...so much! I am a k-8 music teacher and so I have observed that kids listen with very open ears and will give pretty much anything a chance, but they are also remarkably sophisticated musically and they are brutally honest if they don't like something! So when I write and record my own "children's music," I am trying to pass the "kid test:" Would one of my students actually ask for this song, or will they groan and start talking to their neighbor every time I try to sing it?

Also, as a parent of 3, I know how important it is for children's music to be listenable for the grown-ups in the house, too!

...been waiting for your first and it's wonderful!

Read your bio. Take it you're doing all the tracks? Great blend.

Reggae and (to my ear) some Buddy Holly blending into what's obviously your own style. I really love the lyrics. I'm a teacher, too...and, as you know, love my daughter. I love the way kids think. This captures it perfectly.

It's the best when somebody uses what's right for the piece and doesn't try to show off anything else that's really not necessary. Tasteful. I've got a good friend who's a pro percussionist/composer/etc., too. You've obviously got it going, Brian. I'm very into this piece and looking forward to what's coming up next (and next) (and next)....

As you guessed, I'm playing everything. I still need to tweak the percussion a little, and the bass might be a little too loud in the "half-time" bridge. This was supposed to be the scratch vocal, but I like it, and so I think it's staying, and after the marimba solo there is supposed to be a sax solo but my friend hasn't come in to lay it down yet.

So, what subject do you teach?

Subjects I teach:
I'm a Special Ed teacher. I've taught from K-8. Lately it's been 4th through 6th grades. My kids have problems handling their emotions. Many have learning disabilities.

I'm a homeroom teacher. Use a lot of different approaches to teach reading/writing/math/art/music/computers. I like to combine.

A big part of my job is teaching the kids socialization skills and how to cope with their environments. It's challenging...and I really like it.

...for your post. You can't know how flattering and cool it was for you to make the Paul Simon comparison. I love that guy, and have everything he has ever recorded. I used to be part of a duo in college that did the whole Simon and Garfunkle thing (not nearly as cool in the mid-90s as it would have been in the mid-60s!) and when I did the arrangement for Rainbow Sandwich, I was definitely thinking of Paul Simon's Graceland album, with whoever that really young South African fretless electric bass player was. Now that you bring it up, though, I can also totally hear the "Kodachrome" vibe with the offbeat acoustic guitar part. Good ears, man!

Hey, I just checked out your stuff, and it rocks! The boogie swamp dixie vibe is fun, but I got totally drawn into the basement window song. Nice!

OK, I wasn't going to share this, but I have to admit that the marimba was played on a keyboard. Specifically, an old consumer level Yamaha PSR-530. (By the way, RE Marimba/Xylo- not too big a difference between the two- marimba is like a xylo but pitched an octave lower, almost always has more range in both directions, and is usually played with soft yarn mallets, so it usually sounds warmer than the xylo.) I actually studied classical percussion, and so I really can play the marimba, but the marimba sound on my cheesy old Yamaha is just great! Absolutely better than I have gotten every time I've tried to mic a real marimba.

Yamaha seems to have made a decision a few years ago to have a pretty clear dividing line between their entry level consumer stuff (now sounds like a cheap toy) and their high end pro stuff (you pay through the nose). But there was a brief shining moment 8 or 9 years ago when you could buy a consumer level board like my PSR-530 for $400 bucks and get some really high quality sounds. I use that thing in orchestra pits all the time for everything from timpani to glockenspiel, and universally get raves from fellow pit members, and outright disbelief when I try to tell audience members that the percussion sounds came from an electric keyboard.

Maybe more info than most of you needed, but hey, its a forum for musicians, so that's my marimba secret.

Turns out that I live on Martha's Vineyard and so I've met JT (though never played with him- damn, maybe someday...) I have shared a bill with Taj, though, at an event at Carly Simon's house, no less! I played after Father Guido Sarducci and before Taj Majal, and as I looked out into the audience, Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith was checking me out! He talked to me afterwards, and it turns out he was mostly interested in my clear lucite guitar, but hey, it was still pretty cool!

This is such fun! I love the lyrics and the sentiments expressed - the energy and bounce in this tune are quite contagious. You really captured that "Graceland" vibe - this song toes the line between children's music and adult contemporary so well, I can see it being produced on either side, which is a hard feat to manage, but you pull it off with lightness and style!

I'm glad you gave a listen! As a parent and a music teacher, I really want my children's music to be just as enjoyable for the parents, so I'm very happy when you say that this song could go either way- that's exactly what I was shooting for!

Gotta go to work, but I definitely wanted to respond to you. I've been listening to some of your older stuff and been blown away! I was listening to "Casualties of Faith" and I just have to say that your distorted lead dulcimer is so unbelivably cool! You had an excellent comment at some point that pretty well exactly sums up what I was thinking as I listened to your music: you wrote something like: "if the radio was playing music as good as what people are contributing to Macjams, I'd still listen to it."

Great Song!
Rainbow sandwich... what a wonderful idea, and you've created a superb song to carry it. The Paul Simon references are well-deserved; this is really, really good. I'd play it in my car on a summer evening, loudly, with the windows down and tapping the steering wheel. And people would hear it, grin, and start dancing... traffic cops would be bopping away, blowing their whistles in time with the song... soon the whole city would be snapping their fingers, smiling and singing.

Songs like this can save the world - or at least the little corners of it we live in. Thanks!

Cool song.
I especially like the marimba break! I also like that you have the colors of the rainbow in the correct order. The bass groove is really catchy, but could maybe be moved back in the mix, a bit. Your melody instruments could come forward a bit more to support your vocals. I'll bet you sing this with students. This would be really fun with 1st & 2nd graders. It's good to see this kind of song - not too cute, but not too serious either - nice balance!

I think your observation about the bass being too loud is a good one. I wanted it to somewhat up front, of course, for this style. I brought it up to what I thought was good, but now that I've heard it on other people's systems, I think you're right that it's a little too much.

This will be the opening and title track of my children's CD, so I appreciate the feedback!

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been away from MacJams for a while, and didn't know you'd posted. Thank you very much for the listen, and for your kind and encouraging words. If you like Fluffernutters you must be from New England, like me! My brother never could decide if he liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or fluffernutters better, so he'd usually just put peanut butter, jelly, and marshmallow fluff together into one big gooey mess! I couldn't even watch him eat it! He used to put orange juice in his cereal, too. He told me it was "to save time."

Anyway, I just went over and checked out the song you sang for your mother. I LOVED it, and I'll bet she did, too. Music can really touch people's hearts, and I think you have done that with your singing on that song. Great job! Sing more!
