is it really possible to sing all the lyrics, as is, with that melody? it sure seems that way... given your juxtapositionings... this is brilliant!
perfect for the end of the week... i can feel my sanity sliding away...
so did you run a high fever? that would explain it. get well soon.

Bill - no fever - but no voice &mdash 03/30/07 - 06:40:02 PM
I did sing it and it actually fits the melody. But it was so nasal I decided to let Vicki take over. I like playing the tune on my bass and a while back I just started singing Lucy in the Sky and it worked. Now it's all I hear. Thanks for your comment. [ Reply to This ]
I'd have never thought of this... &mdash 03/30/07 - 06:41:46 PM
...and it's brilliant. Perfect juxtaposition. If you're looking for someone to tell you that this is a bit "over the edge"...you've come to the wrong place, bud.
There's nothing like a plunge over the edge to refresh the senses. And, if you're feeling a bit "squemish" about it...there's always a parachute handy, in case you need one.
Very cool piece, Bud. For some reason (can't imagine why), I can imagine an occasional drone from a sitar in there...maybe betwixt verses. I've been jamming with an excellent player, lately...but he's on the road so much. It's hard to get him on here.
You go, bud... [ Reply to This ]
I like the sitar idea - &mdash 03/30/07 - 07:13:45 PM
There is a drone in parts but it's a bit buried. I used to have a sitar voice for the keyboard that I can't find lately. Thanks for dropping by. [ Reply to This ]

beat-(le) poetry. i ain't surprised that you would attempt this. Vicki's good but Fred has the goatee. i've wondered about using a speech text voice, how did you record that? ten snaps of the fingers!

Beat-le poetry - very good Vic &mdash 03/30/07 - 09:39:26 PM
I like that. I recorded Miss Vicki headphones out of my G5 to to GB on my iBook using the little iMic adapter. You have to set the output low to get close to line level. I also found that you have to add a lot of commas to the text in order to get some meter out of Vicki, and I set her speed a little slow. I wonder if it isn't a little too slow, but I kind of like the feeling like she's drugged or something. After that it was about an hour of cutting and pasting, slipping and sliding and then finding the right efx. I doubled her with one track "Live Performance" and the other track "Epic Diva".
This piece started as a Reggae experiment (I was headed for Augustus Pablo)- and I spent a long time building the drum track to a bass loop. There are about 6 rhythm tracks - mostly for different efx/delay times. I was working in bed on my laptop which is old and pitiful so I had to keep bouncing everything down to go any further. Just like in the 4 track days. When I scrapped the loop and started playing bass, no way I could lay an effective dub line down - I no longer smoke pot - so I defaulted into a kind of waltz swing which became My Favorite Things. The rest is just a few more overdubs (guitar, piano, electric piano, key sax), and then Miss Vicki. My wife pointed out that she has a knd of Astrud Gilberta vibe.
Fun in bed. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the support guys &mdash 03/31/07 - 10:25:30 AM
I really appreciate the comments and acceptance of this piece. First I figured MY Favorite Things is about as close to public domain as any song gets given it's treatment in the jazz world, and then lifting the lyrics from Lucy makes this more of an appropriation than a cover. Of course Judge Judy would have none of it - but I don't recall hearing any of her music lately.
PS - by the time I was done - I'd fallen in love with Vicki. Next: Vicki Reads the Phonebook. [ Reply to This ]

I don't want to take this down a bad road &mdash 03/31/07 - 02:19:50 PM
but it occurred to me that you could have Vicki say whatever you want, which could be kind of provocative I suppose. And not to be sexist - the same could be done with Fred. Actually a dialog between Fred and Vicki could be really amusing - maybe a cover of I've Got You Babe. [ Reply to This ]

it's either criminal or whacky enough to earn a get out of jail free card.
You're definitely exploring new territory with the last few songs. Maybe you should get sick more often. It's working out quite nicely.

This is indeed "very strange." But "no one I think is in [your] tree (I mean it must be high or low.)"
All in all, the best version of "Vicki On The Floor With Diaphrams" I've ever heard!

Brilliant! &mdash 04/05/07 - 12:39:18 PM
The more we let go, the more we rock, or so it seems. This is awesome, Bud - I have to say, in a good way, it makes the brain work, my eyes darting even under closed (KA-lide-a-Scope) eyes. It's a musical fever dream - accessible as smooth jazz can be, while slicing open a window to the surreal in comparing not only the textures (computer voice against organic) but the essence of each tune (one line spoken, not sung - melody inferred - one line played melodically, no lyrics).
This track did what so few do these days - it tickled my brain. Thanks for posting this! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for commenting &mdash 04/05/07 - 01:56:39 PM
Your observations are right on. It's actually possible to sing LitSwD to the melody on MFT - and it fits. This whole started when I kept getting the lyrics of the two songs mixed up while playing MFT on the bass. But the spoken computer voice makes your brain do the connecting and it becomes something of a listening puzzle.
Glad you enjoyed it.
BTW - any thoughts on Classical Reggae? Dub Bach? It's another puzzle I've been pondering. This song actually started as a Reggae experiment with the drum track - but morphed into MFT. [ Reply to This ]
In fact - &mdash 04/08/07 - 04:01:52 PM
I finally figured out a piece that could translate well to a smallish band setting in dub - how about Beethoven's 9th? With its straight-ahead melody, it lends itself well to a skank - what do you think? It would be much more obvious to go with the 5th symphony, but Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band already took a stab at funkifying that tune back in the 70's.

oh oh .. busted .. da police is here ;o) &mdash 04/05/07 - 02:41:49 PM
.. we do like a good tune with Vicki on top .. oo er
missus .. I had loads of fun with "Good news" for my xmas post .. btw, with OSX if you go into Applications->Utilities and open a "Terminal" and type the following at the prompt:
say -v Vicki -o demo.aif "insert your lyrics here"
you can skip all that mucking about with cables and
levels and get a nice .aif file (the -o means where to put the output) recording of any system voice (the -v option). It should appear on your desktop, ready for dragging into GB etc.
Deranged and Vicki do Sonny and Cher might .. just ..
work .. ;o)
