Description:
This is our first collaboration we are posting as The Skank Brothers That's Jim from Scotland - The Infinites and Bob from Five Extra Arms.
Jim says - Thank God for Macs, Macjams, but not Big Macs...
How else could we do this? Telepathy? Carrier pigeon? Smoke signals?
None of the above - it was a shared love of all things lovely.
We like our tunes. Hope you do!

Lyrics:
WHEN I SAW YOU THEREAND I HEARD YOU SPEAK
AND I SAW YOUR HAIR
THEN I THOUGHT WE SHOULD MEET
SO I MOVED TO YOU
AND I SAID SOME THINGS
AND YOU SHOWED YOUR SMILE
AND I FELT SOMETHING
UNDER THE STARRY SKY
AWAY FROM EVERYONE
WE TALKED A LITTLE WHILE
WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE SUN
UNDER THE STARRY SKY
AWAY FROM EVERYONE
WE KISSED A LITTLE WHILE
WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE SON
YOUR CRIMSON LIPS SO FULL
I WATCH THEM KISS THE GLASS
DRAINING MY VERY SOUL
AND FORGETTING MY DARK PAST
UNDER THE STARRY SKY
AWAY FROM EVERYONE
WE TALKED A LITTLE WHILE
WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE SUN
SITTING SO CLOSE TO ME
AS IF WE SHARED A CHAIR
DIDN'T OCCUR TO ME
IF ANYONE WAS EVEN THERE
WHEN I SAW YOU THERE
AND I HEARD YOU SPEAK
AND I SAW YOUR HAIR
THEN I THOUGHT WE SHOULD MEET
SO I MOVED TO YOU
AND I SAID SOME THINGS
AND YOU SHOWED YOUR SMILE
AND I FELT SOMETHING
UNDER THE STARRY SKY
AWAY FROM EVERYONE
WE TALKED A LITTLE WHILE
WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE SUN
UNDER THE STARRY SKY
AWAY FROM EVERYONE
WE KISSED A LITTLE WHILE
WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR THE SON

Hey Tom,
Glad we could give you a lift. Imagine my reaction when Jim emailed me the music to this song and asked if I wanted to work on it with him? How could I resist? Jim is a true rockstar in my book.
I'm really happy with the the way our first song turned out. We learned tons of info from the forums and our fellow MJers as to the way to do this once foreign idea of an online collaboration. It couldn't have and wouldn't have happened any other way. Thanks Mac Jams!

The Infinites
Bob & I have been throwing sounds at each other for a couple of months and it's time we thought you heard the fruits of our labor.
Bob's vox is the ideal mix of gutsy-ness (made up word?!) accent and force. Couldn't be happier that he sang it (falsetto is me sitting on a cactus...)
More to come...
Jim

I was wondering how you hit that note! Cactus, eh?

perceptualvortex
Interesting mix, nice writing and production. I only wish the guitar was louder. I enjoyed the vocals and the rolling groove.
five_extra_arms
Hey Perceptualvortex,
was your mother always telling you to turn down the stereo when you were a kid? Thanks for the comments. Jim gave this song that really rolling groove and did all the mixing and production. I just watched in amazement.

Thanks for the compliments Mike. Glad to know you are humming our song. Makes me very happy.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of this , and I love it. the guitar reminds me fondly of the Bunnymen, and the vocal has touches of 'Walking on the Sun'. Bob - this is my fav of all the vocals you've done, really catchy and confident.
great guitar work all round ... this is a perfect summertrack - great structure as well. Drums sound a little muted - could maybe be notched up a little but hey, that's just a quibble ... this sounds like it's gonna be a great summer - really nice stuff guys.
Steve
five_extra_arms
Hey Steve,
the guitar also reminds me of the Bunnymen. Had an interesting sound when combined with the banjos. The bassline sounds so close to Gary Numan's 'Are Friends Electric' that I was worried I'd start to sing it by accident. The meaty bassline in the choras break is one of my most favorite parts - that and the part where the Edge came over to Jim's Studio and laid down a single note lead....
Thanks for all your help you gave me on my parts of this song. I could almost add your name to the credits!

cjdaley
from your other stuff. Reminds me of something I can't quite pin down. There's a nice groove to the guitar and the two voices blend very well.
five_extra_arms
Thanks for the comments CJ. Since the music Jim created was so different from what I'm used to, I thought I'd try a different vocal approach to this song and the next ones you might hear sooner than you think. I sang a couple of harmonizing tracks in an attempt to thicken my voice a bit, rather than through effects. Jim mixed it so I'm not sure if he followed my mixing tradition which has always been - one vocal in the middle, one vocal to the left, one vocal to the right. Clever, I know. Innovative, indeed. Daring.... I could go on, but I won't.
Thanks man.

