Watch a video of this song here:

I was watching Jewel performing an acoustic set on TV. She was singing a beautiful heartfelt personal song. As I was listening I started wondering hmmm...what kind of guitar is she playing? Here is Jewel pouring her heart out and all I care about is what kind of guitar she plays? Then the line first two lines came to me..."do you care what it is i have to say, do you care what kind of guitar i play?" I then opened up my laptop and starting writing the rest of the lyrics. Before Jewel was finished with her concert I had wrote twice as many lyrics as what finally ended up in this song.
The music started with a little tapping riff I came up with for another song...but i decided to make it its own thing...and here it is. Any and all comments are welcome....especially about the mix and how it sounds on your systems. Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics:
WHAT DO YOU CARE?©2007 Ray Kainz
Do you care what it is I have to say
care what kind of guitar I play
Do you care if I’m straight if I’m gay
party all night or sleep all day
Do you care if I drink if I smoke
If I laugh at all your jokes
if I drink pepsi or snort coke
or dip my toast in runny yolks
Do you care what it is I care about
care for some kim-chee, sauerkraut
Do you care if my faith’s in doubt
if I free-style or write it all out
Do you care bout the voices in my head
where you think I’m going when I’m dead
Do you care who’s sleeping in my bed
If I wear adidas or wear Keds
Do you care about the cold and hungry child
and all those who’ve been exiled
Do you care that I dare to get Buck Wild!
Do you care that my hair is always in style
DO YOU CARE?
WHAT DO YOU CARE?
Do you care that I’m gaining some extra weight
Do you care about the current interest rate
Do you care that I pray and meditate
Do you care that the hour’s getting late
Do you care if she gives you a second look
Or if she’s cute and cleans and cooks
Do you care if your name is written in the book
Do you care if the president’s a crook
Do you care about the dumb the deaf the lame
Do you care about the one who only wins the game
Do you claim everyone just brings you shame
but you always tend to do the same
Do you care about the chemicals in your beer
nozone, flyzone, atmoshphere
Someone whispers in your ear
The only thing to fear is fear
Do you care what’s really right and wrong
Do you care about the pizza in Hong-Kong
Do you care if grandma wears a thong
Shall I go on and on and on
DO YOU CARE?
WHAT DO YOU CARE?

A cornucopia of entertaining rhymes, impeccable production, witty yet passionately careless and brilliant performance, adding up to something greater than the whole. Great drumming. Love the chorus hook, the news break, the guitar solo and effects. And, yes, I love it when you go on and on...
eleveneyes
cornucopia (horn of plenty) is one of my favorite words. I kept the number of different elements/parts to a minimum and tried to maximize the quality of each. I'm glad you found the whole to be greater than the sum because that's what i was going for. I don't know who's drumming on this...but if I ever find out i'll pass along the compliment!

We'll make enough love for everyone!
chuck_t
Love the guitars and drums, really tight sound too. Is this you playing a real drum kit, or samples? Liking the lyrics too, very funny!
eleveneyes
The drums are GB audio loops with a few midi samples thrown in here and there. I wish I could play drums that well! Thanks for stopping by!

This is awesome. Brilliant use of disparate rythyms, and the vocals/lyrics are simply freakin great. What a talent you have. The production is top shelf, especially the break you display such producer chops.
The solo had me captivated. Man I wish i culd write like this. Powerful sheet
estellie
this song is really really good. yeah, the chorus is pretty. all the sounds come together around your nice lyrics, the break is amazing (I like windchimes at the end, myself). And all I have to say is good things, but actually, your brilliance is clearly in the keywords...
I wish I could say I found this song b/c I did a search for nosehair, but oh well. That will be somebody else's treat to find...
eleveneyes
not sure why i included nosehair in the search words....i think maybe cuz nosehair rhymes with care. Nonetheless glad you got a kick out of it. Thanks for stopping by Estella!

My only problem with this is that you don't leave any room for Wierd Al to paridy this when you are a big STAR... really Ray, there are a few folks that perk me up right away when I see they have a new post... you are at the top of that list... all of my reasons are replete in this post.. you are clever while poignant... musically exellent, and a production Guru... I like the emotional turn as the song winds down... wrapped in this lighthearted and whimsical energy is a somber more serious heart peekig through... that was my impression
For the record... I care
eleveneyes
...is spot on. Seriousness wrapped in whim - that's me! Thanks for your commets Scott, I really appreciate it. It's abundantly clear that you care!

XTC meets Zappa in a dark alley and they infuse some tapping and power chords together and...
This is great and really dam original.
Awesome like all of your stuff.
Yummy!!!!
eleveneyes
I care about pudding too. I used to work at a Pizza Hut when I was a teen and the best thing about that job (the only good thing actually) was I could eat all the pudding from the salad bar I wanted and believe me, I wanted pudding all the time! They eventually went out of business....I think their pudding expenses got too high.

This is so appealing on so many levels. Very cool hard rocking chorus, quirky rhythms, funny lyrics and a very tasty guitar solo - what's not to like?
Although... the words 'grandma' and 'thong' should never, EVER, be in the same sentence. Way too disturbing...
Another instant hit!
You da man!

