Description:
OK why this song... It’s not what would be considered my usual genre... Well, I found MJ just a year ago today... and I wanted to post something, but I have had no time to work on any current personal projects... but I did record this about 6 months ago... My wife and friends ask... “why do you need so many guitars”... the answer is “They each have a voice all their own” for recording this is useful... But I’ve never recorded with this guitar... what it does naturally is not in my bag of tricks... so i set out to make some smooth jazz type stuff... truth is I’ve always loved chasing down a melody using chord voicings... as for this vintage Gibson hollow body... One reason I hardly ever play it is, I think it’s worth something... it is in excellent condition, I store it with strings that are too light gauged, because I’m being over protective... but it doesn’t produce all the sound it should without the meatier strings.. Oh and one more thing... the guy that I got it from says that it belonged to Lou Reed... How you would verify that, I have no idea... He said that Lou Reed gave it to his nephew, and it sat in the closet...

ALL SKATE!

Beautiful Chord Work &mdash 03/18/07 - 04:21:51 PM
If you ask me. I find it hard to play some of the chord melodies I've tried so I can appreciate this. It's always fun to try something new too.

it's definatley fun to try new stuff...and I needed to justify having the es225... thanx for the encouragement... i was really on the fence about this one

Happy Anniversary! &mdash 03/18/07 - 04:23:20 PM
Well, it's definitely not your usual fare, as you say, but it's nice to hear you stretching out beyond what we're used to hearing from you! It's so mellow for the first part that that it seemed like very enjoyable but laid-back skating arena music (is this what "ALL SKATE! refers to?), but then you got an excellent guitar solo happening, which was great!

Hope to hear lots more songs from you now that spring is on its way (or here, depending on where you are).

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! You're one of the few MacJammers I'ver ever heard of who made a huge impact right away, and you've been a really positive force here ever since.

ALL SKATE!! &mdash 03/18/07 - 04:40:40 PM
I had the same impression as I listened... I was hoping that it wouldn't come off as too cheesy... and I do have several songs just waiting for me to get some free time, the few free days I've had in the last months, I just collapsed...

And thank you Clark, that was a nice thing to hear

good tune &mdash 03/18/07 - 05:28:48 PM
I knew this was a good one before I pressed play:) And indeed I was right. A tasty melody with ditto guitar playing. Great jazzy tune. You reveal your talent not only as a great guitarist, like we've heard on your other tunes, but you certainly handle the soloing department very well:)

The keys you've put on has as a good counter melody/hook line and balances the tune well.

Lou Reed's guitar... way cool:)

Thanx Thor &mdash 03/18/07 - 05:42:57 PM
The solo was harder than usual... It is such a laid back song that I couldn't go for the throat... When I did anything fast it didn't seem to fit... after trying this I have way more respect for jazz guitarists... you really have to try and pay attention to melody and the tendency is to fall back into the modes that you're familiar with...

As for Lou Reed's guitar... who know's... that's just the story that came with it

All skate, everybody skate, skate slowly, please ... &mdash 03/18/07 - 05:56:38 PM
Yup, except we had just a skating rink organ at the place I went in Jr high! (And the owners were German refugees who'd owned the place for decades! - funny the stuff we store in our brains) ANYWAY - no, not too cheesy for me, but I'm feeling fairly mellow right now, so this fits the mood. It's interesting to hear all of the kinds of music you play and sing. I enjoy all of it. Happy MacJams anniversary!

Hi Kristine &mdash 03/19/07 - 06:54:08 AM
They must have all gone to a school for this... I can still hear it all these decades later... "All Skate! Skate slowly and carefully please" When I finished the song, It just poped into my head... and my 1st thought was "OOH no!" Truth is that if I had some time right now, I would finish up some things that would get my juices going if I had any juice... but I'm out of gas... I kind of see life as seasons, and I know I'll get through this... I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel... (The headlights of a fast approaching train)

thanx for that, I really appreciate you

Chugga Chugga &mdash 03/19/07 - 07:03:03 AM
I like that... I'm not sure about breakin it in though... I've been known to drop guitars while I'm in the studio... you know running wires, getting mikes possitioned, changing configurations, I have a bad habit of holding my guitar through the whole process... bad idea.... so this time I was real careful... I know that's not what you meant, but i think this guitar could give a bit more..

I would like to put some 11's on this guitar and redo a couple of the trax...

thanx for that... Chugga Chugga

Breaking out... &mdash 03/18/07 - 08:49:29 PM
.... in all sorts of ways.

