Description:
This is a song, started many years ago (during a dark time) that has gone through many incarnations before ending up as this. I'm never happy with it, so I've decided I'm never going to be. Inspired by a comment Amagi made about letting songs "leave the nest" (Thanks, dude!), I'm shoving this one out of the tree. Watch out below...
Lyrics:
Falling Angel
And so I fell, singing ‘Where’s the love,
If the Devil’s in your heart?’
And so I fell, singing ‘Where’s the love?’
What a way to fall apart
They say the clear blue sky is burning up
But all I feel is cold
They say your heart and soul is not enough
And all I feel is old
You think you’ve got it right but you’re not the only one
Who tried to see the stars and got blinded by the sun
You walk into the light ‘cos you’re too afraid to run
You’re just a falling angel and you’re gonna come undone
Well, there are demons all around me now
There are shadows at my feet
There are spiders crawling in the walls
There are killers in the street now
They say I should be getting sweeter, babe
But all I feel is wild
They say I should be getting wiser, babe,
But I feel like a child
And you can tell yourself that everything’s good
Yeah, you could sell yourself anything
You know you’re going to crack before the day breaks
And she turns up at your door
I hope that’s cheap champagne you’re throwing up
As you crawl across the floor now

Glad you got this out here - &mdash 04/16/07 - 09:12:07 PM
I really enjoyed it a lot - it's a darn good song. Great arrangement - simple but rich - and your vocals sound really good. Cool lead guitar towards the end. Congrats on moving on. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, Bud &mdash 04/17/07 - 06:43:51 AM
I appreciate your taking the time to stop by and listen (and comment!). The guitar work at the end went through many phases before ending up as it is now - one of the aspects of the song I kept changing - so I'm glad you like it. Thanks again for taking the time. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
an instant fave &mdash 04/16/07 - 10:42:15 PM
This is a rock ballad, but it is tinged with sadness. If i was drinking my beer, this song might bring a tear to my eye... I wanna listen to this again and again and squeeze as much emotion out of it. Your voice is soaked with pain... soothing to my ears but it cuts to the heart. [ Reply to This ]
Wow &mdash 04/17/07 - 06:49:19 AM
That's high praise indeed, especially if you think that the most important element of any song is the emotion (dare I call it soul?) it contains. I re-did the vocal many times, and even spent some time trying to achieve some kind of choral effect on the chorus. In the end, I went for something simpler - let the words speak for themselves. I'm glad you think it clicked. Thanks for taking the time to drop by and comment, I appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Good song! &mdash 04/18/07 - 10:51:54 PM
Vocals sound great, and your simple backing is really appropriate for this song - I suspect we all have some songs from our past that need to be "let go". I know I do :)
The harmonies work well, and I really enjoyed the guitar towards the end. Cool post!

Many thanks... &mdash 04/19/07 - 06:52:51 AM
Your comments about the harmonies are particularly welcome, since I am a fan of your singing. The arrangement and backing is pretty much "straight ahead", mostly because nothing else I tried (and i tried a few things!) quite worked. Glad you liked it. I appreciate your takming the time to stop by. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
nice song &mdash 04/20/07 - 06:53:03 AM
demons, shadows, and spiders. robert smith would like to say that at least once :) nice one, cheers [ Reply to This ]
Thanks baki &mdash 04/20/07 - 09:30:46 PM
I'm glad you liked the imagery, and thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. The Robert Smith reference takes me back to a time back in the 80s when I lived in London, and we went to a club that basically played The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and The Mission (?) all night. I don't think Falling Angel would have made the playlist, though! Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

Failed to leave my comment - or I lost it....
This is a nice song, well sung - the backup singing is great. The whole song has a nice mellow feel, while keeping the rock flowing.

Thanks, dude &mdash 04/21/07 - 02:16:03 PM
I've just been listening to your latest, and grooving! Thanks for the comments, especially about the backing vocals. I spent (wasted?) a lot of time trying to do lots of complicated things that were not working (Brian Wilson I ain't) and in the end I plumped for the straightforward approach. Glad you think it worked. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Hey! &mdash 04/21/07 - 06:42:57 PM
Thanks for directing me to this man! Great tune. I can't speak about any of it's older incarnations but you did well to unleash this version on us. It reeks of pathos and existential angst. Nice arrangement. Really nice vocals. Exceptionally good mix. Kudos friend!
Be well!

