Description:
Instrumental pastiche of sounds, beats, voices and noises which represent the sea of antiwar sentiments in which America is drowning. So much is being said and so little being done. The voices of outrage meld with the voices of indifference to create this din of dismay. Thick and complicated, this composition is as frustratingly unclear and stagnant as the both the war and its opposition alike.

Frustrating &mdash 03/16/07 - 04:07:25 PM
Damn frustrating for sure. Kludgework in Kongress. Soldiers and kids dying daily and nobody seems to give a damn, they are too busy watching Fox news and American Idol.
Whoa you captured the feelings of hitting the wall with our government. Maybe next election will solve? How many dead in the meantime??

This music certainly portrayed this mess and gave no feelings of hope. Next tune could you throw a crumb of hope??

I'll be Marching on Saturday, God, it's better than sitting at home.

A mood of frustration well played. Consistently interesting mix, thanks for posting.

Now - LIOLI? &mdash 03/17/07 - 09:13:17 AM
that is indeed 'the far stretch' of the LIOLI loop. How you envisioned this is beyond me considering your starting material! :) I know, you warned....

So - way out there.

I give you props for the description alone &mdash 03/17/07 - 10:34:34 AM
well put. The music really works for me - great mix of tension, weight, pulse and message. I love how you slipped the loops into the mix subverted into textures. Really well done. This kind of tune is one of my favorite aspects of the LIOLI challenge.

Very Strange ----- &mdash 03/17/07 - 11:45:49 AM
I was swimming from speaker to speaker listening for the loop and then - I hear it. The very low slow moving bass line has it. Interesting song here. I just never emagined using the loop in such a way. Just goes the show the wide verity of musicianship here. Gotta love this place.

Nice work Cipher,

Form matches function &mdash 03/17/07 - 01:39:05 PM
I can almost see you physically stretching and twisting the loop in your frustration. The arrangement is totally appropriate to the subject matter, and the insistent, relentless march beat is also appropriately disturbing. Waffles sound good right about now.

Foot tapping &mdash 03/17/07 - 04:25:14 PM
The slowly building layers of ambiance against the clock, ticking away the last months of the disaster administration... as it slimes forward with the clicking, chirping morality of insects building the new world hive. Um, yeah, cool!!

Nightmarish &mdash 03/17/07 - 07:48:51 PM
Excellent. Like a nightmare you can't awake from, smothering all hope of escape. Like lava slowly flowing through the jungle, through our homes, across the desert, into the sea. It's been flowing for years, it glows red in the night, with an occasional flash as another building succombs.

Thanks all &mdash 03/18/07 - 08:19:35 AM
I'm glad people are getting the vibe.

I built this composition at a very slow tempo (40) so it's no wonder that the loops are not obvious. Believe it or not, I used all 4 loops - some more than once. I chopped and stretched and tweaked and reversed. I wanted this piece to sound mechanical and organic all at once. I wanted there to be a strong element of randomness and chaos beneath the pulse so screwing with the loops was the way to go.

I was inspired enough to do a video for this one as well. Check it out if you have 8 minutes to waste and and appreciate slow moving art films. Do not watch while high.

Nailed It. &mdash 03/18/07 - 08:10:10 AM
If someone told me last week that the Funk Guitar loops would be featured in a dark, hypnotizing vision of Bush et all, I'd almost laugh.

But only almost, for two unrelated reasons. Firstly, nothing about Bush, his administration and its knee-jerk supporters are funny anymore. And secondly, after two rounds of LIOLI, I've learned that the most unexpected, unlikely ideas can not only happen, but really fly.

So much about this war is difficult to put into words that don't sound like they've already been said - and ignored - a million times. Your piece captures that dull, inexplicable frustration too well. The hope? That in capturing that particular lightning in a bottle, you can use it to add power to your voice.

I'd like to watch American Idol with the sound off, and this piece playing instead.

Absolutely Hypnotic &mdash 03/30/07 - 11:43:00 AM
I really love how this captures the sheer trudge that war can be. Many songs about war tend to be overtly sad or overtly angry, but this song is about frustration and sheer running into walls over and over again. I think it does often feel as though nothing can be done, that one person has so little power in this situation. This is a very interesting take on things and I can really hear the influence of waffles, but only in the last third.
