Description:
I wrote this song both for LIOLI #3 and as a coming-home present for the man I'm going to marry. The gist of it is "I know I'm kind of a freak, so thank you for loving me anyway."
I took one of the loops, chopped it up mercilessly, and put it to work as a bass line in the bridge. Clearly it couldn't be less funky.
This is a demo. I wrote and recorded it in two days. Jim Bouchard was nice enough to do a wonderful new production for me, which can be found here.
Lyrics:
Olives and honey
Whoever thought to put them side by side?
That’s taste bud homicide
An hors d’oeuvre horror plain to see
Who could want to have this for their tea?
Olives and honey
It’s not a combo most would care to eat
Not a popular treat
Maligned and much misunderstood
Not the worst thing ever — but not good.
What stupid jerk
Thought this could work?
A mix so volatile
Every taste is wholly vile
But some folks, ya know
Don’t go with the flow
As they say, “de gustibus”
And that means hope for all of us…
Olives and honey
Not everyone’s idea of an idea
As in, “that’s an idea!”
Not everybody’s cup of tea
But that’s what you like
And that’s made all the difference to me
That just means the world to me.

"de gustibus" &mdash 03/17/07 - 03:31:45 AM
not in my dictionary, what's the meaning of this word ?
Beautiful hors d'oeuvre, promising demo Magritte...
Interpretation tres originale avec une voix parfaitement adaptee au style de cette chanson.
Marrant et bien agreable aux oreilles ce matin au reveil. Merci...

De gustibus &mdash 03/17/07 - 01:10:20 PM
There's a Latin phrase, "De gustibus non est disputandum" (I think I spelled that right?), which in English is rendered as "There's no accounting for taste." People often shorten it to "de gustibus," but I mispronounced it on purpose for sake of the rhyme.
Merci de tes mots très flatteurs; tu m'a fait rougir. :-)

I just realise that I might never have commented on one of your tunes earlier. Stupido me! This is such a charming and well crafted jazzy song. With lots of 'joie de vivre'. Veeeery good voice btw. Oh yes, I enjoyed it tremendously... and I'm going to check some other tunes of you right now.

your sense of humor, and this song! I have to say that I listened before reading the description, and I thought you had used a tuba sound for the bass during the bridge :P "Wah" effects on guitar aren't my cup of tea, so I'd give you bonus points if I could for defunkifying (is that a word??) the guitar loop. You have a wonderful singing voice as well! [ Reply to This ]
Great track Magritte &mdash 03/17/07 - 10:22:12 AM
About as subverted as any loop could be. Love the wordplay and singing. Did the loop inspire you in any way - or was it just a struggle to work it into the tune? [ Reply to This ]
What loop? &mdash 03/17/07 - 01:25:17 PM
Oh yeah, that loop. :-)
I had an idea for this song for a while, and decided that I was going to bend the loop to my will in order to shoehorn it in there. It was kind of killing two birds with one stone, to get this done for LIOLI and also before my fiancé got back in town.
Thanks to you and everyone for all your very kind words. I was extremely nervous to post this since I'm not yet comfortable recording my voice, so your encouragement is really appreciated. --- The Art of Procrastination[ Reply to This ]

Good on you!!! &mdash 03/17/07 - 04:23:57 PM
I love this track! I love the lightness of it, and the playfulness in it.
And I LOVE your voice in it!
Definitely keep your voice in this. There are some things you might do with production to make the vox track cleaner, if that's a concern.
But ...what a great voice :)
A ukelele would be a great, sunny addition to this.
Keep singing!
And thanks for sharing this! [ Reply to This ]
fun &mdash 03/17/07 - 04:57:15 PM
This one is fun. Sounds like it's right out of a broadway play production, Act 2 scene 4 of "......."? You got a great voice. Gonna listen to more of your music. [ Reply to This ]

Very engaging. the line taste bud homicide cracked me up. Very sweet song .... if it is appropriate to use that adjective in the context of olives and honey. You have a lovely singing voice, I will be sure to check out your other pieces. [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful & Fun &mdash 03/18/07 - 10:29:53 AM
Wow, you have a wonderful voice, and it works for this song too. Clever lyrics, a lot of fun with words (the flow, the phonics, the meanings) and a delicate, sweet melody. If it were from a play, it might be a kind of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sort of thing.
Thanks for this - I'm glad you shared it with us. [ Reply to This ]

I've always felt awkward responding to every person's comment, so please don't take it personally that I haven't. I'm blown away by your support for this song. I was so nervous, I had to have my fianc look at the comments for me Saturday morning and tell me whether it was okay for me to read them.
Based on some of your responses, I've changed the genre from Pop to Showtunes. That was actually my original thought, that it felt like something out of a musical, but I was convinced otherwise. Now maybe I'll write the rest of the musical. Look for it in 2012! :) [ Reply to This ]
delicious &mdash 03/20/07 - 01:47:26 PM
I loved the lyrics, great rhyming and meter. Very pretty singing too, finally we get to hear your sweet voice (well, that "P" guy of yours of course heard your voice first)! My only suggestion would be that since the repetitive piano chords start first and play through the whole song, they should be closer to center. Only YOU would sneak in some Latin lyrics, I love it... (De gustibus non est disputandum, %u201CThere%u2019s no accounting for taste.%u201D) And I shall offer you an "in absentia" pre-wedding toast... "Here's to our differences, they are what attract us and intrigue us every day... may we always see each others' uniqueness as a blessing".

You are a clever one here... you've made such a poignant point... I have to say the writing here is brilliant... you don't unfold the whole piece until the very end... and there is the"ah hah" moment... but, the light hearted, joyful presentation has you off ballance and comletely ready for the final thrust..
Also, this song has the feel of calssic tunes from eras/writers from the past...
I will tell my friends that i wrote it... :) [ Reply to This ]

What I hear .... &mdash 03/21/07 - 03:39:54 PM
magritte ... I learned a little trick which I haven't really played around with much .... but someone told me ... (and I say this after listening to your tune) ... it sounds a little like what happens on my tunes .... I hear the music AND I hear the vocal track .... but there is a slight thing missing between the two which BLENDS them together. For me ... I describe it as sounding like the vocal track is "perched" on top of the instrumental rather than being a part of it ... but the trick, as explained to me, was to double your vocal track ... and add some FX to one of the tracks (making the volume lower on this track) ... i.e. a hint of reverb .... and then leaving one track with less FX ... giving it the CLEAN sound you want ... the litle FX (at the lower volume) almost act as a "warming bridge" between the vocal track and the backing music .. thus helping to BLEND the two better .... (and on some occasions the vocal tracks have been tripled or more etc. until the desired sound is achieved) .... I was unable to experiment with this in the past due to my using a PC and it LAGGING and skipping every time I tried to add too many tracks .... but I shall experiment with this technique not that I have a MAC and GB. Hope this helps ... GREAT lovely vocals by the way .... I don't think you need much help in mixing as in the blending thing I mentioned.

Excellent advice. &mdash 03/21/07 - 05:45:46 PM
Alannah, this was exactly what I was looking for, how to keep the vocals from "floating" above the instrument bed. I've experimented with doubling (and tripling) vocal tracks but I haven't tried that trick you mention. I will definitely give it a go on the next version of this. Thank you so much for your help! --- The Art of Procrastination[ Reply to This ]

Magritte, you're quickly becoming one of my favorite female vocalists on this website. All I can say about this is simple and sweet . . . or, with olives and honey, sour and sweet. No, I'll go with simple and sweet. :) Very cute! [ Reply to This ]
