Description:
This is the first new song I've written in a while and my first post in a couple of months. It's the result of a sleepless night, like so many of my songs.
Nothing too deep or meaningful, just your average, everyday 80s-inspired pop song.
Enjoy!
Lyrics:
You Can’t Have Me
(Unless you want me)
©2007 Joseph Gurner
I should just walk away
cause I know where this is going
You beg me to stay
but I’m walking through the door
like I should have done before
I should have known better
but now I have to let you know
You can’t have me.
you can’t have me.
you can’t have me....
...unless you want me
You show me your
bedroom eyes and I’m drawn back in again
You tell me your
little lies and then you laugh as I
try to get you off my mind
I should have known better
but now I have to let you know
You can’t have me.
you can’t have me.
you can’t have me....
...unless you want me
Oooooooh
Oooooooh
Oooooooh
Oooooooh
Can’t you see
I don’t want to play your games again
You can’t have me.
you can’t have me.
you can’t have me....
...unless you want me
You can’t have me.
you can’t have me.
you can’t have me....
...unless you want me
You can’t have me.
you can’t have me.
you can’t have me....
...unless you want me

Very nice .. &mdash 03/20/07 - 07:31:00 AM
catchy number here Joseph, I was trying to imagine an 80s band that this could have been performed by and ..
I thought "The Bangles". Slick 80s pop, good lyrics, singing and playing - particularly like the guitar in this. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Alan! &mdash 03/20/07 - 12:21:30 PM
Coming up with a catchy hook is tough and I'm kind of proud of the hook for this one. Very nice and poppy.
I've been playing around a while to try and get a good "80s" guitar sound and this is as close as I've gotten so far. I've just been basically stumbling around until I found something I liked.
Thanks for the listen and the comments. I appreciate it.

Heh Heh! &mdash 03/20/07 - 10:27:10 AM
You know I'm a sucker for the 80's and I think this could have been a reasonably-sized hit in our heyday. I agree with apb that this would sound good by The Bangles or The Go-Go's, even. A raging English accent would sound great too, but I won't push you too hard.
If you wanted to go back and work on this some more, some harmonies would be cool or a backing vox doing a echoing kind of "you can't have me" in the chorus.
Pretty amazing for how quickly you put this together.
Gee, whatever could this be about? ;-) [ Reply to This ]
I'd go with... &mdash 03/20/07 - 12:37:58 PM
...the Bangles rather than the Gol-Gos. I think I look a little more live Susanna Hoffs than Jane Wiedlin. And for now, y'all just have to settle for my Southern accent. :)
Of course, if SOMEBODY were interested in providing some nice female vocals on this one, I'd be amenable...
BTW, did I ever tell you about the time I got caught sneaking back stage at a Bangles concert?

Kill me now..but it really has an 80's thing.. Modern English, But durning the 80's I was into Pete Townshend and the Talking Heads.
This song is very very catchy!! Great mix. Great Writing, And great musicianship!!! [ Reply to This ]
A little Duran Duran never hurt anyone.... &mdash 03/20/07 - 08:18:05 PM
I listened to a little bit of everything in the 80s, well, pretty much always have, but the "New Wave" sound really suck with me. I can't seem to escape it and, I guess as long as I'm posting here at MJ, neither will anyone else. :D
Thanks for taking a listen, Steve. I appreciate it.

Those pics are getting wierder and wierder Joseph! &mdash 03/20/07 - 08:21:31 PM
Good one Joseph! I like how you've got your vocal right up the front. I suspect you'll have trouble getting a mere mortal to sing a top harmony on this - man you sing high. This is one of the songs I sometimes come across here at MJ that I think is very coverable (hopefully by someone who will make you a million in royalties). Good performance, but a particularly good song - nice hooks, melody, lyrics and structure.

So... &mdash 03/22/07 - 10:02:51 AM
...when you say I sing high, are you talking about my vocal range or my state of mind. :)
Of course, I'm always up for someone coving my tune, especially if they're going to make me rich, but I think I'll take the money up front when that happens.
Thanks for taking a listen Neil, I appreciate it always.

The 80s Rule!!!! &mdash 03/22/07 - 10:08:37 AM
I guess that box of baking soda I keep in there with all those 80s sounds helps keep them nice and fresh. That and the moth balls.
Thanks for stoping by, Vic and taking a listen. It's much appreciated.

Nice to see you're back! &mdash 03/22/07 - 11:58:46 AM
So, welcome back! Again you feed us with 80's nostalgia and does it very well. Nice song, melody, arrangement and performance. I love the shaker and the sound on the guitar is awesome, gentle and perfect. The bass is also very good, it hold up the song very well. Again, very nice to see you're back!!! Mikki [ Reply to This ]
Coolll &mdash 03/22/07 - 09:01:49 PM
Yeah, there was a blur of MTV there in the 80's... I think I remember this from that/then. I really dig the melodies and that catchy chorus. That hi-hat is blazing in the beginning... reminds me of the drummer for Men At Work. I'm liking this more the more times I listen. Great work, Joseph. [ Reply to This ]
Great 80's production &mdash 03/24/07 - 02:54:53 PM
Where'd we all be without Roland Chorus? Nice tune and performance too. I like how the lead line sounds kinda like harmonica. Is it keys or guitar? So hard to tell what's doing what these days. [ Reply to This ]
