Description:
I got a parcel at work today which turned out to be a Boss BR digital 4 track - about the size of a calculator with a built in mic,and includes batteries. So naturally I had to try it out.The room I finished cleaning today happened to have a harpsichord and a glockenspiel (actually it was a marimba I now know, thanks Bubowski!) neither of which I can play and I could only find one beater stick thing to play the marimba with,so what you hear is rapid wrist movement in one arm! I conclude that the Boss BR is a great little machine - the piano sounds a bit ropey but thats cos the mic wasn't close enough.I was able to just plug it in to my mac when I got home and extract the tracks as aiff files via Boss's free converter software. All in all though I'm impressed and love how pocketsize it is.The harpsichord is well out of tune with the piano but there wasn't much I could do about that.

The shamanic artwork is by artist Franz Widerburg who my old art lecturer wrote a book on

Hardware:
Boss BR portable digital with built in mic, multitrack, yamaha grand,a harpsichord,a marimba, and a little african percussion

How Cool &mdash 03/29/07 - 04:45:51 PM
It sounds clean for a hand-held unit. Nice little pieced together piece. BTW is that a marimba (instead of a glock?) Some debussy like chords floating around there on the piano, and the harpsichord sounds almost asian.

marimba &mdash 03/29/07 - 05:07:49 PM
hmmm i dunno now you come to mention it it could be a marimba - it was a pretty big thing with wooden bars....?

ok - I just googled images of a marimba - yep it was one of those - a glockenspiels metal I see.Well I've learned something there (:

Debussy often floats around when I'm improvising - dont know why, thanks Bubowski

Very nice, paddler... &mdash 03/29/07 - 08:03:37 PM
...very fine piece. Combining east and west. Made even sweeter by the knowledge of the spontaneous creation.

Do you know anybody that does animation in the style of the Widerburg artwork you've displayed? I have a piece of music that's right along those lines...

animation &mdash 03/30/07 - 04:03:28 PM
animation Widerburg style? - how about Widerburg? - well its always worth asking - he might be out of a job just now! - I dont know anyone who even paints like him.Thank you - I like being spontaneous though probably at a listeners expense

fooling no-one &mdash 03/30/07 - 04:07:06 PM
thanks vic - I'm a bit of a one card horse (is that the right phrase) maybe I'm even a bit of a one trick pony (maybe thats it) reaally when improvising I just turn on the old 'ethereal' switch - works for me..

Another smashing tune..... &mdash 03/30/07 - 10:03:55 AM
This piece of music is great because of the circumstances of its creation.

I enjoyed the contrasting styles and sounds and I too spotted the faint Ghost of Debussy in amongst the mix.

Take care.

Paul.

Aye Yaye - heres a toast to curcumstances known and unknown.Did you notice the ghost of frank zappa though, teasing debussy's tush with a bogbrush? i suspect not Thanks Paul (paul? hope thats your name)

Cool instrumentation &mdash 03/30/07 - 04:24:22 PM
Something about the timing and the timbres makes me think of east Asian music. Marimba and harpsichord are two instruments that I just love the sound of, so I'm really digging listening to this.

Thanks Vortex &mdash 04/01/07 - 10:42:00 PM
Its not often I get a chance to play harpsichord so I think I'm a bit lucky there.Have you ever heard Evelyn Glennie - she just blows my complete mind, whats left of it! Also Ruth Underwood on alot of the Zappa albums - wow what a gig those two could do together,if indeed they haven't already

Thank you Michael2 &mdash 04/01/07 - 10:47:49 PM
I'd reccommend the Boss BR to anyone obsessed with recording stuff - you can quite literally make an off the cuff 4 track mix without budging an inch - if you do vocals for instance.Pretty cheap too. Thanks for taking time to comment, pleased to meet you - I look forward to hearing your stuff also

This sounds wonderful - &mdash 03/31/07 - 10:10:32 AM
you do an admirable job on the harpsichord - at times it sounds like a Koto - and with the marimba the piece takes on a very oriental feeling. Nice work - and a cool toy for new inspiration.

Thanks bud &mdash 04/01/07 - 10:52:58 PM
Its weird - I was worried that the harsichord would sound like a synthesized voice - some pitched samples these days are as good if not better sounding than the real thing.Listening back carefully though, there are far more imperfections with the real thing - the strings are out of tune in different ways across the length of the keyboard I think - some notes sharp, others flat and also you can hear the strings buzzing too.The marimba I just love - I recently got hold of a track called Schulwerk by Carl Orff that is used in a few films like Badlands and its just beautiful
