Description:
Thomasa was gracious enough to allow me to sing all over his tune "Rain Blues" (http://www.macjams.com/song/24231). I wanted to try to do some more work on the vocal mixing .... but it just ended up sounding worse ... so I thought I would post what I had .. and see what advice comes my way.
Lyrics:
I crave the passion – but I need the love
I hunger for your touch – but alone it’s not enough
I need the love
The part of my soul – that is bruised
Is from a hurt I can’t explain
It’s left me with a scar
That may never heal again
I crave the passion – but I need the love
I wanna be held
And I wanna be kissed
I need to know that
If I’m gone I’ll be missed
Ooooh I crave the passion
But I need the love
I need the love
Oooooohhhh
The empty place that hurts
That makes me wanna die
The part makes me hate myself
Is hidden in a lie
A scar so deep
That nothing can compare
I only hope I have the strength
To try and to prepare
To clean my soul
To heal and repair
The damage done that caused such despair
I crave the passion
But I need the love
I hunger for your touch
But alone its not enough

I posted this song ... but it seems the description, the genre and the lyrics did NOT attach themselves ... hopefully I will have this resolved. [ Reply to This ]
lady sings the blues &mdash 03/18/07 - 04:54:23 AM
Your voice is perfect for this kind of low tempo blues. Dripping with reverb (hehe, your trademark:), the vocals shine on top of this smoky nightclub song. I have visions of you performing this track in a movie... Don't know why, but some early Bond-movie scenes are flashing through my head. Respect, mylady... as always.

... I think I am gonna have to check out this Shirley Bassey stuff ... maybe I will learn a new trick or two .... as always Walter I am grateful that you take the time to listen to my tunes and offer your insight into them.

Sweet! &mdash 03/18/07 - 06:07:56 AM
Great lyrics and vocals, Alannah - and what a sweet track! Thomasa really laid out a beauteous groove, smooth as hell, love the harmonica lead. My ears don't really detect any issues, Alannah - I think you did a great job recording and mixing your vocals - they are clear, blend in nicely with the music, but just above - and you've just enough reverb to provide classic space. You're getting better all the time at this production gig! And of course, you are one hell of a singer, and there's all kinds of smoke rising from your performance here. Smoldering on the verge of spontaneous combustion - no-one here does a slow-burn like you do. Great track! [ Reply to This ]
Slow-burn .... &mdash 03/18/07 - 01:07:12 PM
... I like the sounds of that ... it may be likely that this one belongs in my "Jessica Rabbit Series" .. heh heh ... I am truly blessed to have you listen and comment on my tunes as I know your own mixing abilities are superb and I trust you to tell me where I am going wrong (but yes ... that reverb .. haha).

This is a smooth delicious tune. Perfect for your voice Alannah. Again your voice reminds me of Shirley Bassey. Guess that's way Walter gets flashes of a James Bond movie.
You keep it on just the right level of energy. This is one of the best tunes I've heard from you my friend:)
The music from Thomasa is marvelous. Played with such sensitivity and professional touch. From the careful laid out drums to the silky smooth jazz guitar.
A great composition, and the arrangement and production is very well done!
You to make a perfect musical match.
This is one to keep:)
Thank you!

... thomasa's fabulous piece inspired me to float my voice all over it .... but thomasa is a superb musician and makes it easy to choose his music as the backdrop for my own musings. Thank you so much for your inspiring comments.

as always from you Alannah. Yes, a smokey Jazz bar... a double gin.
A few heads on the bar already...it's only 9 o'clock.
Superb instrumental by Thomasa and good use of vocal reverb.
Barman......make that a treble!

Delicious blues. &mdash 03/19/07 - 08:01:56 PM
Your voice complements the song perfectly -- I totally agree with the Shirley Bassey comparison. I actually wish there weren't so much production on the vocals; I want them to be more front and center, as though I were sitting in the front row at this performance in a small jazz club, rather in the back of a stadium. You've got nothing to hide, girl!! [ Reply to This ]
Yes .... &mdash 03/21/07 - 02:10:59 PM
... I continue to hide behind my "reverb" ... but I just don't know how to mix the vocals without sounding Perched on top of an MP3 ... which is usually what happens ... still learning. Originally thomasa said he wanted me to re-sing it "a lot closer" to the microphone ... but when I tried that .. it just PEAKED like mad .. and me not knowing enough about input levels and gain knobs ... just left it as it was and attempted to make it sound as good as I could with my limited knowledge on such things ....

We're all (rabbit) ears... &mdash 03/19/07 - 09:27:06 PM
Alannah... I was imagining a shimmering image of a lounge singer ala Jessica Rabbit as I listen to your silken, whiskey-tinged voice. Passionate and heartfelt. This song was made for your voice...or your voice was made for this song... Either way, it fits like a glove. Perfect.
By the way, your vocal mix is just fine. Would be hard to tell you struggled with this judging from the polished finished product. Just the right amount of reverb, I think. [ Reply to This ]
and yeah... &mdash 03/19/07 - 09:32:16 PM
Thomasa provided an awesome musical background... his smoldering blues sound is the perfect fertile ground for your lyrics and voice to be seeded and grow into full fruition...

Thanks Leon ... &mdash 03/21/07 - 02:13:35 PM
... I think I am enjoying the "Jessica Rabbit" nickname .... I still do believe tho that most of my mixing issues are resulting from the fact that I am singing on top of MP3s ... and am not able to adjust much other than my own voice which makes it harder to BLEND in .... but I'm glad you didn't find it too "reverby" ... I am getting better at lowering that - but as yet, cannot seem to eliminate it entirely.

Nice laid-back jazzy torch music, great job Thomasa! And I agree, a perfect cradling bed to cultivate Alannah's deliciously longing lyrics and wonderful singing here... Alannah, you're mix-in skills are definitely improving, this sounds great! I don't hear the muddiness you refer to. And you used incredible restraint in your use of reverb... seems perfect here! I gotta fave this one.

Great backing by Thomasa, and a typically great sizzling vocal from you Alannah. Is it just me (no-one else seems to have mentioned it), or is there some unneccessary buzz/household hum before your vocal starts? As you're asking for comments on production, that would definitely be something I'd be trying to cut out in a remix. Very cool!

yes that buzzzz .... &mdash 03/25/07 - 03:23:00 PM
... that "buzz/hum" is something that I have battled with since the beginning .... I believe it is the sound of my tower (unfortunately dummy me puts the microphone right next to it ... hahaha) .... I usually delete the beginning of any recording before I start to sing to try to eliminate that hummmm in the beginning - it's likely I forgot to do it this time) .... thanks for takin the time to listen and comment - always a joy for me to hear from you Jiguma.

I don't think you should add anything more to this track. It's not a track that's meant to be "busy". Thomasa has already set the standard and you have followed it beautifullly with your single vocal. Leave it as it is!