Thanks a million Amagi. I'm particularly grateful for your comment on the mix, since the songs of yours I've heard are extremely well mixed. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and comment. I appreciate it. [ Reply to This ]
Very cool crunchy guitar &mdash 04/21/07 - 08:57:55 PM
Pads... i really like the use of the spacial guitars on the choruses.. they were done just right.. not over done and placed well... good performance here... understated vocal... even a little resigned... It really framed the helpless feeling being portrayed [ Reply to This ]
Many thanks &mdash 04/21/07 - 09:49:53 PM
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I'm glad you like the guitars. Getting to something that simple was very complex! Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

Instant download! &mdash 04/27/07 - 09:51:18 PM
This has got a great pace; I too like the crunchy guitars on the "refrain" part. but the way the poetry is paced is what keeps me coming back to it, kind of like a story that each time I hear it tells me something more. The entire soundscape is well done, real pleasurable listen, so I can listen to it several times (as I have) . Thanks for another great one for the ipod. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Joe &mdash 04/28/07 - 12:20:08 AM
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you like the lyrics - I spent a long time fooling around with them - and I'm really happy you find the song worthy of multiple listens. Is there a greater compliment? Thanks, dude. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Great song, everything matches: The voice, the lyrics, the marvellous guitar.

The bird has flown..... &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:36:05 PM
I know what you mean about having a certain song that you just never feels comes into it's own fruition, but, I have to tell you, this one sounds like it's grown strong wings and is flying on its own.
I love the chorus. Some absolutely wondeful imagery. The whole song has such a smooth, bittersweet feel to it. It's an instant favorite. Downloaded and headed for my iPod. [ Reply to This ]

Very cool avatar. Is that a nice, shiny doorknob? [ Reply to This ]
Hey, man &mdash 05/12/07 - 09:38:33 AM
Thanks for taking the time, and delighted you like the song. The avatar is actually a photograph of a hotel corridor taken through the spyhole in the door (thus the distortion). Seemed like a good idea at the time! Thanks, man. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Great song &mdash 05/19/07 - 06:05:45 PM
...and I'm sure we've all got songs that we're never quite happy with. In any case this is excellent stuff! Good mix of guitars (especially the fuzzy sounding one on the chorus - nicely in the background - it's so easy for something like that to become over-powering. Like the very stereo lead towards the end (unusually I'm listening on headphones - most of my listening is in the car so that sort of effect would have been lost). Great vocal too! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Peter &mdash 05/20/07 - 01:27:50 PM
That sound on the chorus was a source of much fretting and experimentation, and a couple of people have commented that it works well in terms of level and tone, which makes me very happy! I agree - it's easy to overwhelm the mix with a distorted sound like that, and I found it hard to get it right. I'm glad you think it works. By the way, "Green Fingers" has become a favorite on my iPod. Thanks for sharing it, and thanks for taking the time to comment here. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Nicely done &mdash 06/10/07 - 07:56:17 AM

Glad you liked it, and thanks for going back and checking out this golden oldie. I wish there was a way to re-order songs so you could put ones you like nearer the top. Usually the older songs get lost in the mists of time! I appreciate your taking the time. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

I like the use of the distorted guitar in the chorus. Its a good contrast for the mellow sound. You are a good song writer. Your stuff could be done in a lot of different styles and it would really shine through. Nice song. I find that I can identify with your songs, I am sure others do to. That is the heart of an effective song writer. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, Stephen &mdash 01/13/08 - 09:53:00 PM
Glad you liked this one. The distorted guitar on the chorus is one of the things i like about this one too. I recently went back and remixed this one a bit, and that was one of the things I felt no need to tinker with. I was interested by your comment about other styles. I guess that's a sign of a strong song - that it can "survive" transposition to other genres, and i'm flattered that you this one fits into that category. Thanks for taking the time, dude. Peace.