This is what I call "the global enchilada" - you manage to hit it from A to Z - humor, seriousness, superficiality, depth - it's groovy, funky, rockin', poppin' - holy smokes! What a great tune, enjoyed every twist and turn, your performances are hot, excellent vocals, killer guitar and production, love the many different rap rhythms you incorporate. Great lyrics! This needs to be on the radio, man - AS-IS! You should really upload this to Neil Young's Living With War site - not every song on there is about war - and this song really speaks to a few topics that people need to hear. Fav'd and downloaded - what a treat this tune is!
eleveneyes
Hey, thanks for the tip on the Neil Young site. Much appreciated!
Now I'm gonna go make an omelette.

This is so slick and rockin, with such a great funky groove! You really pulled off a magnificent tune here. Such inventive structure and changes with incredible balance of energy. I'm blown away at how well done this is, though it's what I have come to expect from you.
You really have hit the right spot, brilliant production and originality and more than a pleasure to listen to.
eleveneyes
thanks a ton for stopping by and lending you time, ears, thoughts and comments. Much appreciated Peter!

Very original and strong rock track. WOWSERS! This thing is so tight as grandma's thong. Brilliant production as well. Big bravo!

Rebsie
I do love your lyrics. They're intelligent, quirky and dark, and you still manage to keep them so tight and punchy everything fits together in perfect snugness. It's a real work of craftsmanship. And the magnificent performance and immaculate production rounds it off nicely.
Much respect, Ray! :)
Sil-VER
This one... great!
Thanks
Silver
This one just kept getting better as it went, blew past most of the adjectives I might throw at it and left me shouting "yeah!" No weak spots; musically and lyrically, this just works. Every day I turn on commercial radio out of habit - and then slap it off in frustration - is another day I wish stuff like this was out there. Dreadmon sez it; this needs to be on the radio just the way it is.
Thanks.
Vic Holman
between weird al and faith no more! some serious craziness, all good. always fun to hear your stuff.
funny alot a times i'm paying more attention to the gear also.
SEAC99
haha this is amazing.. great ryming great lyrics. haha this is great!
guitapick
Can definitely see where this would have just poured out of you.
Nicely done. Love the news clips at the end.
Is that Marshall JMP the midi programmable preamp? I used to have one. Great sound.
eleveneyes
The amp is a 1979 Marshall JMP 50w head. I don't even think it has an FX loop and it for sure doesn't have MIDI capabilites. I love that amp - it sounds fantastic and has no bells or whistles, one channel, no reverb - perfect for the studio.

What Do You Care?
will you marry me?
eleveneyes
I was hoping for a more romantic proposal....maybe over a nice fancy dinner....or under the light of the moon.....and where's my ring? I demand a ring before I give you an answer!

What Do You Care?
Awesome!!!!!! I love the Satch behind the rhymes, Outside of that, You can give "System Of A Down" a run for there money.
"Can You Care" will be in my head for days.....
" Do You Care"
One of the best I heard all year....
perceptualvortex
So damn good and clean and great energy and rocking singing and guitars that kick ass and fraken brilliant and funny and superbly mixed and did I mention this is so damn good??!
racerat
about this song. Great production. Quirky--then rockin then back again. The chorus is ace, leaves we dying for it's return the second time. Really cool track.
PS> I also love the story about where the lyrics came from.....with Jewel, I don't question why you just drifted off in your mind and started thinking about her guitar, makes perfect sense to me.
eleveneyes
...I'm not the only gear head whose attention quickly turns toward the "stuff". Thanks for stopping by and checking my song out Philip.

Great lyrics, love the bass and drums - so tight and just that little bit outside the square - and the guitars. Love the production you get and your excellent vocals.
; ) "Sycophant" is not my favourite word - for the record it's "plinth" - but in your case I'll make an exception. For the first time in a long while I found myself reading ahead in the lyrics to see where you were taking us next.
Excellent stuff!
Neil
Epileptic Gibbon
... a masterclass in how to do this kind of song. Typically witty, funny and clever, but without dumbing down, plus musically and production-wise first-rate. Consistently your stuff amazes me so please keep up the great work.
Epileptic Gibbon
I meant that the song was funny without dumbing down, not clever and witty without dumbing down, which wouldn't make sense. Doh!

Ha! Great!
Fun and also serious. Superb production and performance. Very professional! A kind of song that should run on the radio stations day and night. Impressing!
lavalamp
You've got a nice sound. Like the little spoken/guitar solo. Great lyrics. You sound like an old band I used to like, Firehose. Have you ever heard of them?
eleveneyes
fiREHOSE was great, not to be confused with Firehouse who I don't like at all! I was also a fan of the Minutemen back in the day.
As Anthony K sings in the RHCP song Good Time Boys:
if you don't believe me you can ask john doe
'cause his heart is made of glory and his voice is made of gold
he'll tell you in a minute about the men he knows
he'll tell you 'bout the band called firehose

Hey Ray,
It's good to hear new music from you. The mix on my system sounds awesome! Whatever it is you are doing, keep doing it. Nicely balanced, all the frequencies really occupy their own space, nothing clashes, no mud, no harshness, well done dude. You rawk! Why aren't you signed yet?
iam0pen
Straight forward. Message is clear and the way you sing it...is keeping a listeners attention...very demanding! And that is a good thing.
Did you use all the hardware you mentioned?
That must be realy complex.
o0o
eleveneyes
yes, I used all the hardware mentioned. I have lots more but I only listed the pieces used in creating this song on this song page. not complex at all. quite simple actually. Thanks for stopping by and for your commets. Much appreciated!

I downloaded this one in a hurry. Aside from the obvious things that everyone else is cmplimenting about this song I love how the melody slides up and down between stanzas.
Outstanding.
