Description:
This is my first attempt at working seriously with audio. The production is still full of warts and all, but I’ve posted here for some feedback.
Sadly, the singing cannot be improved. I’m afraid that particular piece of hardware would take many years to fix. Besides, there is still too much uncertainty in such an endeavour.
I’ve used EQ and compression, and a bit of special effects here and there on the voice.
With the instruments, originating in midi, and subsequently recorded to audio, I’ve tried boosting the bass a lot. Yet, however impressive it sounds on my speakers, it does not translate that well on ordinary headphones
My biggest problem is loudness maximisation which I try to achieve with a limiter on the final mix-down. But it becomes very obvious in some parts.
The lyrics of the piece are taken from the Bononian Enigma (a somewhat puzzling inscription found on a Roman tombstone in Bologna). for this piece, I only use the first half of an early English translation dated from 1845
Lyrics:
AELIA LAELIA
Nor male, nor female, nor hermaphrodite,
Nor virgin, woman, young or old,
Nor chaste, nor harlot, modest hight,
But all of them you're told -
Not killed by poison, famine, sword,
But each one had its share,
Not in heaven, earth, or water broad,
It lies, but everywhere !
Hardware:
some very dodgy vocal chords !
Software:
BFD drums
Emu module
East West Orchestral Gold

Crazy cool &mdash 03/30/07 - 07:59:11 AM
Pretty jumbled up piece of jazz type music. Its cool and very differnent. Nothing wrong with the vocals - it suits this - hard to tell what kind of singer you are since this is more of a speaking part (kinda). The sound of the strings is very good. Might look into getting that software myself.
This piece does need a l little ironing out alright - not much though. Sometimes I like to hear mistakes or pops and stuff. It makes the piece more human. sweet [ Reply to This ]
Definitely "talking" &mdash 03/30/07 - 08:12:53 AM
Gav, I take great encouragement from your comment, especially as I just listened to your immaculate SMILE, thanks.
By the way, I am, and will steadfastly remain, a “talking” kind of singer.

Wowie! &mdash 03/30/07 - 03:39:16 PM
I BIG-TIME love this. It's tremendously original and has a wonderful overall vision that's uniting all the disparate elements. I pressed the download button half-way through because I knew I had to have it. I love the mix of old and new in this, horns and strings, crazy piano, synthesizer and those terrific BFD drums. Pie uses them too and it's an amazing piece of software in the right hands.
Your voice is absolutely perfect for this and I can't agree with you about the 'dodgy' portion of your assessment. Completely appropriate, more like.
The only production element that jumps out at me is that horn is a little loud in the right ear, other than that you did a great job, really very good and imaginative. This is a terrific advertisement for the East West Orchestral Gold. How much tweaking did it take to get that realistic string sound?
Very, very, very good and I can't wait to give it repeated listenings. [ Reply to This ]
You're too kind &mdash 03/30/07 - 04:57:45 PM
Hey Ledebutant ! I am greatly honoured. And thank you for your much too kind comment about my voice.
It is very strange hearing myself “sing”. The whole process was agonisingly laborious: I must have literally gone through all the effects Cubase had to offer, trying to disguise my voice at first. In the end I took the plunge and simply used loads of EQ and a bit of compression - it covers it up enough so as to make it different, but not unrecognisable.
There was no tweaking required for the string (solo cello), that’s just one of the very good samples from East West orchestra.
Thanks for stopping by, and I am very pleased you like it.

Surprise! &mdash 03/31/07 - 04:50:25 AM
I had little idea what to expect from you, and I am pleasantly surprised. You get a lot of sound out of whatever you id with the production. The bass sounds solid on my 'phones, and indeed, all the instruments sound fantastic. The more I listen, the more I like what you've done here. Very iinnovative stuff indeed. If I have a nit, it is that I'd like your voice slightly bigger in the mix.
Excellent post!
Neil

Thank you &mdash 03/31/07 - 05:42:51 AM
Thank you jguma, I’m glad I was able to surprise you pleasantly.
I had to pluck up quite a bit of courage for this piece. I decided that if I was going to dare add my vocals, the only way I could do it was to do a sort of bad imitation of Mark Hollis whom I worship. Hence the low volume whisper effect. As a first attempt, I thought: best keep it slightly in the background.

Excellent &mdash 04/01/07 - 10:05:51 AM
The only thing I would change about this piece is those little staccato guitar chords. That's the only thing. Don't be so hard on yourself about vocals, they're not bad at all. My favorite is the drums. [ Reply to This ]
welcome ! &mdash 04/01/07 - 11:23:22 AM
Hey geshwartes, welcome !
I know what you mean about the staccato guitar bits, they tend to be slightly intrusive. I’m just wondering whether they could be fixed in a remix, or maybe I should just cut them out altogether, as you suggest ? Anyway, food for thought when I’ll eventually come back to this piece with fresh ears.
It's very nice of you to drop by - oh wondrous explorer of the deep ! - lol, I’m still under the influence of your great whale pieces.

cool tune... &mdash 04/02/07 - 04:29:36 PM
innovative, eccentric jive jazz piece that grows and drew me in the more the song went on. Mood tune if there ever was. I like this... shows how the whole is so much more than the individual parts. Kudos. [ Reply to This ]

Dadai, I'm glad you stuck with it until the end. Thanks for your comment which is much appreciated.

Hello Feter,
I was pleasantly surprised to see this song is still getting comments. So thanks a million for stopping by. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think some of the sound is slightly distorted from too much compression, I'm not sure there is any clipping though. Anyway, I am still a total newbie when it comes to production.
All the best.

lots of great details in here &mdash 06/18/07 - 07:56:12 PM
you develop a great mysterious mood (i assume that was your intent? it worked!)
a choice of instruments and effects works really well.
i like those crickets a perfect way to wrap it up

Cool mashup &mdash 06/29/07 - 10:04:15 AM
This was fun. I always feel bad when a song gets lost in the "Other" genre. Consider Acid Jazz? (Dang, I just noticed there is no Acid Jazz category.) Its not NuJazz but is new jazz. Ok, I guess "Other" works. (If there was an Acid Jazz category, or a remix/mashup, would you have chosen it?)
Cool track. I dug the authentic vocal stuff, like a forgotten prayer chant lost in the random movement of time. [ Reply to This ]
This... &mdash 06/30/07 - 01:43:52 AM
...caught my attention right away. I loved the curious vibe, the merging of different elements. At times some of them seemed forced, but overall it worked well. Nice one. [ Reply to This ]

Love the harmonic sense in this piece. To quote Prokofiev in reference to Stravinsky,' most insolent'. Excellent orchestran, and the quirkiness of the rhythmic design works well. Cool piece! [ Reply to This ]
