Description:
So I found this really sultry, pretty piano loop on GarageBand. It was only a little over a minute long, so I cut it up, manipulated it, changed a little, and then wrote some lyrics and sang them. This is the result! I don't think it needs any other instrumentation, but once again, I ask you, MacJammers, let me know what you think???

Oh, BTW, is a rare NON-autobiographical song. Haha. I just wrote lyrics that I thought went with the music.

Thanks so much!
Stacey K. Black

Lyrics:
what now?
Stacey K. Black

what do you think is foremost in my mind
when i'm with you?
do you wonder if i'm happy?
do you care if i'm content?
do you give a damn if i really
said what i meant?

what do you think we should do next
in this affair?
should we buy a little house?
find something old, and something new?
i'm ready to take the next step
are you?

you gotta let me know
am i your dream come true?
we've said the three most important words...
we've said the three most important words...
i love you

you gotta let me know
should we start writing our vows?
we've said the three most important words...
what now?

Powerful vocal! You've got the chops girl! I like the lyrics and melody you came up with also. Very productive use of a loop!

the voice, the eyes, the passion... &mdash 04/13/07 - 04:22:57 PM
the smirk... great jazzy torch song here. I don't think it needs any muddying up... the piano seems a perfectly light partner to your strong vocal delivery here. This seems like a rather interesting departure from your other stuff, but I like this too. Very nicely balanced, well-recorded, perfect bit of reverb on the voice... what did you use for that, sounds like a *good* reverb unit (AUMatrixReverb? Or are you way beyond GB now?) And nice long sustain on the last piano note, great touch.

Thanks! &mdash 04/13/07 - 04:53:38 PM
Hey thanks so much! I record my vocals from a BOSS recorder, through a Lamda interface, and into my Mac and GarageBand. I use the "Live Recording" vocal setting, and I have the BOSS vox set at Compressor 2. It's pretty much my standard setting for vocals, unless I want something different. haha. Which is rare.
Thanks again for the nice comments!

Stacey

Wow, now that's using a loop right! &mdash 04/13/07 - 04:40:41 PM
I love the way you use your voice to deliver this. The lyrics are excellent, too, by the way. The single piano seems perfect to me. I could maybe stand a little string wash in the background, if done right. On the other hand, why mess with something that sounds so right now?

Very nice. Sounded very good with that piano.

It was a pimp by Drak that brought me here - and I'm glad I came to hear, now I'm hooked! Great music - voice - lyrics and passion. Color me a new fan. : )

Yes yes yes:)

How good it is. Just very loveable stuff. Great piano loop manipulation, and you've made a great song of it:)

Your voice is just soooo good Stacey!

Instant favorite... &mdash 04/13/07 - 05:11:55 PM
a new classic love song... that I am afraid can only be sung by you... which you have done amazingly well with feeling and a powerful sense of presence in your voice.

They call songs like this "standards." I call this song exceptional!

Stacey you are really gifted... &mdash 04/13/07 - 06:36:23 PM
the stuff that you know about how to deliver a song can't be taught... and when you're done with this completely classic vibed song... I absolutly believe every word that you've sung... and the cool thing is that you wrote it... there are so many singers out there who can hit all the notes, but give me a singer/songwriter, and you will find the heart of the song...

more to say.. excellent choice to let the piano carry the song... which by the way sounded like it was played for you, instead of you coming up along side it...

can I have your autograph

Nice technique &mdash 04/13/07 - 06:39:15 PM
Haha, I can really picture you singing this at the piano. Sounds great, I don't think more instruments are needed at all!

vocals &mdash 04/13/07 - 07:12:52 PM
Great vocals. It's amazing what all you can do with a loop. I like how the piano swells back and forth. You have a great voice, but you know that. I like the fact that you didn't really oversing the piece. It's just about right. We should do a collaboration one day :)

I LOVE MACJAMMERS &mdash 04/13/07 - 07:27:25 PM
I love you all so much. Thank you thank you. Okay, so, I think I'll keep it as is! I thought of trying some strings, but until I have access to a Violinist... I must stop trying to make my keyboard sound like real strings. It never works! haha!

Thank you again!

My Satin Doll... &mdash 04/13/07 - 08:10:49 PM
With the silken voice.

You have such a wonderful way of weaving the song with the feeling.

Leave it alone, Stacey.... It makes it ever so more personal this way.

I would only consider "lushing it up" if you decided to expand the composition with more verses.

As it stands now, it works perfectly, like a love letter. ;)

Congratulations, Stacey... &mdash 04/14/07 - 12:18:46 PM
Dadai's right... You just wrote a standard... You and that voice of yours could have a hit off of this one... but this is one of those ones that would have jazz vocalists lining up to cover it...

Don't forget to get a copy to Tony Bennett...

Great, simple, from-and-to-the-heart lyrics delivered with powerfully clear and simple conviction... Lovely melody...

If you ever wanted to try it with real piano, try getting Paul Page (or John/karmatoburn) to lay down a piano track for you... I'd bet they'd love to do it... Nothing wrong with this one, though...

Another MacJammer stepping well beyond The Realm Of The Gifted Amateur...

"But finally, it was in 2007 that the songwriting circle on the Internet site MacJams began to set the tone, standards and paradigms for how music would be done in the 21st century..."

Wow! &mdash 04/14/07 - 04:36:44 PM
What you've done here with the piano is really clever. Getting a chopped loop to sound so "whole" is really difficult, and you've pulled it off very well indeed. Vocals are excellent, as we've come to expect.
Nice one!

Crystal clear voice... distict voice styling... confident and sexy... are you wearing a shimmering dress, too? Sounds like a gentle caress on my eardrums. A cross of Nora and Sade.

No sequined dress.... yet! &mdash 04/15/07 - 06:48:20 PM
Y'all are too, too kind. But I love it.

So, now I just need to find a way to get it to Norah Jones. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Thanks again,

What happens after? &mdash 04/26/07 - 10:06:55 AM
Like a country singer crossing over into the cabaret R&B jazz world. Such a nice clean track. Simple, real, so controlled and well done. I really dig how you capture the blues of not knowing what happens next, the anticipation of wanting more, and the worry of hope. Fine, fine track very well performed.
