FROM THE DESK OF BIBA_NOVA:

Phony Tony

by

Mystified, bibanova (with some help from The Leonids)

Ahhh...the mysterious path that creativity takes, sometimes.

I once wrote a song, a special song for a special someone in my life. Only thing is, I never got around to recording it...until I started to collaborate with Mystified that is.

As many of you may know, Mysti and I get into some weird, eclectic and experimental stuff sometimes. Other times we can be pop angels. This is a mixture of both. The song Phony Tony began to resurrect itself a few months ago...the song that I wrote for that special someone.

I recorded the rough melody as a guide vocal and sent it to Mysti. But not before I reversed the recording. My instructions to her were...DO NOT play this file correctly. I want you to learn how to sing it backwards and then I am going to reverse your backwards singing so it sounds like you singing the lyrics as they should be heard. It was an experiment. It was successful!!!! I was amazed that she could do this.

That was phase 1 and 2.

Phase 3 happened during early March when Mysti came to visit me and we recorded a bunch of material during our infamous 'Phoenix Sessions'. We added to the backwards-forwards vocals that we already had. However, I was having problems with the arrangement of the song over all.

Luckily help was on hand from Winston Smith of The Leonids. I was taken by the work he and Lucy had done with some 50's and 60's classics and their new song 'Remember When'. I asked for help and Winston enrolled Lucy in the project too and we came up with the goods.

So...here it is, 'Phony Tony'...a song that was born in 2002 and was only ever sung into someone's ear before this. The final stages of its journey into existence took place over the last few months...

Please enjoy....and feel free to sing along

Why, thank you, Steve :)
Glad you enjoyed this little ditty, which (as Bryn said) was months in the making!
It's great to share it here.

How fun! &mdash 04/19/07 - 10:01:09 AM
Gosh, this takes me back to 1982 - it's like a mixture of ABC and Madness, quite hooky and smooth, not to mention danceable! Here's my crit - too short! But actually, good pop is like that - leaves you wanting more and doesn't overstay its welcome. Brilliant job, you crew!

cute song &mdash 04/19/07 - 10:36:40 AM
love this. slightly warped in all the right ways, but catchy as f&*@k. love it. like the harmonies best on "it's a crazy kind of world."

don't know if you noticed it, but there is a bit of your voice starting to say something at the very end of the song. you might have left it there on purpose (i would have), but some folks are crazy about stuff like that.

Very clever everyone.... &mdash 04/19/07 - 01:07:40 PM
This, to me, is one of the few tunes on MJ's that I will remember after a day or so. It's simple and catchy and clever and very well done.

Excellent work all around.

Paul.

...I found myself humming this tune quite a bit as well, in the midst of working on it.
I'm so glad Bryn invited me to collaborate (thanks, B! :) )

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment!

...sonic taste treat... &mdash 04/19/07 - 02:11:12 PM
I like the jaunty feel of this tune...
The backwards, forwards thing is really interesting, but I'm not quite sure what it has to do with the tune conceptually - could you elaborate?
You both meld very well and are continually coming up with unique and interesting sonic taste treats.
My only complaint is that it repeats a few to many times for me at the end. For me shorter is better, but I seem to be in the minority when it comes to length of tunes.

Thank you... it IS very jaunty now I come to think of it.

Yes. The backwards-forwards thing has absolutely nothing to do with the song conceptually. It was an experiment that I wanted to try for ages and when I sent the original vocal file to Mysti (almost as a test just to see if it would work) I had not even got a backing track assembled at that time. When she sent her file back to me and I discovered that indeed it DID work, I decided not to let all that hard work go to waste. We plan to to use the backward- forward singing technique in future compositions -perhaps dropping it into a piece of music for greater dramatic and sonic effect. The sky is the limit basically...

You both meld very well and are continually coming up with unique and interesting sonic taste treats.

Thank you. I agree. Our collaboration has produced some great stuff.

My only complaint is that it repeats a few to many times for me at the end. For me shorter is better, but I seem to be in the minority when it comes to length of tunes.

I think you may be right. I agree with you general thought on that point. I think I might try and edit one verse out of it to see what it does to the song...

Stuck in my head &mdash 04/19/07 - 09:42:49 PM
Stuck in my head in a good way. Catchy and tuneful. It has humor and musicality, nice harmonies (I love the backwards/forwards singing) and a great sound - very nicely produced. Sweet.

I love this! &mdash 04/20/07 - 09:31:26 AM
happy, light and fun. The simplicity of lyrics with the layered harmonies just allow me to float along and listen. The harmonies remind me of a choral part in a song in the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. I should try and find out what that was. Kudos to all.