Your guitar definitey matches your song in its beauty. Great sound.

Most diggable number, Scott.

Wish I could take your guitar with me to a 4-hour guitar clinic this coming weekend, headed by Chuck Loeb with special guest, Pat Martino... GULP!

Top marks from me... and a keeper.

Scorp:)

P.S. It's Deja vu! (Inside joke for me). Wanna have a laugh, Scott? Check out my initial comments here--> http://www.macjams.com/song/30125

You know a man should never try to multi-task... get one job right and move on... it drives my wife crazy...

Hey Readings not too far from NJ... if you swing by, I'd send this guitar with you... but I'll tell you right now, this guitar is a one trick pony.. It has one voice period... After this recording, I see it as more of an investment, and I'm already starting to think about the guitars I could get if I sold this one... I really need a telly

thanx Erwin...

...at the King of Prussia Mall... or the Ben Franklin Bridge... or the Camden Aquarium, hehehe!

I'm days away from purchasing a hollow-body.

Cherry red finish.

Yep, I'm ready for a new ask - that's ebonics for "axe" :)

Hey, Scott... &mdash 03/19/07 - 08:33:45 PM
...this has some lovely tone to it....

Despite its Lou Reed heritage, there's some bits of Duane and Dicky toward the end there....

A very neat tune... just listening to it gives a good feeling...

Hi Ed &mdash 03/20/07 - 02:44:54 PM
thanx much pal... I could almost pull it off with the chords and feel... but I think the fact that Duane & Dickie are peekin' through, shows I'm a jazz man wana-be... But I agree, I can hear them in there...

So, let's see now: &mdash 03/20/07 - 03:14:51 PM
"mint condition"
"worth something"
"stored with light strings"
"belonged to Lou Reed"
Uhhhh...how much are you asking for it? ;-)
I like this tune alot. The Gibson sounds great. As does the background rhthym track. What kind of guit is that? Strat?
Nice tone to the lead in the end jam session.
Listening on a practice break. Relaxed, well played groove. Incentive to get back to my instrument. Thanks, Scott.

Hi Bob &mdash 03/20/07 - 03:22:48 PM
The rythem track is the es225... the little chicken picker in the left speaker is a strat though... I'm not sure why I put it in ... but it moved the song along... This really is a pretty guitar, but it's not versatile... and it does what it wants...

thanx much

[ Reply to This ]
That's the Strat I was talking about... &mdash 03/20/07 - 05:17:33 PM
...and yes; it's a subtle touch that moves the tune along very nicely. Very effective. I like it a lot.

Breezy &mdash 03/27/07 - 09:34:20 AM
This is a nice track, Scott - I totally wasn't expecting something so mellow and breezy, but it's beautiful. Reminds me a little of Stevie Wonder - heck, you do this sort of thing well - how about a whole album of shiny, happy music? Sweet tone on that guitar solo midway through - angelic and just a little dirty!

Hello B F &mdash 03/29/07 - 05:49:00 PM

Very smooth (with that organ, how could it not be?) and I like your chord progression in this. Oh, and that guitar solo is quite tasty!

This is clearly different from your usual uploads, but it's always nice to hear people trying out new things and experimenting in other genres. And it seems like you pulled it off perfectly!

Very nicely done!

I'm certainly no jazz expert, but it sounded damn sweet to me! You are obviously one fine guitar player. Nice progression, chordal melody, subtle but cool chuggin' line way in the back on the left channel, tasty sweet solo- if this what you do with a style you don't normally even play, I'm wildly impressed, and I'll have to check out some more of your stuff!

Hi Scott! &mdash 04/21/07 - 01:39:06 AM
Whilst I have to admit I'm not into this type of music in a big way, (that is probably due to the fact that I have not heard enough of this type of jazz style etc) this is just fantastic, I love the organ and guitars and the whole thing!
Best Regards

Hi Steve &mdash 04/23/07 - 01:48:09 PM
this is different for me too... I wanted to do something that would be authentic for this kind of guitar, since I'd never recorded with it... A real jazz player could probably point me out as an imposter right away.. but it was still fun to do, that's all that counted in the end

thanx again

...that's what comes to mind when I hear this great little lounge song. What's that: a Leslie organ? Whirrr, whirrr, whirrr... harkens back to a calmer time. This is just so darn lazy and laid back. Excellent guitar work throughout. You have such skill and you've also done the acoustic recording beautifully...The fade was the perfect ending...maybe make it twice as long. Let the sound linger just a bit more. ... Great tune, beautifully played.
