I don't think he does use GarageBand. But I know how to convert to MP3:

If you don't laready know how to export songs:

Go Menu Bar>Share>Send Song to iTunes.
(It will be in .aiff format

To conver that to MP3:

In iTunes, Go to preferences>Advaced>Import Using>Then select MP3

After that, Go to the song, select it, right click (or control click) on it and choose convert selection to MP3.
