Description:
This track was conceived and recorded in less than 10 minutes but don't let that put you off. I created a chord sequence on the fiddle and then improvised over the top of it. It was just an idea that I was 'jotting' down however, I'm posting it because I'm very pleased (and surprised) with the results - to me it has a drive, energy and passion which would be hard to replicate if I was to try and redo it. Okay there's one or two extraneous sounds and I will want to develop it further at some stage but here it is ... if I've aroused your curiosity I hope you enjoy!

Very unusual overall sound - love the rhythmic stabs and the trills (or should I say turns) in the melody part.It has a really bright sparkly timbre and while its perfect as it is - I would love to hear a low cello part and some kind of drum dancing along, infact I'd love to play those parts but I have neither cello or drum.Excellent creation - inspiring

Not sure about drums... &mdash 04/06/07 - 08:29:34 PM
... but I might go for a string quartet!

Many thanks! &mdash 04/06/07 - 08:42:37 PM
I mentioned a string quartet in response to The Paddler's comment but for the moment I'm very interested with what I can do with just fiddle (albeit two or three of them playing on the same song as it were) and the emotional energy and power I can wrest from this set-up.

Cheers

You know... &mdash 04/07/07 - 08:00:41 PM
... I hadn't really thought of this as being 'classical" but having had a bit of space on it now I can understand where you're coming from. Previous commenters have suggested adding cello and that kinda makes sense - I would love to hear it played on by a string quartet. I could manage first and second fiddle plus viola - need to find a cellist tho'!

Many thanks for listening and commenting.

To your usual flair for melody.... &mdash 04/02/07 - 05:59:06 AM
...and for emotive playing, is added a little rhythm, a little grit, and the twists and turns of improvisation...

It's very cool that you caught this winging by, and cooler yet that you shared it just as is with the rest of us... This one's full of life, and I love it...

Reminds me of a million things and all sorts of directions... This morning, 'cause it's on my mind already, it recalls the rhythmic bits of 'Eleanor Rigby'...

The cello idea is a good one... I remember once watching John Cunningham work on a thing like this, and using a five string fiddle to get lower, cello-like tones to underpin it all...

On the other hand, it's going gratefully into my iPod rotation just as is... It really does sound so alive...

Funny you should mention... &mdash 04/07/07 - 08:11:22 PM
... five string fiddle - that's kinda been going through my mind of late, either that or getting a viola. I think it's time I got a new electric fiddle and the maker I'm interested in does a five string but I imagine it's set up quite differently from a 4 string and so using it might present challenges - oh to be wealthy beyond my wildest dreams then I'd get a four string, a five string and a viola (and probably learn cello too so that I could create stuff for string quartets)!!

Whatever... thank you for your lovely and insightful comments.

G, D or A? &mdash 04/02/07 - 08:39:07 PM
I really like the rhythmic thing happening with the chords for starters, and especially keen on the melody, which is both haunting and exciting (in an anticipatory kind of way). I can hear this as being part 1 of a much longer piece which opens out into fuller instrumentation and even vocals. This is a very rewarding listen Martyn!
Cheers,
Neil

Not completely sure about the chords &mdash 04/15/07 - 08:00:11 PM
I'd have to work them out again! However I suspect that whilst this moves beyond GDA in places... it largely hangs around D.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Awe and admiration &mdash 04/04/07 - 06:02:13 AM
Your playing always completely enchants me and this is no exception.

It's beautiful exactly as it is and it also has huge potential to develop into something bigger and more elaborate if you have the inclination. Being an improv it's already full of the heart-wrenching expressiveness which you do so well.

I just love the little twiddles and gentle little sliding notes which you've made your trademark. You will hereafter be known as Komrade Magicfingers.

Thank you &mdash 04/15/07 - 08:08:04 PM
Of course, your feedback on the 'preview' listen had much to do with me posting this in the first place. I would like to develop it further but that's going to take some courage and possibly take me off in a kind of classical direction - in other words: uncharted territory...

Full of good energy! &mdash 04/04/07 - 01:20:26 PM
Your music always has this light, fresh feel to it and I always enjoy your improvisations. Hope you will develop it further, especially the beginning has this lovely melody which could be devleloped further. Will check back for updates!

You're right! &mdash 04/15/07 - 08:36:38 PM
I definitely want to do more with that melody line - and try and keep the energy if I do develop it further...

Many thanks for your feedback

great track! &mdash 04/04/07 - 03:59:39 PM
totally diggin the progression and rich rythymic feel of this. 10 minutes? This is really fine. Do you record with a pick up or do you mic it?

nice one kk &mdash 04/05/07 - 09:05:29 AM
Whats the story behind it? Somehow it seems very much at one with that lovely picture. Is there a connection or am I just on visual overload? Can't wait to see what this turns into.

Well... &mdash 04/06/07 - 08:34:50 PM
... the title does have a personal significance but that's all I'm saying! The picture? Well it's twilight in a place called Beacon which has nothing to do with the Beacon in the title - however, I liked it's mood and I didn't fancy the idea of posting one of the many pretty sunset over a hill pictures that cropped up in my image search.

Wonderful &mdash 04/05/07 - 10:02:58 AM
for an improvision this brings a certain elegance and effectiveness. It's borderline brilliant and I was craving more! I agree with paddler that this song would benefit from the use of a drum groove or something of that nature, it practically begs for that 'epic' sound. wonderful.

Gorgeous &mdash 04/05/07 - 11:24:34 AM
Not only gorgeous, but exciting! This track brims with delicate energy - enough to propel it forward quickly, but delicate in its vision. Many images sprung to mind of a lady in a fur coat fumbling through her purse on a cold winter morning, looking for spare change to purchase.....I mean - just like that, full-on scene that this could be underscore for. It's beautiful in a classical sense, but also very purposeful and engaging. Excellent playing, wonderful expression and note colors.

love this! &mdash 08/27/07 - 08:49:46 PM
This is a very enchanting piece. Really enjoyed listening to it. Being a hopeless romantic - this song for me can be interpreted many ways - which keeps me listening to it over and over. Wonderful job. I wish it was longer but thank you for sharing this jewel!

Well I have a romantic side too! &mdash 08/28/07 - 03:00:17 PM
However the memory that prompted the title this was a kind of emotional pile-up! I do come back to this piece from time to time and have a think about what else I might do with it - it was improvised but there are some themes in it which I'd like to take further but you know how it is - there's a million and one other things I'd like to work on and there's so little time....

I hope you don't mind me coming in as a latecomer here but I wanted to have a listen to some of your back catalogue.

I'm really knocked out by the quality of your playing and the expressive power you bring to it.

You are a very special talent and an asset to MacJams.

Don't mind? &mdash 11/18/07 - 09:19:46 PM
I really appreciate having comments on tracks long after they're posted - I hate to think that they're effectively dead after the first few days they've been up.

Thank you for such wonderful feedback - I've tried a number of musical routes and there's some others I need to try. This track represents a strand that I'll definitely take forward in various ways.

Thanks again
