Description:
Is it just me or does this song sound like Bowie singing for Rush? Anyway, the chorus is ridiculously catchy, and a few rough edges aside it is not a bad little tune. I played rhythm guitar on this for a change, not too bad considering I haven't played guitar in forever. I think it took us about four hours to record this one and mixing was a breeze, but as always I'm open to suggestions.

Rich Huston (rhythm guitar, bass)
Chris Winters(drums, lyrics, lead and vocals)

The Core

Lyrics by Chris Winters
Music by Rich Huston and Chris Winters

You ask me just what is wrong, and
What you can do to make it right
Gnawing notions deep within you
Crawling up into the light

I say nothing if I can help it
I joke about the lack of sunlight
You can see the chinks in my armor
Reflections are no longer so bright

Don’t want to uncover what’s hidden down below
I think it’s another life that I’ve let go

I’m taking control of the words in my head
I’m taking back all the words that I said
I take it out on whoever’s closest
We’ll take it up again when we drop our poses

Please be careful with your questions
Words are sharper than a knife
Afraid they’ll pierce this fragile bubble
Let the air out of our lives

Bring to the surface what I’d buried long before
Don’t know what on earth is hidden at the core

Kind of 80s sound - very good lyrics, and a good all-round production. Not sure about Bowie, but there's something very distinctive about the vocal which I can't quite place. I really like the feel of the song - you've really nailed the style (wish I could put a name to it - maybe "penguish") :)

"Penguish" as a style is cracking me up. Well, we defiantly have a sound going on the productions Chris and I do without collaborators. We never really start out with a sound in mind, but we do have a definite 80's pop rock flair.

Really cool... &mdash 04/16/07 - 09:50:11 PM
Love the whole groove of this one... The bass line kicks! great tone on everything. The harmonies on the chorus brought me back to old Queensryche days (ahhhhhhhhh hair metal....)

Queensryche!!!! &mdash 04/16/07 - 11:09:56 PM
Now that is interesting. Thanks for the bass line kudos, I really just played the first thing that came to mind. We didn't spend a lot of time at all on the bass, and I still think the breakdown/solo section bass could be way better. But thanks for noticing.

As for the Queensryche reference. Nobody loved Queensryche more than me. Outside of Megadeth, there was no band I loved better as a kid. LOL, I wonder what Chris is going to make of that reference :)

Cut to the core &mdash 04/17/07 - 02:55:28 PM
Well Rich, I'm obviously not objective, but I really love this. I do get a lot of Bowie in Chris's vocals (which of course I like - kinda 70's, ziggy-era), and I really like this tune - it's a got a bit of a Blue Oyster Cult feel to me. Cracking bass and guitar playing, and really nice harmonies.

On the system I'm playing this on, the vocals sound a tad loud to me, but everything else sounds fine.

I really like the chorus to this - it's subtle, not too in-yer-face.

You're building up a great live set, guys, and a great band sound. I think you make a great songwriting team.

Thanks &mdash 04/17/07 - 06:37:19 PM
As always, thanks for the kind and thoughtful words. I can totally see the Blue Oyster Cult reference, has the same kinda of flow as "Reaper". Hopefully this weekend I'll lay some bass down on some of your tracks you sent.

You know, it does kind of remind me of Rush... there's some "Counterparts" and some "Permanent Waves" to the sound of the rocking. Nice singing... reminds me a little of Bowie, but Chris definitely has his own sound. Good work, guys.

guitars &mdash 04/19/07 - 08:32:33 AM
the guitars definitely have an Alex Liefson feel to them. I'm hearing the Rush influence. The chorus in particular has a Bowie sound... the verses not as much.
