Keywords:
Ornette (1)tribute (33)free jazz (3)harmolodic (1)sadness (25)doughnut (1)ESP Disk (1)synth bed (1)
Description:
A humble tribute to Ornette Coleman.
Another slow processor iBook G3 GB1 in bed experiment.
The synth bed ( 5 tracks analog live) was mixed and bounced. Keyed drums (2 tracks live) added and bounced. Keyed Sax, one track live. Bass, one track live.
I was thinking of an old ESP disk from 1962 at Town Hall. In no way do I compare myself to the man - just tried to capture a little vibe.

Hardware:
iBook G3
Sequential Circuits Pro-One Synth
Oxygen8 Keyboard
Ibanez Roadstar II Bass

Software:
GB1

excellent &mdash 04/06/07 - 04:18:54 PM
This has as many colors as the jacket in the pic! Great sound from the keyed sax. Your compositions get more complicated all the time. Did you play the bass in bed? great song!!!!!!!

Thanks Tim - &mdash 04/06/07 - 04:23:20 PM
Yeah - I actually did play the bass in bed - and I carted my old synth in too. I had to travel for work this week so I got sicker instead of better. So this was another bed trip - like Lucy last week.

It's just a GB3 midi sax voice &mdash 04/06/07 - 06:02:26 PM
played on the Oxygen8 keyboard using pitch bend to give some thangness. Glad you liked it. Thanks for droppin in.

abstractly over under sideways down wonderful. nice sax treatment from the keys. maybe you should compose from bed all the time.

just kidding get well soon.

ps Dennis Wilson stayed in his room for a long time, i think he had a sandbox in there as well.

Dennis Wilson had serious issues - &mdash 04/06/07 - 10:52:28 PM
I've got a drum set from Alice Cooper's band in my room. True. Nice of you to stop by and thanks for the well wishes. I got the drugs to day so I'll be fine by Bunny Day I imagine.

That's Brian Wilson that lived in his room for years.

must've been the drugs. Thanks for stopping by. I like just about any kind of music - free jazz included. I've had the pleasure of meeting Ornette on a number of occasions - he's a fan of my wife's painting. He's a wonderful, generous man. His Prime Time Band has long been one of my favorite outfits.

This is nice, and it's nice to find a free jazz fan on MacJams. The synth sax works remarkably well, imo!

Captures his essence quite well, bud... &mdash 04/07/07 - 03:33:26 PM
...sax sounds real nice.

This worked nicely. Kept to the theme, but used lots of coloration around it. Very cool.

It's nice of yu to comment on the vibe - I figured the Ornette connection was probably all in my head - but he has a certain plaintive sadness to his tone at times that just seemed to happen with the synth sax.

This is way out there. I certainly enjoyed the adventurousness of this piece and some of the staccato horn phrases were really cool. Overall I am impressed with the chances you took, flooding the piece with a great deal of unresolved tension.... yet at the same time there was a certain cohesiveness to the many of the phrases that seemed to hold it all together. You have a dark musical imagination.

I'm glad this hung together for you - that's the challenge with a piece like this - it can easily collapse like a bad soufle.
If you want a dark imagination - read Cormac McCarthy. I read The Road yesterday in one sitting. Great book.

Colette hit on me at Puffy's &mdash 04/09/07 - 04:38:02 PM
back about 1978. Freaked me out - I blushed beet red. Saw her at PS1 recently - she didn't even give me a second look. Fickle.

bud,
must admit, an amazing performance in bed having sax.

bud seriously, that mod wheel certainly sets an convincing horn vibe. The ocillating synth is an inspiration, a great storm of a fugue.

I agree, wonderful sound from that keyed sax. Nice ominous sound here...felt like it was foreshadowing some kind of musical doom. Get well soon!

Glad you liked it - &mdash 05/23/07 - 07:16:44 PM
and thanks for stopping by. The only "acoustic" element was the bass - the rest is all midi - including the sax.

This is &mdash 05/23/07 - 09:24:44 AM
weird and cool. One question, does "keyed" = "pencil tooled"? Do you really play all of these live? If so, you should start a one-person jazz quartet. You'd be unstoppable.

However you did it, sweet tune.
The sax at the end reminds me of Sex Mob's sax player, on tranquilizers.

tasty tribute

Keyed means played on the keyboard &mdash 05/23/07 - 07:14:34 PM
Each element was a one take improvisation with no editing. I did it during a time when I was sick and sat in my bed with my laptop, bass and Oxygen8 midi controller. Kind of a channeling thing. Thanks for your kind words.
