Description
I threw this music up on the forum cause I never found a good vocal for it. Chris (SicTransit) and I had it sitting around for months in various incarnations. Steve (echoroom) answered the call and was nice enough to lay down some inspired vocals on the track. This is the alternate version with the original keyboard still in. To hear the better take go to echoroom's page on MacJams.

Lyrics
They Come with Smiles (Lyrics by Echoroom)

Mirror mirror on the wall
Tell me who's responsible for
All the trouble laid before me;
I can see right through that screen.
While the country sleeps they work
Storming dreams for folk to follow.
So stand behind the rope and scream but
I wanna be in that scene, not

Watching from afar (x2).

When life is good it could be great
Can't resolve that contradiction.
You just step out to buy some nails
Don't mean to start a crucifixion.

Watching from afar (x2)

Every night the same
The voices on the radio that dog your name.
Die and rise again,
Telling you to compromise, economise
They come with smiles (x2).

When life is good it could be great
Can't resolve that contradiction.
I just stepped out to buy some nails
Didn't mean to start a crucifixion.

Sleeping in the car...
Don't drop your guard ...

Every night the same
The voices on the radio that dog your name.
Die and rise again;
Telling you to compromise, to socialise
They come with smiles (x2).

I hear...
...a hint of David Bowie in the vocals. Very cool tune! Hot guitar solo near the end! Nice mixing on this piece. I wonder if keys might be a tad too high in the mix early on...but not enough to be a big distraction. It might be nice to let the end ring out a bit more. But again, very nice stuff!

always a dash of Bowie
I think that everything we do has at least a hint of Bowie. It is inescapable! I've always liked that guitar solo, probably my favorite.

Obviously a work of genius!
Well, this is just fabulous, and everyone involved obviously has sky-scraping talent!
If I'm honest, I think I could've done a better job on the mix of this version, but I think I'd just spent too long on the song - I should've left more time between the first version and this.

I like the fact that this version is a bit more rocky, and I always liked the horns and strings in the chorus, as it gives it a kind of epic feel. Anyway, the solo still sounds fantastic, and the bass really drives the song.

I'm really proud to be part of this song.

The mix
Funny, I totally like the mix you posted better. Your intuition about it needing to be stripped down a bit was right on. This one is fun to listen to, but I like your version better.

Nice bed
This is a great musical bed for Steve to lay down his excellent vocal performance. Production on this is sweet! My only complaing is that I would like to hear a longer reverb trail on the end. Excellent collaboration gentlemen.