Cool vibe groovin and boopin. Reminds me alittle bit OF smash mouth. Realy great. Catchy catchy coolness.
five_extra_arms
From the coolest of coolness, we appreciate the comment. I'm still all over the room when I hear this groove.

Alannah
... I like the lyrics .... is that two different voices? wow they work well together .. I thought it was one voice ... multiple tracks ... see when a collab is meant to be ... works well.
five_extra_arms
Alannah,
Thanks for the comments. Jim will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's 2 or 3 tracks of my vocals and several spots throughout where Jim yelped and hollered for effect! However he did it, he mixed it all down to tightly (In my humble opinion) and made it sound like a thicker, richer voice than I was born with.
The lyrics were kinda floating in my head until I heard his musical ideas for this song and then the lyrics just seemed to fall right into place.
I think Jim and I do work well together, thanks for the vote of confidence.

Great feedback on our first (of many)!
Nice feeling to hear from these luminaries!

Pirate Man
Expetional Production. All the tracks were very well blended together. It seems like this would be an excellent live song, you should try to get that great of an effect live!
five_extra_arms
There might be a live performance in NYC this weekend if Jim's banjo doesn't get held up in customs.
Thanks pirate!

like what you did on the vocals. And also love the guitar(sound)...real? outstanding lyrics. One request more bass.

Hey Lava - you have some really great songs that I just spent the morning listening to. Thanks for commenting here, otherwise I might've missed you.
The bassline on this song is so dark and dirty that you might think it's a guitar, but I personally think there's never too much bass.
Thanks for dropping in.

Listening at home, rather than work, I have realized that the bass was fine.
Sorry.

Cool, guys! This reminds me of early Midnight Oil - stark, dusty, perpetual motion rock. Love the lyrics, they're highly evocative and split off nicely into various interpretations. Would love to hear the bass, guitar and drums come up to meet the level of the vocals and really put the punch in this track. It's very catchy, good danceable rock, too. Great job!
The Infinites
Any level issues are all fixable. Bob and I are looking to do a live session somewhere arond the MPD in NYC this weekend or next....bring your ears and beer money in case we all bump into each other.
But only if my banjo doesn't get confiscated!!! Ha ha... ! ! !
Bob - you're a riot!
Jim

Thanks for the advise Bing.
I'm glad you took the time to help us out with this. I think it's a good danceable tune as well. I can hear the Midnight Oil now that you've mentioned it.

guitapick
...an underlying power to it that just keeps growing through the tune. I like the way the guitar builds, very gradually, to the end when it becomes stronger and more apparent. Nice, subtle touch.
The lyrics are great. "Waiting for the son"...
Real fine tune, man...my first of yours...
five_extra_arms
Hey guitapick,
thanks for the useful feedback. Jim is the sound machine on this fine tune of ours. He built this thing so beautifully that I was almost (but not really) scared to mess with it. We had a blast shoving the band files back and forth. His first version was a lot faster, like, 180 bpm. Then I slowed it down to about 120 bpm just so I could attempt to sing it and BREATH! He took it back up to about 140 bpm and on and on and on.
He won the battle, and what you hear is the result of his final artistic decisions. When it came back to me for the last time, my reaction was an echoing "YES!" that probably frightened the dogs.
I'm glad you took the time to listen.

Just plain good music. Love the way its sung. With that twanging guitar in the background! Superb!
five_extra_arms
Thanks ego. I love what Jim did with the guitars as well. It is really well orchestrated with that meaty bassline. Made it a breeze to sing over.

Lovely retro yet contemporary feel to this. Great work on the vocals and that guitar is stand out. A touch light on the drums and bass maybe but it might be the speakers I'm listening on.
Good collab guys.
Cheers

If you think this one sounds like the B52's, wait til you hear our next collab - Black House Dakota. I think Jim's has a few final touches on the mix (he's got the mixing touch) and then we plan on posting it.
This song really is pretty cool. Thanks!

Why are all your songs "explicit"?
Willie
five_extra_arms
Couldn't that be considered explicit?
I am so edgy, I just like to think everything I do is explicit. But hey, why am I explaining this to you?
LOL!
I love the Skank Brothers! They ROCK OUT in their Pink Dresses!

Peter Bauckham
are always refreshingly interesting! Love the mixing on this - great guitar sounds and brilliant vocals. Perhaps it's all a little bit murky sounding - maybe it could be punched up a bit through mastering... Anyway - it's fabulous as it is. All the best, Peter.
five_extra_arms
When Jim and I take the time to collaborate, we usually end up with a pretty good song. I've been out of touch this last couple of months, so, I miss working on songs with him.
I'm trying to fix that. It's hard when you only have five extra arms. Six would be so much more balanced, wouldn't you agree?
Thanks always for your input.
