Song Description

This tune is for the 3rd Loop It Or Lose It Challenge.

Notes about what I did:

This is actually two songs welded together into one. I didn't think it would be fair to submit two songs...

part one (120 BPM)
Funk_EGtr_Emaj_011 - transposed up to A
Funk_EGtr_Emaj_011 - processed through West Coast Wah
TUMi-Glitchbeat 2
TUMi-ElectroBeat5
TUMi-BigBeat 1 - fragments
Greek Sirtos Doumbek 20
Latin Danza Drumset 05 - first 15 beats of 16 in the loop
Latin Spice Percussion 01 - first 14 beats of 16 in the loop
Jamaican Sora Drumset 06 - first 13 beats of 16 in the loop
original synth bass guitar loop
original synth clav loop
original real electric guitar loops through Amp Sim and West Coast Wah

part two (40 BPM)
Funk_EGtr_Emaj_011 - as is, and transposed down one octave
Funky Pop Drums 03 - split into Left, Right, and Middle - bass drum in middle with no reverb
original vocals through Vocal Transformer female to male, down 3 more steps

Lyrics:
-- snip --
One of these days
the discovery channel will present a program about penguins
and the melting ice caps in Antarctica
and the background music will be playing Modern Rock Guitar # 11.

Way to go Bill - &mdash 03/16/07 - 11:32:31 PM
Seriously happening drum track here - kinda second line New Orleans in the beginning - then damn if you didn't get cool and icy with the penguin weirdness. These challenges are great for bring out the twisted impulses.

thanks for listening Bud

what's a second line New Orleans?

the penguins just happened - the coolest animals of them all perhaps?

what's really cool is what happens when you play the word "penguins" backwards

LIOLI needs more penguins! &mdash 03/17/07 - 02:02:52 AM
This is lots of fun. I totally recognized those dang TuMi loops, very nicely integrated into the mix. Now let's take it down a notch.....funky penguins, indeed.

those TUMi loops are way fun! i guess i'll burn out on them soon, but might as well enjoy it while i can!

i wish i could explain where those penguins came from - it was a random cosmic ray hitting a neuron i suspect. a D A F T idea...

Welded &mdash 03/17/07 - 11:09:08 AM
The funky part is terrific, and the end unexpected. Atmos is really great, the groove infectious. Very creative and strong entry to the challenge, Just thinking it would have been perharps better melted instead of welded.

glad you liked it - i really battled that funk loop. this is what happened...

re: welded - if it's cool enough it wouldn't melt! maybe i should have glued them together?

thanks

Robots &mdash 03/17/07 - 04:40:08 PM
I love the assembly line feel to the groove in this... it just marches forward like a robot parade. The layering of percussion is cool. ...And then, yup, it's a new song alright. When I heard "One of these days..." I immediately thought of the Pink Floyd song of that title. I like the big space of that second mix.

do you ever watch "How It Is Made" ? i love that show.

i've been getting into percussion layering - although i must admit here i did not use your idea of gating the tracks as you had suggested earlier (i didn't forget that tho)

that ref to PF was mostly intentional - glad someone noticed that! i was trying to set up the notion that a spacey space was coming up...

(penguins are the coolest of cool)

...REALLY well put together & imaginative use of the loops...the production is incredible...it reminds me of a surrealistic Yello...
...those poor penguins....;)

Very amusing!!! &mdash 04/30/07 - 03:03:19 PM
I love the tongue in cheek title! The music is reminiscent of a ride I once took in an original VW Bug on a beautiful sunny day. Your graphics in the picture are amazing (love the piece from a Chilton's manual)and Penguins and the way a VW moves - what a great correlation! I love this upbeat rhythm - makes me want to dance with abandon. :-)

I paid attention &mdash 05/04/07 - 12:33:05 PM
Mark was a lot like you - same career in Hi-Tech, same love of music and art,and inventions, same fixing of cars when he was young due to lack of funds. Sometimes he'd be brainstorming about several other lofty projects at once while fixing an important assembly on our car, and I'd be out there with him reading the Chilton's manual just to make sure he didn't forget to put the cotter pin back in that held the whole thing together! :-)
Strut is a musical and/or dance term, and a Macphearson Strut is (if I remember correctly) sort of like a shock absorber. :-)

i just noticed i posted the following comment on the wrong song, so here it is where it belongs:

by the way, that lady in the song pic is Elle Macpherson.
nobody seems to have picked up that little joke.

If I could make the picture bigger... &mdash 05/08/07 - 07:14:05 PM
I might have noticed, but I doubt it. I Haven't picked up a copy of Vogue in years, and I don't read S.I. (It's a gender thing I suppose :-) - now if she was wearing a name tag... :-) Anyway, I really like the song.
