Description:
CJ Daley of Hamlet Machines wrote the melody and Five Extra Arms destroyed it. This is my first collaboration with my most favorite band - Paris's very own Hamlet Machines. CJ sent me the music and I barely altered it at all. I added a tambourine, an occasional vibraslap, and changed the sound on one or two of his instruments only because I didn't have the same generator he used. The lyrics are inspired by my wife who is my greatest inspiration.

Lyrics:
WOKE UP IN A KNOT TODAY
TWISTED UP LIKE YESTERDAY
STARING OFF SO FAR AWAY
SO GLAD THAT YOU AND I CONNECTED

TANGLED UP IN YOUR CH-CHARMS
CHEWING OFF MY EXTRA ARMS
SETTING OFF THE CAR ALARMS
I NOTICED THAT WE WOKE THE NEIGHBORS

(MEXICAN - MEXICAN GIRL)

WOUND UP LIKE A RUBBER BAND
WOUNDED LIKE A ROBBER MAN
FEELING LIKE A MANIC CAN
CAN A MANNEQUIN FEEL WONDER

TRIED TO CRAWL ACROSS THE FLOOR
STUMBLED THROUGH YOUR BEDROOM DOOR
FOUND WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR
SO GLAD THAT YOU AND I CONNECTED

(MEXICAN - MEXICAN GIRL)

YOU'VE GOT YOUR HANDS ALL OVER ME
I'M ENDURING ECSTACY
MY PULSE IS RACING RAPIDLY
SO GLAD THAT YOU AND I CONNECTED

TRYING HARD TO BREATHE AGAIN
PLEASURE POURING FROM MY SKIN
BITE MARKS ON MY NECK AGAIN
WHAT A WAY TO START A WEEKEND

(MEXICAN - MEXICAN GIRL)

hmmm &mdash 04/18/07 - 12:11:48 AM
well, as a Mexican girl, I'm almost speechless.

Knowing it's inspired by your wife, I think it's sweet - in an "explicit" way. Not your typical ode to the wife, but flattering in its own special, non p.c. way.

Ignoring all lyrics, it's a great head bobbing hit. You and CJ have done a great job. Your voice - great, music - great. I like the hard sound and the rapid melody.

Mexican Girls Everywhere! &mdash 04/18/07 - 08:08:39 AM
My Mexican girl (pictured here) has inspired many a song from me - none of them are too typical or too p.c.

Jamaster CJ really gave me a lot to work with. It's such a bizarre riff - really odd timing. I liked it the second I heard it. It's funny to me how the vocals ended up fiting in there. I felt like the fast pace was the obvious approach, so I went with it. I didn't have a choice. It just happened. Know what I mean?

Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the comments Vic. It was a passionate weekend.

I think you told me once before I sounded like WOV. I appreciate the comparison. Devo is a compliment as well. I'm just glad CJ sent me some music to get me activated again.

Thanks for the kind words.

I tried to keep the subject matter racy, and close to the edge without going overboard. Somehow, this mix did come out pretty good. Must've been because of CJ. Historically I create horrible mixes that would never make it on the radio.

I'm going to check your stuff out. Thanks again.

CJ - Thanks for thinking of me when you sent this song over. It really did sound like it came out of my own head. The few things I did to make it mine were probably the most typical choices anyone would've made. I mean, hey, who doesn't like the Vibraslap every measure?

It was a pleasure hacking your fine work to bits. I hope my wife doesn't find out I put her picture here! Then I'll really be in trouble!

and the floor and the bed, and the speakers... this is a very kinkwerky song, intriguing rhythm, lyrics, and tied-up-chords... I like it! I guess that's why we use Macs, because we're so non-PC (as Estellie mentioned above.) The music conveys the kind of frenetic out-of-control impulsive adrenaline that the lyrics also intone... you both did really well here merging... uh, I mean you and CJ, not you and your wife (blush.) Chugging &mdash 04/18/07 - 01:15:18 PM
Firstly, LOVE the lyrics - really raw and honest and funny, Bob. This is a kinda odd track, but really catchy. I love how the instruments chug along, it gives the song a really nice groove, but also a dark intenstity.

It's hard but poppy at the same time - I really great twisted mixture (not unlike CJ and yourself). Nice mix generally, although the vocal maybe neds Eq'd a bit to make it a little brighter.

The nearest comparison I can think of is They Might be Giants - but really, this is a real original piece.

great stuff - please don't leave it so long to post another track!

Steve

P.S. What does yout katyraven think of this?!

Odd Track For A Strange Trainwreck &mdash 04/18/07 - 02:31:15 PM
Thanks for the comments Steve. I'm really glad you like the lyrics. It was a fun write for me.

The one synth that drives the whole song has such a weird rhythm to it. Something is just not right about it... That made it perfect for me! Bravo CJ. One of my vocal tracks (there are 3) was the very first attempt at singing to this unusual timing. I just jumped into it like I was gonna scrap whatever I did. Never thought I'd end up keeping it. Second vocal track was smarter... I took a deeper breath and only sang 4 stanzas breathed and sang 4 more. Third track I sang the alternate verses that I was breathing through in the second track. Wanted it to have this hurried feel to the singing, like the character - all out of breath. I should've given it the night off so I could listen with fresh ears in the morning. There are vocal parts that could be brightened indeed.

