Description:
I know this song is doing well right now... but I couldn't live with a few things... sorry to muddle things up, but here is a preferable mix... Peter and Harold I left the mandolin in....

All the way back in hi school, a fellow art student was there one day and gone the next... I remember all her plans... for Wendy

My wife got me a mandolin for my b-day and this is the fisrt time I am recording with it... not sure how it fits in a mix yet...and I also have this little wood frog that I use for percusions.. all the other usual stuf guitars vocals... I usually do several mixes before I submit and I may regret this but I'll fix i later if need be...

Lyrics:
ALL OF OUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED
EVERY DAY HAS TO COUNT
TIME SLIPS AROUND THE BACK DOOR
THEN TIME RUNS OUT

I HAD A CLOSE FRIEND TELL ME
THERE’S TIME TO DO EVERYTHING
SHE HAD BIG PLANS FOR SUMMER
SHE DIED THAT SPRING

THERE’S NO BETTER DAY TO OPEN YOUR HEART
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY TO MAKE YOUR NEW START
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY LET HIM SHOW YOU HOW
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY THAN NOW

ALL OF OUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED
EVERY DAY HAS TO COUNT
TIME SLIPS AROUND THE BACK DOOR
THEN TIME RUNS OUT

HE HAD TO TEND TO BUISNESS
HIS FAMILY WOULD WAIT AT HOME
PLANS WERE MADE FOR TOMORROW
NOW HE’S ALONE

THERE’S NO BETTER DAY TO OPEN YOUR HEART
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY TO MAKE YOUR NEW START
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY LET HIM SHOW YOU HOW
THERE’S NO BETTER DAY THAN NOW

I think &mdash 04/09/07 - 06:08:32 PM
the mandolin needs to come up a bit

Just KIDDING!!!! :-)

Really sounds great. So glad you left that nice piece of work in there with the mandolin. It is awesome in this song, as your great guitar work really compliments it - not to mention all of these other elements you know 'how' to evoke, and how they compliment this song...

Such a nice song. Super nice.

I love how you took some really dark stories and both vocally and instrumentally turned it around into a bright optimistic feel. Great vision.

that was great to hear... I think this mix is certainly working better... and you're right she's something....

thanx you've been a great support

yeah, that's it &mdash 04/09/07 - 07:06:18 PM
You really got the mix sounding just right now. Everything sounds balanced, and the mandoline is settled in there nicely. The tone of the drums sounds a lot better too.

Great song. Now it's shining. Excellent work!

Hey Peter &mdash 04/09/07 - 08:19:20 PM
thank you for the help on this... you're right about that 5%... most of the tweeks were just minor... I seperated the guitar and bass a bit more frequency wise... I noticed that the cymals and snare were brittle because of over compression, so I let them breath more... then I poked some things in and out, and adjusted vocal levels and effects

5%

thanx again

Joni and Jaco and CSNY and so on... &mdash 04/09/07 - 07:44:48 PM
Joni Mitchell came to mind at first, with that touch of Jaco Pastorius on bass. Then the CSNY vocals come in! Extraordinary!

Scott, this is so wonderful. I liked the first version... our works never seem to be done. Remixing and rewriting and reworking.

Strong vox with brilliant harmonies. You have that "voice" of a true performer.

Multi-faceted musicianship. And that wonderul mandolin. My grandfather played his ass off on that instrument.

Refreshingly nostalgic, yet perfectly breathing anew.

Bravo, my friend!

Wow &mdash 04/09/07 - 08:24:25 PM
that's some comment... I have to work real hard to get recording quality mandolin... it's just so small... so I have to woodshed for awhile before I turn on the red light... and I love Jaco... you should hear my 17 yr old son play "portraits of tracy".. he used it for his berkely audition.. I was proud...

I'm real pleased that this worked for you... thanx friend

I don't even know why I comment ... &mdash 04/09/07 - 08:42:32 PM
... on your stuff anymore ... cause it's just that good .... my vote seems sort of small here .. hahaha my first thoughts were that it was reminiscent of "America" ... ah remember how good they used to make us feel back in the day? Always sounded great in the car while driving in the sunshine ... now your stuff is putting smiles on people's faces ... !

[ Reply to This ]
Ah, YES indeed... &mdash 04/09/07 - 09:13:43 PM
...I forgot about "America." Yet it was subliminally there as I listened. Certainly fitting analogy.

