really incredible... &mdash 03/22/07 - 02:09:18 PM
these touches really bring the song home... I knew these lyrics were worth mulling over and digesting... excellent writing and delivery... very pro... you've really captured the subject and so eloquently layed your heart out for the listener... I don't see how this could be much better [ Reply to This ]

Delicate loss, almost without nostalgia &mdash 03/22/07 - 02:52:01 PM
Wonderfully delicate presentation of a quality song. Your vocals are fantastic, strength in simplicity (which gives your voice a cleansing innocence), and your guitar playing competent and create a wonderful setting. The synth is thin and kind of cheap sounding, like a demo sound that you expect to replace with something else later. The wandering backing vocals, set on a timed pan, is a tad gimmicky, not really in the spirit of the simplicity of the track. Consider redoing the track, keep your backing vocals in one place, and using either an electric piano or some other synth sound that has more stereo depth and can add to the atmosphere instead of lay flat in the back. Beautiful song expertly recorded, honestly and soulfully sung. [ Reply to This ]
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL ..... &mdash 03/22/07 - 03:22:36 PM
... you have got what I refer to as "one of the cleanest" vocals out there .... every lyric perfectly clear and uncluttered .... one of these days you gotta tell me what settings you use on your vocals ... to get such a crisp sound ... that being said ... beautiful beautiful voice. Thanks! &mdash 03/23/07 - 12:59:21 AM
Thanks for the great comments! As for my vocals, I use a good microphone (audiotechnica, but I don't know what the model is sorry!), it's one of the floating kind, a compressor mic with phantom power. I love it. And, I run it through a Boss recorder first, with the vocal effects set to Compresser 2, then through an interface, and into my Mac computer. On GarageBand, I use the Live Performance vocal setting. And that's it!
Hope this helps! I'm going to listen to your stuff now.
Thanks again,

Lovely Redux &mdash 03/22/07 - 08:04:00 PM
Nicely done, Stacey.
Yes, the strings would benefit from an upgrade, but any producer worth his salt would take care of that.
It's your voice and emotion that *make* this tune. The rest is just window dressing. [ Reply to This ]
Gorgeous &mdash 03/23/07 - 09:05:41 PM
Beautiful voice, lushious harmony, sweet guitar, super production. interesting writing. What more could one desire? Thanks for posting. [ Reply to This ]
That's it! &mdash 03/24/07 - 11:41:28 AM
Stacey, it all starts with the song, and your instincts as a songwriter are really strong... This song is perfect... Terrific lyrics and melody...
After the song, I think the thing that puts a song across is the vocal, and here again, you've sung the song perfectly... I still hear Testimony-era Ferron in there, and that, to me, is still a compliment... The total delivery is right up there with 'Ain't Life A Brook', which is about as good a sung as was ever sung...
The guitar is dramatically improved, and the recording all around sounds clear and warm...
I usually listen over headphones, as so many people do these days, and I might be inclined to agree with Tobin's comments regarding panning and the synth if I was listening that way, but I'm listening over my monitors today, and this sounds very strong over speakers...
Really, Stacey, you can take this song as far as you want to go. This is a deep, human, fully artistic song that is also a completely professional songwriting effort. One of the best songs I've heard on MacJams...

Stacy:
This is right up there with some of the best female vocal music out there these days. The mixing in the vocals is even better than usual. Be sure to memorize those settings.
Way to go girl!

Wow! &mdash 03/25/07 - 03:14:06 AM
This is really exceptional Stacey (as people have already said). It seemed to be very soft at the start, and then I realised that I was using "soft" rather than "delicate" - it's a lovely, delicate piece indeed. To me there is very little in this that I would change - I'm listening on 'phones, and the movement in the harmony track is maybe just a little too pronounced rather than just not a good idea - maybe if you limited the "wandering" a little more. The synth string sound certainly doesn't sit with the class of the rest of the track (performance, production etc) - if you were looking at taking this further, maybe some refinement of that sound would be worthwhile. Having said my bit about the (extremely minor) nits, I also have to agree with Ed (again!) that this is among the better MJ tunes I've heard - certainly this year. Well done!

I missed you &mdash 03/25/07 - 10:38:25 AM
I've missed out on you Stacey. My loss. But better late than sorry:) You've been fan'ed!
This tune is peaceful and a pure beauty and it works very well as you've arranged it. I'm with Tobin on the string/synth though...
I like to try out different styles on my own tunes to see how they work with simple arrangements like this, and then I'll crank up the electric guitar and bass and drums and the works to see how it turns out with a fuller arrangement:) Could be interesting to hear this one with a more band like arrangement... Beautifully sung! &mdash 03/25/07 - 10:30:48 PM
The lyrics are really well done - for me, they strike a balance between obvious & obscure that's perfect. I agree that the vocals are just THERE! beautifully balanced and clean, precisely tuned and just enough fuzz in the focus to give it a wistful quality. The guitar is very nice, too. The string synth sound is - well - a synth sound, but is so far back in the mix, that I just kind of ignore it, because I'm busy listening to your voice. I'm sure a producer would have something to say, but for me, it doesn't detract from the obvious quality of your vocal delivery. [ Reply to This ]
stunning! &mdash 03/26/07 - 01:40:40 PM
such a crisp, clear, clean song. very soulfully sung.
so much emotion put into it! i found it by browsing the "ratings picks", am i ever glad i did! such a unique vocal style, you sound like you, not someone else! thanks for posting it so i can hear it! [ Reply to This ]

Bravo &mdash 03/26/07 - 09:47:56 PM
Sounds great to me. Not much I would change. I agree with Neil the only Minor (and I do mean minor that I would consider is a synth string part that sounds to pronounced. Other than that Bravo.

Great singing &mdash 03/27/07 - 08:33:32 AM
Great singing and background vocals. But, I'm sure you're more concerned about the song which is well crafted and pro-quality. I think you're outstanding writer. I'd like to check out more of your stuff.

I liked the first version &mdash 03/27/07 - 12:20:14 PM
and I like that you can take advice too! This is great! The string part needs some work, and that's probably next on the list, but this version is a big improvement to an already great song. I like the simplicity of this though, and I wouldn't want to hear too big an arrangement for such an intimate emotion. Small touches is all it needs. Restraint is sometimes quite effective, and for that reason I don't think it needs a bridge, really. imho. Really nice! [ Reply to This ]
Lovely &mdash 03/27/07 - 07:15:19 PM
and deservedly topping the charts. That lady has a gorgeous voice. If I had one caveat it's the rather uninspired keyboards. It's good that you don't overwhelm the vocals but it's a little anaemic...... [ Reply to This ]

I have great respect for you... you're so very artistic... last night I almost called you to my new post "Sleep" and decided to let it ride... but I did come back here to drink this in again... i just wanted to tell you I place a high premium on the writing... and your whole song is killer... but that 1st verse is textbook... it's school for those of us who would learn [ Reply to This ]

Seeing you online just now, made me remember that I've been trying to figure out what to say to you about this song that I've probably listened to thirty times since you posted it.
I really think you've set the bar now for this type of music, writing and performance, especially.
It's a pretty overwhelming song, emotionally and incredibly touching. Thank you SO much for opening yourself up like this. It's wondeful. [ Reply to This ]

this version is sounding really good. add of a second vocal track sounds great. the lyrics are amazing i love the imagery it brings. "left my face inside your mirror, left my heart in a cup of tear" that's just simply brilliant artistically. right when i was gonna comment something coming in like chords to build power it happened so yay. i could hear a piano on this. i rather like this song.
