Description:
PLAY LOUD!!! - this is mastered a little low.
An attempt to get back to basic rock after a jazz experimental excursion. Created in GB1 on the pokey G3 iBook - neccessitating 4 track style bouncedowns to avoid crashes. Can't-go-back fun like the old days. Drums looped - all else played.
Trying for a Jesus and Mary Chain vocal thing.

Love is still waiting
She took the long way home
I'm gonna be there when she gets there
I'm gonna be there when she's home

Hardware:
iBook G3
Ibanez bass

You're so often the first in Vic - &mdash 04/14/07 - 02:56:01 PM
you win a toaster! Actually thanks for checking in and lifting me from the void. For a return to rock this sounds pretty tame as I'm hearing it now. Hey - I just listen to the little voice in my computer.

Drifter &mdash 04/14/07 - 01:19:56 AM
I really like how the lyrics drift to different sides of the stereo spectrum. Your Danelectro sounds pretty nice! It gives your song a nice nostalgic feel to it. Great job creating this on the G3. I don't think I would have the patience. My G4 sometimes gives me a headache so I no it must have been a b!^ch.

the drifting vocals is simply using the ambient vocals setting. The same can be achieved on any track by using tremolo and auto panning. Cheap trick - but fun. The Danalectro is really fun to play. I bought it used for $125 and fell in love.

great song bud &mdash 04/14/07 - 01:45:25 PM
this is great, it's making me think of a jazzy spacemen 3. perfect piece of psych-pop.

oops &mdash 04/15/07 - 03:34:12 PM
sorry about that. i seem to have been speaking in riddles lately!

before 1980, there was no CNN. that time, for me, is the approximate dividing line between traditional rock, and the following explosion of musical styles that emerged afterwards.

i thought your song captured that feeling of the rock of the seventies very well.

Oh - &mdash 04/15/07 - 03:43:23 PM
I was trying to wrap my head around Crosby, Nash and Nash. True- CNN is a time splitter - that's when I was doing all my 4 track stuff. Funny thing is I never went midi. Well briefly with a program called EZ Viz and a Korg M1 in the early nineties.

pre CNN &mdash 04/14/07 - 04:57:25 PM
a nice mix of rock - plus a little electronica snuck in there - groove - flowing waters - sitting back and taking it ALL IN - this is pre-CNN dude!

thank you Bud

When I got my Boss BR-8... &mdash 04/14/07 - 06:55:26 PM
...years ago...I loved that it was digitial, and I grew to love how I had to think in order to bounce tracks and make something with only 8 tracks...I was never THAT enamored of 4-track cassette bouncing, but bouncing when hiss didn't build up and the tracks didn't creep out of tune was neat... I think sometimes a lot of us do our best work when we're pressing up against a limitation...

I like the whole feel of this, from the bass and drum intro bit into the electric guitar stuff and then the vocals... Really simple individual bits that together add up to feeling like a full song... I like the changes in the drumming... I really like the Joy-Division-meets-surf feel of some of the guitar leads...

Heading straight for the iPod...

Ed

I spent a lot of time on a &mdash 04/15/07 - 03:13:31 PM
Tascam cassette 4 track - and really got into the science of the bounce. Keeping the hiss down without the dolby squash was a real challenge - but I loved the whole alchemy of 4 track composition.
GarageBand has been an amazing revelation in control and options - but there's something fun about limitations.
Thanks for your comments Ed - you're always very thoughtful and considerate.

Feel it!! &mdash 04/14/07 - 07:06:35 PM
MAn right on, the changes, the vocals, the bass, guitar everything moves with a completeness. LIke the background synths and play on notes almost oriental in some parts. Then back to the basics with the driving vocals. I think this is new ground time to walk straight ahead!!!!!!!

...nice layering starting with the drums and bass. I like the minimalist lyrics and the various guitar sounds. Has a bit of the surfy, Tarantino sound track vibe. Good vocals, top notch all the way around.

Excellent combination of sounds - like Ed said, love the surf music touches. The way you've mixed this seems totally appropriate (and successful) for the song - simplification can often bring out different nuances.
Very enjoyable piece of work.

till I get started. Maybe the zen poem - coming out of minimal lyrics. I think I'll leave the timeline blues for you to tackle as your first posting with your new guitar.

Groovy &mdash 04/16/07 - 01:50:31 PM
Hey Bud - this is one groovy little mother. fantastic guitar and instrumentation, it just keeps movin' along with a great sense of rhythm. The vocals sound a bit more like Joy Division than the JAMC (god, I haven't played Psychocandy in ages), but I get what you mean - I like the panning on the vox - neat effect, without being tricksy.

Nice work, as per.

Steve

and thanks for taking the time to comment. You're right about the vocals. TJAMC were a great band - they may have had one trick - but I really liked it. Besides - how would we have gotten to My Bloody Valentine without them?

...really like the way the tune opens up after the first verse. Moves into a more current feel while it keeps the original theme/feel going.
Let's see...is it Blue Cheer I'm thinking of here? Not sure. Subtle shades of something I was really into...?
Nice, bud. Thanks for the moment(s).

I'm not sure - &mdash 04/17/07 - 08:12:25 AM
what that dark break sounds like. When I added a second guitar I played the wrong chord and the sound got twisted and in one of those aha moments I went with it. Actually - this piece was originally played in a different arrangement and one of the sections was a complete afterthought. I found myself treating what I played as loops and building the song from them. Thanks for stopping by - glad you enjoyed it.

Bud,
This has kind of a funky but more modern Brian Jonestown massacre type of psychedelic vibe to it. Nice drum groove and the bass is killer. I spent about 15 years on a Yamaha 4 Track and I know your pain....and bliss.

Reminded me of the Doors and the Stone Roses, and I mean that as a compliment! Very trippy. I like the off kilter chords the centre of the song, really drive it along.

I recently heard a Stone Roses tune and was surprised how trippy it was - I wasn't a fan - but I may have to reevalute my position. Any suggestions?

Controlled drive. Love the grinding riffs and infectious hooks. There's a lot of cool production things you did. Took some surprising turns. I like that.