Katyraven is always flattered when I write songs about her, even though she likes a little less blippity - blip, but hey, not every woman is perfect. I love her for who she is and how she cooks and man, that woman can COOK! She deserves more songs from me, dontcha think?

I admire the bold and daring treatment you gave this song. It's a little unconventional... i believe you injected your personality in the song and it shows a flamboyant, rebellious side of yours. Although I am more in the mainstream path, I always admire songs that try to break the rules and still come out strangely pleasing and appealing.

Haha, excellent lyrics... "chewing off my extra arms", eh? It's cool that this was inspired by your wife. The theme of the song vaguely reminds me of Adrien Belew's tune "Momer", but the sound is somewhere southwest of Devo and around the corner from the B-52s. This is creative and fun, nice work, Bob!

Chewing Off My Extra Arms &mdash 04/18/07 - 03:02:04 PM
Glad you were able to laugh at my physical malformity (is that even a word or shall I use it for the theme of my next love song?). Seriously, I didn't want someone to use that phrase before me, and I'm sure the guy that was about to pen it for his love song is stomping his extra feet around in a rage. You snooze, you lose, Mr extra arm eater. Hahahah.

And did you go to Google Maps to find out where I live? - somewhere southwest of Devo and around the corner from the B-52s.

Thanks for the great compliments David.

Imagine the horror I experienced when CJ sent me this tune. He's a great songwriter and a great singer. Gotta love his style. I told him a dozen times already that I'll roadie his US Tour.

I'm glad you think my vocals do the song justice. He did all the hard work, all I did was go bananas with the Vibraslap, Tamborine and Egg Shakers like any other lover of Mexican Girls.

Messing around &mdash 05/01/07 - 02:35:38 PM
I like how you're becoming more assertive with your singing. I think it could still be punched-up more(maybe by double-tracking it?). Even though you don't have one of those silky-smooth dream voices, it sounds fine. You compensate for lack of tonal quality with a wonderfully idiosyncratic sense of phrasing and timing, which casts a cool atmosphere of cosmic humor to your productions.

Of course, some of that humor is straight upfront - like setting off the car alarms by chewing off your extra arms : >

I like your general approach to song writing of laying down a melody or groove and then embellishing it with a broad array of experimental sonics and quirky motifs. Each new piece becomes something not expected. It's readily apparent you are having fun messing around with GarageBand.

Not only do you possess an ear sharper than any human before you, but you have a classiness as well. Yes, it's true, my voice is quite limited in tonal quality, but my wife says I have the prettiest brown eyes she has ever seen!

Since you can't see my pretty brown eyes, I am relying on my wonderfully idiosyncratic sense of phrasing and timing, to cast a cool atmosphere of cosmic humor on my productions.

I am having fun messing around with GarageBand.

Mexican Girl &mdash 05/15/07 - 09:06:34 AM
Wow, this is a great song! It's no wonder I'm so filled with fury.

You see, it was 1991 and I wanted to surprise my blushing bride. We had just left our reception when I sprung the news on her that we wouldn't be going to a hotel, but we were going to drive staight to Mexico for our honeymoon. She wasn't in the mood to drive that far or to consumate our vows in a rest area, so she wasn't talking much during the 26 hour drive.

By the time I saw the Texas state line I new we were close. Then it finally happened. I saw a bumper sticker on a Gremlin that read "Brownsville, Tejas is beuno", or some thing like that. That's all the Spanish I needed to see to know we were in Mexico.

It's no wonder there's an illegal alien problem, we didn't go through a gate or anything to get to Mexico.

We got a room at a Best Western and the desk clerk, thank goodness, spoke fluent English. Sadly the rest of our Mexican Honeymoon wasn't as sexy as your song and I can't help but think you're song, had it been available, would have made the trip more memorable and saved my marriage...........Putz!!

A) Brownsville, Texas is about as close as you can get to Mexico without actually getting there.

Nice lesson on Mexico. Now Deanna Sue's comments about me being a geographical idiot make sense. I thought it was just the Boones Farm talking.

I do stay on subject, I may stray a little when the pain of my divorce creeps in.

I don't mean to be nasty, actually your songs are quite therapeutic. The problem stems from it being more of shock therapy. Your songs speak of what may have been had I been able to hold down a steady job and keep a clean credit rating.

You keep writing and I'll keep listening.

Bob,

Having heard a short blast in a recent film, it just reminded me that this is one of the best 5EA songs in the known cosmos.

It's great to have this blasting away in the car; an all consuming sound that just makes me nearly miss my exit due to singing and laughing at the "chewing off my extra arms" line!

Love the tune, the driving beat (no pun) and the vox/lyrics. I would STILL buy this one!
