Description:
My first collaborative effort and I had Neil as my mentor and collaborator. I feel privledged to have had a collaborative experience here at MJ after being a member for such little time. Neil has been generous as well as patient with my level of experience. Thank you Neil.
I re-did the vocal track with a home-made pop-filter (my wife's nylons...thank you Scott) but my cat startled me on the first line....forgive me.
Lyrics:
When I Was Young
Words and Music by Joe Brady 2001
There was a time when I could
Look foreward to living
There was a time when I could
See the glass half-full
A time when a batty-eyed glance
Could set my heart racing
And wake me in the middle of the night
When I was young
I remember the first time
She put her hand in mine
That first hug I got
That wasn’t from my mom
When I could see myself
And I liked what I was seeing
Cause man I guess I couldn’t do no wrong
When I was young
Over and over her voice
Whispered in my ear
My heart was her’s
I loved her more than I could bear
When I was young
There was a time when
I confessed my love
Poured empty out my heart
And I swore my soul to her
I told her she’d changed my life
And she told me I was crazy
While laughing at me she opened up her arms
When I was young
There was I time I cried and I
Thought my life was over
Head on Mom’s shoulder my chest
Heaving with my sobs
And I couldn’t tell her why
Why couldn’t it just be right
What was it about me she couldn’t love
When I was young

Nice one Joe! &mdash 03/23/07 - 08:33:32 AM
When I first heard this song of yours, it seemed to have so much potential. I think this version (and it's not just the drums and bass) moves a lot more and better represents this very pretty tune.
Really nicely done Joe - I really enjoyed working on this with you.
Peace,
Neil [ Reply to This ]
Thank you Neil &mdash 03/23/07 - 09:00:55 PM
I thought your drums and bass made the song move. It was a real nice feeling to be singing with a strong bass line. I also learned a lot about the process from you and now know how much I don't know. But through listening to all the great recordings at MJ, I now know what is possible and I hope to learn how to achieve a great sound. Thanks for all your time and effort dragging me kicking and screaming through the collaboration process. I can't wait to try it again. You're the best, Cheers! [ Reply to This ]
Whoops ! Still learning. &mdash 03/23/07 - 09:10:27 PM
Good to see you RC, Speaking of collabs! You have acheived even more respect through my first foray into collab. So many things are possible; I hope to get up to speed soon. I really liked your "Suicide from the Basement Window" Dixie Mason collab. Thanks for the listen, brotha! [ Reply to This ]

Working with Neil was like coming off the bench for a great coach. He's inspired me to try all kinds of approaches; some work, some don't and he gave me the short route on the learning curve for a few things for which I am grateful. Also, he plays great bass ;-) [ Reply to This ]

I was a little worried that through my inexperience that I would make Neil sound bad, but as it turns out, that's pretty much impossible. He really did give me good advice. Thanks for stopping in and listening. Much obliged! [ Reply to This ]

glad you've gotten a chance to have the unique fun hat MJ has to offer, We all get to benefit too. This is a great song - well played and sung. The lyrics speak the truth and your voice puts it across direct from the heart. Nice job Joe and Neil. [ Reply to This ]

Very Nice --- &mdash 03/24/07 - 09:57:25 PM
I enjoyed this song very much. I like everything about it and the vocal track - well, lets say the nylon worked. I especially like the dry vocal sound and it seemed to come in a stereo way. Interesting mix done very well. Very nice collaboration Joe and Neil.
Thanks for sharing and welcome to Macjams Joe.

Thanks Mike, &mdash 03/24/07 - 10:40:30 PM
The vocal was kind of an experiment using two different microphones at the same time and recording in stereo. The idea came to me after Neil said something about the way a drum track is recorded and how one should handle the track's panning. You've got pretty good ears. The "dry sound" seemed to happen as each channel cancelled the other's reverb. It wasn't perfect but I thought it was an interesting effect. There are probably better ways to handle it, I just wanted to see what happened. [ Reply to This ]
Nice collab &mdash 03/26/07 - 07:55:55 AM
From a pure emotional perspective, I liked your original version better. Here's my highly subjective reaction: In the drum track - I didn't like the stick/clicks; I thought the rock snare generally overdrove the piece; plus, I didn't like most of the cymbal hits and overall MIDI feel; even tho the idea of a country rock drum track does give it a mainstream feel, from an arrangement perspective; I'd have used much less drumming and lightened the feel. Your vocals sound muffled, less alive than the original, even tho some might consider it more mellow, and your delivery is indeed like Jim Croce, whom I liked; and I wondered why it was panned left (lead vocals are usually centered). Even tho I thought you had too much reverb on the first track, I preferred that to this lack of hi EQ. The bass line is a nice addition, giving it a happier quality, well mixed and nicely thought thru, professional. But the overall effect is to bring it off the live stage, and even tho this is a nice arrangement, the compelling aspect in a song like this is the vocals, and last time I listened to every word you sang. But I really like that you are trying to perfect it. Great song. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Tobin, &mdash 03/26/07 - 08:28:51 PM
I really appreciate the thoughtful comments and am taking heed. I really believe my experiment on the vocal recording took away from the emotion. I was happier with the quality of the sound (more FMish, if you get my drift) but was concerned about the sterile quality. It was certainly more to the mood I was looking for (thanks to Neil's bass line); a touch more upbeat. I will have to play around a little more with the technique to see if it has merit for vocals. As for the drums, as I stated above I believe they hit the mark. They may have been distracting you from the vocals because the vocals were not sung as well, and for that I take full credit. I may try and re-sing the vocal line, but for now I will let it rest and try out what I've learned on a new project. Your comments, as always, well thought out and constructive, are always welcome here:-)Thanks for stopping by Tobin. [ Reply to This ]
Re the drums &mdash 04/07/07 - 06:52:25 PM
Hi Tobin, I agree to a pooint that the drums may have been better slightly less "up" on Joe's song - the benefit of hindsight! The drums weren't midi though - I used Drums on Demand loops from the country rock pack.
Appreciate your comment as usual - always food for learning.
Cheers,

Yeah, Croce feelgood... &mdash 03/26/07 - 09:09:47 PM
This just sits right... smooth, calming, and enjoyable. Some really tasteful guitar riffs and frills. Kudos Neil for your solid bass, as usual.
Well written, well sung... well.... a really good song. I'd DL this for sure if it were available.
cheers... [ Reply to This ]

Stirring track &mdash 03/30/07 - 01:22:18 PM
Wow Joe, this is a really nice piece of work. The production on this is great, loads of space, and I really dig the rhythm track - nice choice of sounds. The guitar licks and fills are really well used, and compliment the vocals really well - you've a voice full of character that works so well on this track - actually reminds me of Lou Reed in places.
I can only nod my head at Neils last comment!
Nice work, and nice to meet you.

perfect &mdash 04/24/07 - 12:25:38 PM
man, its like you guys were of one mind on this. Went and listened to the original and I think this is a sweet collab. Tobin's excellent comments not withstanding (guy's certainly got a good ear for this) Neil seemed to find a good balance. Although I will second the snare tends to be hot in places. The mix is super clean and the whole tune has a nice laid back vibe [ Reply to This ]
Thanks KTB! &mdash 04/26/07 - 07:39:37 PM
Appreciate your visit. Neil has a gift for a great groove( we seem to have similar tastes too) and Tobin nails that emotional connection. They are two of many great gifts here MJ. I am very impressed with your skills as a producer and your comments are encouraging me to try again. Thanks so much for dropping in. [ Reply to This ]
