Description:
This song was written back in 2000 as I watched President Willie give The State of the Union address. It's only gotten better since then.
Lyrics:
The State of the Union
(Chorus)
It’s hard to be the guy
in charge of the State of the Union
It’s hard to be the guy
who’s the boss of the world.
It’s hard to be someone
whose life is made of illusion
It’s hard to be the guy
who’s the King of the World
When I was just a boy
I went away to summer camp
And there I learned that
I had been annoited by God’s own hand
From God to me, Now me to you
It’s time you learned this simple truth.
Chorus
When I was just a teen
I went away and I met the President
He looked me in the eye and shook my hand
And then I knew I was meant
To be the man, the man for you
It’s time you learned this simple truth.
Chorus
And as I’ve made my way
from scamp to tramp
I’ve done all that I could
I’ve passed the buck,
I’ve never ducked
A chance to make myself look good.
It's known to me, It’s known to you
It’s good you learned this simple truth.

Flag Waving Time!!! &mdash 04/26/07 - 09:11:43 PM
It's time to put on your blue stained dress, your high heel combat boots and leopard skin pill box cowboy hat for a romp and a march around the living room. Leave no stone unturned as you make war, not love. [ Reply to This ]
Nice! &mdash 04/27/07 - 10:43:51 AM
Catchy as hell, very nice light touch. It would've been easy to go with bitterness and bile, but your ironic treatment here works well here without copping out. It's a tune that could very well be humming around inside ol' George Dubya's head right now. Nice mix and great spirit in your performance! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks D-Man &mdash 04/27/07 - 11:17:12 AM
Thanks for the nice comments. I had originally written this as more of a lament and much slower. My wife suggested the increase in tempo and being a dutiful husband I increased the tempo.

Thanks for the comments Vic, always good to hear from you. Haven't heard the new Springsteen album, but thanks for the reference.
Be sure to wear your Doc Martins if you do any foot stompin.'

Nice &mdash 05/14/07 - 07:06:53 AM
Head-bopping, foot-tapping track with clever lyrics and nicely performed. Good vocal performance - I especially like the harmonies. Do I hear something that sounds like bagpipes? Very cool. Nice work. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Bagpipes &mdash 05/15/07 - 08:23:13 PM
You are correct, those are bagpipes, at least bagpipes from a Roland JW-50 in the background.
Thanks so much for listening and commenting.

well written &mdash 02/18/08 - 08:09:20 AM
Good meaty sound. I think that this song is your best that I've heard up to now. Excellent piece that's well written with good form. What I like about your songs is that you have taken care and time with them and it does show.

Thanks, Woofer, for coming by and listening. I thought this might be a companion piece for your song about Bonnie Prince Charles.
Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

cool perspective &mdash 04/02/08 - 01:54:12 PM
I love the perspective of the lyrics. That picture of Willie and JFK freaks me out so I'm glad you found a cool way to reference it. It's almost as if these people start politic-ing for the job from the time they're 8. One criticism would be the drums. I think the song would be stronger without them in a folk-rock kind of way. All in all, cool tune! [ Reply to This ]

Some political careers do start early and unfortunately, some do not end as quickly, but when you've been chosen by God to lead, then by God you lead.
