Keywords:
epic (36)long-winded (1)indie rock (28)de-tuned guitars (1)quiet-loud-quiet (1)formulaic indie but i meant it so sue me (1)heavy (138)I'm sure that everytime i got my heart broke it was my own fault (2)
Description:
Another of the songs done on my friends pro tools set-up. This is a long, guitar heavy song that builds all the way through. But be warned, it's 8:05. I really don't feel like I could have done what I wanted in less time. I think it seems shorter than that, but I wrote it. I could listen to it all night :) I listed it as Emo, but i would just call it Indie Guitar Rock. One of the heavier songs you'll hear out of me, but still melodic with harmonies and such.

This is a song about a girl I treated really well, who expected so much from me it was crazy. Amazing how insecure some people can be (including myself for dating her in the first place). Her best friends name was Caroline, so it's basically saying that Caroline knows I treated her well.

That and the obvious Beach Boys pun.

Hardware:
mac G3, gretsch drums, fender jazz bass, ampeg bass combo, fender tele, fender twin, old gretsch amp, danelectro FabTone (their crappy over-saturated distortion pedal that I like for some reason), Marshall Guv'nor pedal (for bass distortion), Sm57 mics, cheap condenser mic for vocals, cheap rack mount delay/reverb for vocals (can't remember the name, but it was affordable)

Software:
pro-tools

Great &mdash 04/22/07 - 10:30:15 PM
Love the guitar work all the way though - heavy without overwhelming the melody. Great vocal performance, too - in the sense that broken-hearted equals great. Great pathos, with an edge. The "Caroline knows" refrain is terrific the way it emerges from that rough guitar build-up. Nice swooping harmonies in that middle eight section. And when that "I'm okay, I'm alright, I'm alive" comes in, well, it's stirring stuff. Outstanding. This is excellent. Downloaded. Nice work.

thanks for listening &mdash 05/02/07 - 04:53:08 PM
i'm glad you liked it. yeah, I pretty much hate the emo tag, but it seemed the best bet at the time. i really have a hard time with genres.

I listened to all eight minutes and didn't get an itchy trigger finger. That is an accomplishment. Your tunes are excellent. They are "alternative" and cool yet have a commercial appeal also. Heart felt vocals and real good melodies. Good stuff. Regards

great song good production ! Pro tools is a good program . I still prefer Logic because im bias :) But my friend has a couple hundred thousand dollar studio with PT and it does some good stuff . love your voice and general feel of the song ...I think the length has no effect I listened to it twice in a row and went back for thirds ...good stuff. Downloaded thanx for the new music.

What a great track! Kinda has that grungy alternative sound, almost nirvana-ish. Which in my mind is a really good thing. Definitely original, well produced, awesomely written, incredible performance. Downloaded. I hope to hear you on the radio sometime instead of the crap they seem to play nowadays.

Keep em coming!!!

Another reposter. &mdash 01/24/08 - 07:36:00 PM
Actually you could repost all your songs to put us to shame. After some thought, I think one reason, for what it's worth, you're unknown in the mainstream is because you don't have visuals/video to go along with your music. That seems to be the musical crime of our age - no visuals, no talent. Really pathetic.

Caroline Knows &mdash 04/16/08 - 02:27:34 AM
I'm pretty sure this is my favorite thing you've done so far. I really connect with this one for some reason. Maybe cause I have a similar (but not nearly as good) song called Amanda that builds in a similar fashion? Anyway, really really well written song with great lyrics - love the 'caroline knows' concept, the bridge and of course the amazing refrain. This will be in heavy rotation over the next few days. Thanks.

Killer! &mdash 05/09/08 - 02:17:11 PM
Here, I must agree with rsorensen about "I'm pretty sure this is my favorite thing you've done so far" (as a full song). This is epic Mikey, great music work and fine vocal delivery. Great job bro. KUDOS!

Grunge. &mdash 08/26/08 - 09:33:20 PM
I actually like it. Kinda repetitive, but what music isn't. I just wish I could have understood the words.

But for real. It was solid.

Glad I listened to the original &mdash 09/01/08 - 10:51:29 AM
Dave Maguire suggested I do before listening to his MJCC version of it. Now either way, I'm glad I did. This is a great song Michael all the way through. Excellent recording with a stellar mix. Love the drum work and the guitars are to die for. You vocal rings true to the theme without being maudlin and the message is one I can relate to on a personal level.

Great track my friend, simple great.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

wow &mdash 09/03/08 - 11:33:02 PM
This is great. It reminds me a little of all the Smashing Pumpkins stuff I used to listen to. Long slow build and just keeps going. Seemed like a short 8 minutes to me.

Sad &mdash 09/05/08 - 12:08:32 AM
Sad that I missed this gem when it was first posted. I could have been listening to it for over a year. Brought here by dajama's MJCovers version. man, what can I say that hasn't been said. The 8 minutes flies by, not an obstacle, it just builds in such a honest and convincing way. Thanks.

emo :*( &mdash 11/09/08 - 11:29:44 AM
back to tell you to put this song in indie rock where it belongs. emo is such a trite tag for this masterpiece! ALSO, I read above that you have a version with distorted keyboards? Lay it on me!
