ways Of Living - w/ Cori Ander' by paddler
'Near the River (w/Cori Ander)' by rschletty
So I imported the two and edited them togehter to this song, with the titles interlaced to 'River of Life'.
Noteworthy is that Paddler and Rschletty never listened to each others version. Paddler posted first and Richard purposely did not listen to any other collab versions while he did his version.
Artwork by Richard Schletty.
Lyrics:
PADDLER .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . RSCHLETTY
Never see you
Only hear you
Do you feel like
You were born to
Discover new ways of living?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of never ending dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . through a pass of rising rocks
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . over a field of whispering wheat
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . golden sun and stars under a red sand arch
In the darkness
Of the evening
Do you ever
Feel like reaching
Into your very soul and smiling
Climbed only half the way
Tryin to make it to the top of the chain
Guess I'll save it for another day
Whatever forever - forever can wait
Seems like we've just made it all -
But living
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of never ending dreams
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I see reflections in a silver sky
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I hear the murmurs of ten thousand souls
Climbed only half the way
Tryin to make it to the top of the chain
Guess I'll save it for another day
Whatever forever - forever can wait
Seems like we've just made it all -
But living
- - - i n s t r u m e n t a l - - -
Across the ocean I'm calling to you
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Near the river of dreams
Can you tell me what you want me to do
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Never ending dreams
All the time I just find I am dying to love you
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I feel those who ride the waves
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . of time outside the inside caves

Great stuff! &mdash 03/12/07 - 01:30:32 PM
Fantastic music here by some of my favorite people at MacJams! Wonderful work by all, and a nice mix, Johannes! [ Reply to This ]
Wow, this is amazing... &mdash 03/12/07 - 01:46:20 PM
What a great collab!! And the parts were done separately, how amazingly well this worked out! Faved and downloaded.
I love this!!! [ Reply to This ]

Smiling &mdash 03/12/07 - 01:57:09 PM
Love the stanza "In the darkness of the evening, do you ever feel like reaching into your very soul and smiling?" This version folds the writing between the two songs effortless, altho there are audio differences between the two songs, as if the vocals were cut and pasted from two differently conceived versions as opposed to re-conceived and redone to meld them better. This is wonderful collab, with wonderfully rounded acoustic guitar, electric mandolin like lead, mellow electric piano, and just the right organ. There is a disconnect in my ears between the mid-EQd AM radio feel of paddler's vocals (which also sometimes get too soft) and the low end heavy and perhaps overly reverbed RSchletty vocals. (Maybe the reverb on RS should cut out the low end, too, so just his highs get verbed.) The ending (I would let the electric piano tail off and not cut its reverb so fast), plus a few moments of out-of-sync playing and unnecessary vocal tricks employed toward the end, don't seem to fit the straightforward elegance of the collab. That being said (and I realize these are picky comments), this is more than a heartwarming collab and wonderful track. It is also an inspiring event. Such a fine trio of human beings. Thank you Tobin &mdash 03/12/07 - 03:06:50 PM
Thanks a lot for your care Tobin!
Your ears didn't fail you. You are right on spot. It isn't edited the ambitious way; by building it up a project with all tracks separate. Instead I made it a fast and easy way; just downloaded their respective posts, cut and joined pieces together.
So there are differences. For example paddlers track has drums and other instruments, while Richards contains only the basic guitar track with vocals added. Also the sound spaces are quite different, Richards track is for example more compressed (which I've tried to compensate for by setting levels).
During the short mail eschanges with Paddler and Richard before posting, I found that all three of us seem to have things we would have wanted to make better. For example I am myself not totally pleased with the tuning of my guitars. But we found the quality wantings to be quite evenly spread over different aspects of the song. Just enough for a nice musical experience I would personally say.
But If the song attracts interest from the MJ community we might take it on in a more ambitious way - that might involve re-writing of some parts of the lyrics for matching. Furhter re-recordning of tracs etc. That would be my personal guess from the short communications with Richard and Paddler. Then there is the reality of time too ... other projects and ideas waiting to be realized. So this might also be the only version.

Amazing &mdash 03/12/07 - 03:30:12 PM
Whoooo, another one of these like we did with me and Dennex Donor! It's amazing how these things slot together so spontaneously.
Lovely how both songs interact and blend with each other as well as with the original guitar track.
You'll be able to release a whole album of these spontaneous collaborations the way you're going! [ Reply to This ]
Haha &mdash 03/12/07 - 03:50:06 PM
Haha, yes .. hope more of them will appear :-)
Might as well give a reference to the song your'e talking about, (I have been thinking of it a lot while mixing the present one):

And when I went there now, I found that 'ZOI' has managed to fave us TWICE .. the neatest trick I've seen at MJ. Doofy class! How did you do ZOI?

Interesting mix of styles and ideas Curry &mdash 03/13/07 - 06:25:23 AM
Some lovely harmonies in there - as well as the beautiful guitar work and smooth, yet contrasting vocals. Seems to work pretty well to me, although the original instruymental version is still pretty hard to beat.
Cheers,

A twofer! &mdash 03/13/07 - 01:41:15 PM
It's uncanny how well the two collaborations fit together. I remember you posting another double-collaboration like this some time ago and this works just as well as that one.
I have to say that my favorite part of this was the little electric piano parts that popped up here and there throughout the song. Although just about everything else sounded very nicely to my ears, too.
Lovely!

...how 'songlike' your melodies and song structures are from the start... Although they are the starting point, they sound like they were written to wrap around the vocal and instrumental parts that have been contributed...