Making today better &mdash 04/10/07 - 07:13:57 AM
Excellent improvements. When you sing, I am always warmed and uplifted. But the unevenness of the original version distracted, made some of your message seem trivial, ordinary. Funny how that works. By making everything stronger, the honesty of your vocals remains front and center, everything backing is well crafted, and suddenly your track transcends. Thanks for working on everything again. It dances with soul.

[ Reply to This ]
thanx my friend &mdash 04/10/07 - 11:25:16 AM
I don't usually repost... but I couldn't listen to the other version without derailing... I think all of this stuff would require some more tinkering if I was going to put out an album... or better yet I would send it all to you

[ Reply to This ]
Even better on the second posting! &mdash 04/10/07 - 07:28:12 AM
You really smoothed this out- not to the point of losing the character, of course, but the mandolin entrances and percussion are no longer distracting. This is a very 'warm' sound for a subject that could be either cold and despairing, or overly sentimental. I think you got a really good balance in your lyrics as well as your music.

[ Reply to This ]
thanx Kristy &mdash 04/10/07 - 11:31:13 AM
It's amazing how minor changes... (some of them just increments), make such a difference...

and I think overly sentimental scares me more than a bad mix... when something become maudlin, there is no retreiveing it...

good ears over there "teach"

So Much Better &mdash 04/10/07 - 05:49:00 PM
This is really excellent in every respect. Your voice sounds terrific. Harmonies are rich and sweet, hues of CS&N no bad thing. Your guitar and mandolin blend very nicely, the mix is so much sweeter than the previous, which was good, but this is perfect. Great song. Glad you perfected it. Life is short, we'll be dead a long time.

Peace.

It's so smooth now! Stunning! Glad you left the mandolin. Everything balances and flows. Here%u2019s proof that you done good: I actually sat down with my little G3 ibook planning to do some writing, and after a little bit - you know how it is, you just want to see if there's anything new over at MacJams, and I saw your new mix posted, and so I clicked on it and %u2026WOW! Even through the cheesy half inch speakers it was obvious that this was going to be gorgeous. I plugged into my external speakers and my wife came practically running from the next room wanting to know who this was.

Just stunning, stunning, stunning.

It was helpful... thanx also for being so supportive... you've been a real confidence lift... Men without hats &mdash 04/11/07 - 09:38:51 AM
Well, it was great the first time, and now... it's still great! I'm not exactly sure what you changed, but the mix sounds just right to my ears.

The second mandolin solo (with a strumming pattern; it comes back again at the very end) is very catchy and reminds me of something... possibly "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats (?). No reason to change it or anything; I like it a lot, and I think it contributes to the greatness of your song. The song has a very heavy/serious message that is delivered in a very positive, upbeat way; it feels to me like you're saying, "life is short; enjoy it while you have it." The older I get, the greater my sense of urgency about making the most out of every day. Speaking of which... must go write some music!

seize the day my friend... write like there is no tomorrow...

I just found out hours ago that my older brother has a brain tumor... everything gets re-evaluated... only take along what we need... all the rest of this stuff is just "STUFF"...

sorry about the philosophy intrusion, it's just where I'm at this momment...

I actually changed quite a bit... lots of EQ and placement stuff.. some verb settings and then the obvious mandolin volume...

Oh yeh and "men whithout hats" they reminded me of "madness" some of my fav 80's stuff

thank Clark

Lunch time! &mdash 04/11/07 - 12:12:13 PM
CSNY meets XTC and they go have a late afternoon lunch outside of a tasty French restaurant and talk of death and other maudlin topics.
Everything is very pleasant with just a touch of foreboding...
After a long protracted feast, they part ways in such a French way.... kissing on the cheeks n' all...

of your lovely, well conceived and recorded songs Scott. This is so much in the JT mould - a very good thing of course. Love the Warwick - I really must lash out and get a fretless some day. Harmonies, lead vox and instrumentation all up to your fantastic writing. A;; pro quality.Congratulations!
Peace,

Thanx so much Neil &mdash 04/12/07 - 07:26:12 AM
with your ability, you could make a fretless sing... it certainly has such a usable voice for recording... I appreciate the JT compare too... I went to bed last night with a protable dvd player and headphones, and watched JT's live concert DVD... I'm so knocked out by his ease with a song, and the technical mix is remarkable... I'm gong back in the studio to remix a song "Mercy" that has a lot of distortion anyway... but I'm using that DVD as a road map...

good to have you back

I love this song you are a great musician and a great singer, the harmonies are really good.
