Description:
Another groovalicious sound bed by Hectorious. This one goes back to last fall, I think, but I was always hoping I could get another Mj to add a lead to the end.
Norman Goodman has graciously extended himself and added, imho, a really cool melodic solo.
For my part: synth solo in the front end, and some piano chords on the backside.
Hectorious : Composition, Groove, Bass, Drums, Synths, Everything Else!

Cheers Mates! &mdash 03/20/07 - 08:49:31 PM
It was an honour and a privilege to have a chance to play on the same song with such talented artists. I am very grateful that I was included and my gane had to be stepped up because I think it is an excellent piece of music. What grabbed me about this song was the groove, superb musicianship of John & Hector. The instrumentation of both players to my ears brought that extra special intangible to what was undoubtedly a finely crafted composition. Thanks for listening,

MJ at it's best &mdash 03/21/07 - 04:22:13 PM
Real nice colab guys... only at MJ... 1st off I'll listen to anything John posts... it sounds like Hectorious layed an excellent foundation for the whole piece... and the Guitar solo really worked so well.. it propelled the piece toward the ambient genre instead of away... [ Reply to This ]
comin together &mdash 03/21/07 - 09:50:33 PM
Scott, so hard to pop it in one genre, and I think thats what I like about it. Rockish ambient? Always loved Hector's bed and Norman's playing took the vibe to a new level. thx for the comments! [ Reply to This ]

nice groove &mdash 03/22/07 - 08:30:14 AM
You folks work together rather nicely.
The synth/keyboards had me thinking I was listening to a Joe Sample cut for a moment, it had laid back presence with those sustained chords and occasional rhythmic comps , while the bass and drums kept us propelled forward. Norman's guitar, with it's slow build and then his layered response to himself was really cool in this.
This group is ready for the road. [ Reply to This ]
sample &mdash 03/22/07 - 12:55:43 PM
Damien, Joe Sample has gotta be one of my all time fav's. Hardly ever hear him play synth stuff, but his technique on the ivories is to die for. If i could have the talent in his toejam I'd be happy. :-) Thx for checkin us out. [ Reply to This ]
Did you ever see him in the Benson video? &mdash 03/29/07 - 09:37:54 AM
Karmo, Ever see Sample in the George Benson video "Absolutely Live" filmed in Ireland??? Great video. Benson does the smooth and the Jazz stuff. Sample is great, man the whole rhythm section really has it going on. Also check out the other guitar player too.

Cool Fusion &mdash 03/22/07 - 06:59:40 PM
Very enjoyable.
I enjoyed the fluid synth solo leading into the industrial strength change of beat and fluid - but more cutting, due to its aggressive tone and phrasing - guitar playing.
I wish it had continued, I felt cheated having the music fade like that. :) [ Reply to This ]
agreed &mdash 03/23/07 - 08:46:05 AM
I have to second that re:cheated, and thats my bad. When I listen it seems to me the song fades just when Norman is getting wound up. I should extend the bed, or better yet, we should come up up with a real ending! [ Reply to This ]
niiiiiiiiice &mdash 03/22/07 - 07:55:10 PM
i'm a sucker for this kinda groove and you guys built on it and played in it nicely. tasty piano chords - great sweeps thru space with norman bending the guitar strings and rules - nice piano backing there. if i had my druthers, i'd up the volume on the bass & drums.
this is beautiful, and puts me in a good mood. makes me wanna swirl on a hard wood floor with my sox on. ;)
nice, fellas! anne [ Reply to This ]
da bass &mdash 03/23/07 - 09:00:56 AM
Anne, correct you are. I'm gonna have to chase Hector for a remix of the bed, with an emphasis of pushing up his tasty bass playing. Its one of the coolest things hap'n for me in the tune. Thx for checkin it out [ Reply to This ]
the power of three &mdash 03/22/07 - 09:32:31 PM
everything stands on its own. the bass groove really holds a solid bottom. excellent keys, something i wish i had some skill on. normans guitars, well, i've been a fan of his lead work.
excellent job by all. [ Reply to This ]
SGU &mdash 03/23/07 - 09:14:15 AM
Vic, Hector calls the collaboration of the Mj community the SGU (sonic groove unity) :-) It is indeed a place of great energy. Its certainly raised the bar for me. Thx for stoppin by [ Reply to This ]

Some of my favorite MacJams moments... &mdash 03/24/07 - 11:17:49 AM
...occur when I listen to something that is SO not what I listen to, and I end up listening to it over and over...
As here.
Other commenters are right on it about the propulsive and infectious power of the groove... picks you up and deposits you right in a rocking and toe-tapping good mood... To my jaded ancient ears the guitar work is really well suited to the tune... and I'll vote with those who are saying, "More!"... I'm getting to count on Hectorious for bass lines where his tremendous chops are subordinated to taste, feel and groove... and John, you seem to me to be one of the masters of keyboard groove and atmosphere 'round here... Great atmosphere that's always full, always interesting, never thick and overpacked or gluey...
Gratefully into the iPod she goes... I bet I'll find myself walking to work in rhythm to this thing one morning...

Seriously Ed, you always leave the greatest comments. I wish I had that gift for words. Must come with the Singer/Songwriter/Lyricist gene! Appreciate you checkin it out. I second the comment re: Hectors bass lines. Incredible innate ability to groove. [ Reply to This ]
Great collab! &mdash 03/25/07 - 03:38:57 AM
Tight yet loose (if you know what I mean). I'd love to hear a bit more of Hector's bass in the mix though. Solos and general playing are superb.

Tight and loose &mdash 03/25/07 - 01:06:42 PM
Neil, thx for stoppin by. I think there's definitely a fluid vibe, esp with respect to the rythym section (Hector has that down :-). Ditto on the bass. [ Reply to This ]
Long time coming &mdash 03/25/07 - 12:54:33 PM
Feels like a long time since we had a new KTB track, but this is worth the wait. The drum sounds are great - really crisp and crunchy (could eat 'em for breakfast), and the track is just groovy and soothing.
Nice structure with some unexpected changes (I like the drop-down, clap-along bit).
Great work guys, and nice to have you back KTB.

..on reflection - after listening back several times on headphones, the guitar seems quite in tune, and is in actual fact mixed rather cleverly with alternate parts panning from left to right,so ignore my last comment.GREAT track! [ Reply to This ]

nice fusion piece &mdash 03/28/07 - 07:18:52 PM
it's got a great rock/jazz feel to it. (maybe this is fusion?)
i like the keys - nice and smooth moody. the occasional expressive bending works well. that long tape echo on it is most excellent.
1/2 way it changes pace (well, you know, not the BPM per se, but it picks up) -- that works very well to switch it up and set up the piano and the guitar lead!
nice fade out, though i might have repeated one more time and faded out even more slowly to let us down easy.
thanks! [ Reply to This ]

echoed by a few here in this thread. I appreciate you visiting smokey and giving it a listen. I stayed with the genre that Hector originally threw it up under, but i suppose it could wander over into others as well. Hope we meet again! [ Reply to This ]
