Description

this is my first ever recording of my band, using GarageBand as a studio. We have bee setting up, miking the drums and running them to an 8 channel mixer. I play thru the Pod into the board, and Bryan plays bass thru my line^amp into the board. We play and record, then use the recording as a template to overdub all the instruments again. Then GB becomes a very functional studio indeed!

This also represents my first ever recorded performance of electric slide guitar. I started learning some slide only last month, for my acoustic cd (almost done!)...I set up my old strat, PEARL, with high action and heavy duty strings. Using a short Dunlop fat glass slide on the ring finger, and NO PICK shakey!

I realize both recording quality and slide guitar technique require more work, but i was pretty excited about this little bit, and thought it would be fun to share and get feedback.

Slide guitar is really expressive and a total gas to play, so I amgoing to try and work as hard as i can to sharpen up the intonation. I am still hunting for the ultimate tuning for me.

not bad at all...
nice slide work, soulful... the mix sounds very clean, good bass sound. The lead-in to the song was a little rough, like you were just hunting around, but it settled in nicely. The only thing about the mix I didn't like much was having the rhythm guitar a-way off to the left in my headphones, but it wasn't too bad. Overall, a pretty amazing bit of work, sounds good!

I agree
that a little more raw would make a huge contributin. However, Thoroughgood may be going a bit far. Think Duane Allman. Clearly you have the riffs down (hate you :) but the "bite" is missing.

I didn't see an amp listed but Allman got a lot of his oomph back in the days when Crybabys, fuzzboxes and phase shifters were about all that was available by cranking Marshalls. Despite all the electronic wizardry we have today, nobody's been able to reproduce the sound of overheated tubes as far as I'm concerned.

If you're still experimenting with tunings, here's one I've always been happy with DBDGBE. I'm convinced it's what Elmore James used but who knows.

Love Pearl btw. A bit hard to tell from the photo if she's a blonde or antique white but if you gave her a tortoiseshell pickguard, black plastic and a blue Lace Sensor in the neck, she'd be the spittin' image of my No.1, The Bear.

Slide's a good direction for you, judging from the couple of tunes I've listened to lately

You've got a great feel for the slide, z. Looking forward to hearing more. Lots more.

Funny how you get different takes. I really liked the placement of the rhythm guitar and thought it was really, really well done. The rhythm section's real important with slide guitar. And rhythm guitar's key, IMHO. I was really impressed with what you've done here.

Dirty it up!
First off - kudos - what a great sound you're getting - proving once again that you don't need a million dollar rig to get a million dollar sound. Great mic setup on the drums - how many did you use? Don't you wish you had more inputs to get a nice ambient overhead to go along with that crispness?

Anyway - that said, your slide playing is great, Ziti - the only thing missing, as Mike mentioned, is MORE DIRT! It's pretty polite, as slide goes, and I'm wanting to hear you make that sucker cough, and drawl and spill its filthy guts! I'm looking forward to more live sounds from the Z-Crew!

i can dig the call for more dirt...if i was using the thorogood school as a guide...but I'm not. I am thinking along the lines of derek trucks and bonnie raitt....and there is an old african american gentleman named Freddie Roulette, who has a style of slide like you have never heard before...and that is more influential to me.

Three cat Clem, here on MJs is playing some killer nasty slide that I love, and i prolly will explore those realms.

It is pretty cool to be my age an have been playing this long, and have something like slide suddenly come up and have the opportunity and inclination to learn it. The finger picking part of it and having a guitar set up JUST for slide is the trick to learning how...slide is impossible for me to play on my regular guitar.

It sounds like it works!
The band recording seems to work just like you said Fran.

Really interesting to hear a little trepidation in your playing here after all those blazing tracks you've done on Ruby. This isn't meant as a criticism - far from it - just an observation of you getting used to the new medium. I bet in one or two more like this you'll be flying Pearl too. Bryan's little stacato bass runs are great - brought a big smile to my face!

Well, first of all...
I KNOW you're lying, 'cause I've played that guitar, and it didn't sound like THAT...As a matter of fact, it sounded kind of folk-rock-y, as I recall...

I think at this point, Fran, you've earned the right to be taken on your own terms and as your own reference point... I love the tone you've got going here, and I think it's in keeping with the tone that you prefer for your regular, fretted playing... It's not the same, but it's in keeping with who you are as a player...

I really enjoyed the intro bit and the way it all comes together when the band kicks in. A lot of my favorite tracks have bits like that. It sounds like what really happens when people are playing, and for my ears, it adds to the excitement.

Soundwise, I like the cymbal and snare sounds, and was surprised they are as good as they are. I think the Bryan bass sound is very solid, and he's locked into the kick drum. I wouldn't mind another dB or two on the kick to emphasize that. Listening over headphones, I could hear hiss come up just as the band's about to come in, which I assumed was you bringing up the faders on the drums. I didn't notice it over speakers. Do you have Bryan over in the right channel, or is that my bum ear acting up on me? I like the mix, and I like the rhythm guitar over in the left, so that's not a complaint, it's a question... I think it's a good, airy blues-style mix...

Reminds me of some versions of 'I'm Ready' that I've heard and liked...

Can't wait to hear more...

yes....the voice that i hear for slide is similar to the one i hear for my regular stuff...i have never been a fan of really distorted distortion(?)...i LOVE distrotion, but not fuzzface distortion. I love the distortion that a cranked amp gets...more natural to me and more expressive.

I also really appreciate the fact that you are recognizing my voice, and tell that it is from me!

Poor pearl, after months of such gentle and polite caresses and attention, she's back to the roughouse.....that poor guitar was with me thru my drinkinest days...and I was really kinda mean to her...I forgot how nice she sounds. I played the slide with the band for the first time yeaterday...what a rush!

Really cool to hear you rock out with a slide ziti! Enjoyed your take on it. As with all your stuff, the lead playing is excellent.

The only thing about listening to your songs is that the backing tracks always leave me wanting more. I know this is kinda traditional blues and all... but we've all heard these progressions a thousand times before. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just that with your musicianship, I'd like to hear something more innovative. Still, great playing as always.

to me, innovation within the blues form comes from developing a style or voice that is recognizable within the parameters of the structure. I tend to work within the traditional blues structures alot, and there are a lot of permutations to explore. But I feel a great deal of creative satisfaction from working within these structures.

I do have plenty of other music outside the traditional blues realm posted...check out KEY LIME, or TREPIDATION IN JEWELRY, or SOLITUDE for some other styles of music.

It's not only realer when you don't use a pick, it's also easier. Very smooth. If I was mixing, I think I'd probably up your volume in places. Pitch seems pretty good, hell. probaby better than mine anyway, but slide players always need better, if you see what I mean -. As to distortion, I always feel that is song-dependant; mature players tend to sound like themselves no matter what tone they have set-up in their effects chain. And whilst I'm being picky, I don't think the Pod is dynamic enough to get it right when you start digging in; I just don't hear speakers being thrashed the way they so gloriously are in a real set-up when the tone is similar to the one you're using. Pick, picky, picky. Great playing, some thought to the arrangement, great sound, good groove. Welcome to the club.
