Description:
this is hard to describe: suffice to say that i played the melody by bowing the strings of a guitar with a metal slide. i think it's pretty. the lame title comes from the bass being played on a guitar tuned down.

everything on here is a real instrument that's been manipulated to some degree. i recorded parts of it on the four track, then added some more tracks (the synths). wasn't sure which genre to post to (you tell me).

Hardware:
tascam 4 track, radio shack brand cassette tape, my faithful intel mac mini, metal guitar slide, dod digital delay pedal, fender tele (for the melody and the bass part), old solid state alamo practice amp, fender rhodes, roland jx3p, some bongo's i got at a thrift store, a floor tom that was left in my basement when we moved in, i also tapped out a rhythm on the guitar strings with a miniature flashlight that's laying around the house.

Software:

can't explain it either &mdash 04/28/07 - 12:13:59 AM
...but i like it. i've got a old pitted slide that i use as a bowing effect. if your in tune with a song it is really cool. really like this little number.

thanks tobin &mdash 04/28/07 - 10:46:25 AM
for listening. try taking your guitar, tuning it to an open tuning, put on some delay, and bow that thing like there's no tomorrow. since you got the open tuning, all you have to do is bow over where you would normally put your fingers. it's such a huge pleasing sound to me. i actually probably make too much use of this device. thanks for listening.

I would have never known &mdash 04/28/07 - 09:47:20 AM
I would have never known about the bass. If you wouldnt have said anything..sounds like bass to me! Have you ever tried an ebow?
I think the slide guitar was very nice!!!

ebow? &mdash 04/28/07 - 10:41:06 AM
love the ebow. it's an amazing thing: on an electric with slide, on accoustic, on a distorted bass. i actually use it a lot on this song:

thanks for listening (and commenting)

isn't a genre &mdash 04/28/07 - 09:57:46 AM
called "other?". beacuse this is very "other". There's a crying-like quality to the guitar that reminds me of the melancholy post-rock of Godspeed you black emperor ! or a silver Mount Zion. the bass has a nice pulse to it, that sounds me bassy enough.

ooh nice references &mdash 04/28/07 - 10:38:01 AM
i love both of those bands. mt. zion has some really haunting pieces. i like a lot of the post-rock stuff. this genre thing always has me confused.

that's very nice of you to say, and I like your description better than mine.

creative &mdash 04/28/07 - 02:20:43 PM
as all h*ll. Pure dreamy ambience. Love the head, and the fact that you used some unconventional approach's to creating the tracks makes it all the more hipster.

thank you &mdash 04/28/07 - 06:44:14 PM
i'm glad you like. this was one of those songs where i just turned on the machines and recorded for a couple of hours until it was time to return to real life. maybe i should change the genre to ambient then?

This is a very good start... &mdash 05/01/07 - 02:05:28 AM
It sounds very unfinished with no vocals or a true drum/timing track....but what you have so far I like very much! It sounds very Planet of the Apes to me...You've created a strange atmosphere, that tantilizes/teeders on hope and disaster...I like this very much.

wow &mdash 05/01/07 - 11:38:53 AM
planet of the apes, i like that description. actually i just watched it the other night (the original).

it's pretty much finished, as it's just supposed to be a seque into the next song whenever (if) I get around to putting this stuff out. thanks so much for listening.

you &mdash 01/16/08 - 01:13:59 PM
have something that will work. it's basically just rubbing a piece of metal over the strings instead of fingering your melody. if you want to play an A, just rub the metal over the 5th fret of the E string, etc... don't know how i figured that out, but i do like the effect. thanks so much for listening to this old chestnut.
