Description

this needs to be played really loud to experience all of the overtones.

I recorded this on my 4 track, and then bounced into the world of digi-tal. this is 7 minutes of psychedelia (backwards guitars, e-bow, feedback,..), and it has a few parts; so be warned if you don't like that sort of thing(but it's still pretty pop). There is a little synth on this, but it's the flute-ish sound, everything else is guitar. I love loud noisy guitar, but it's hard with a kid and neighbors.

posted this for 2 reasons:
1) I was inspired by Bud's latest post, and thought i'd rock my own Spacemen 3 love-fest.
2) I always have a hard time with distorted guitars: recording them so that they sound good and full, and then when mixing them, how to get them to not just turn into a wash. not that a wash is bad, but it seems like I have a hard time (unless I pan really hard). any tips would be appreciated. i haven't tried any of the GB amp models for guitars yet as I really like to be in the room with a screaming amp, the sound is so physical and it's like you're fighting to see who wins.

the "wash" works
Some good (or should I say "groovy") sounds on this and the "wash" sounds good. Others on this site may have better tips than I but one think you might try with the guitars is keeping them dryer with less reverb on them. Might give you the sound you want. You might also try to record them with a stereo pair of mics to get some of the room reflections to give some additional sonic interest. How have you been recording the distorted guitars?

basically I have just been plugging them into the amp, cranking it up and sticking a mic in front of it. it's usually fine with clean guitars, but the super fuzzy ones tend to get indistinct (from each other). I have also been recording "wet" as I like the sound of the effects boxes running through each other and the amp. i think the "less reverb" is a good idea. maybe if i add it after the fact so that i can control it while mixing.

	a little mayham never hurts no one. for distorted guitars try a high pass filter at around 270. may need to adjust to taste. it will take out alot of unwanted low end. Check out my latest song called November

hmmm
that's a good idea, which makes me think that i might actually try using the EQ once in awhile. I'm like a friggin' caveman; i tend to just plug everything in, turn it on and go. my only steadfast rule is to make sure that the delay is the last in the chain. thaks for the tips, thoughts, ideas, and most importantly your time.

That's it - I'm a fan - a big fan
Not just for the name check either - this one helluva great track. I hear a little Olivia Tremor Control in here too - but really it's your own vocal style as much as anything else that makes this such a good song - that and the ebow/mellotron sound. I'm a sucker for this kind of thing - but I've got standards too and this exceeds expectations. I think you did a fine job with the separation/detail on the tracks and captured the guitars really well. Give some of the GB guitar fx a try one of these days - you might like them - I often combine them with my pedals - and if no ones home I monitor through a Roland Cube 60 keyboard amp for the body punch. Excellent post.

i had to take a moment to listen
...after I saw the stylophone (i have one too, but I can't find batteries for it anywhere, so i have yet to actually play with it). I noticed your reference to Sigir Ros ("anyone want to try and finish this one"), and your statement of not knowing where to take the song, and something just felt very comfortable and familliar, so I listened to quite a few of your songs, and I must say I am quite impressed. Your tendancy/ability to just let a song grow and build without being concerned with traditional rock/pop strong structure is great, though something I find myself doing too freely now. I'm pretty new to the world of recording with software, and it's so much easier to work with that i can just sit back and create without doing take after take, but at the same time, I'm finding hard to find the right paths for the songs to go down. I carry them out and let them flow almost because i can, rather than because it's integral to the songs structure. Make sense?
Anyway, I really enjoy stuff, and I will definately come back to check out more.
Oh, and I wouldn't stress too much; the guitar sound is quite a desirable one.
