Keywords:
coffee (20)god (191)chat (1)crazy (66)share (3)love (983)alt country (5)
Description:
Another collab from BudWill Industries. More Alt Country than Alt Rock. Will's lyrics have been hangin' around for a while waitin' for me to channel John Prine, or Steve Earle, or X, or The Blasters. Well this was the weekend. I just got back from Phoenix and still had some desert dust on my boots - so grab yer partner and kick it.

Lyrics:
God stopped by the other day
to see how we were doin'
he closed his eyes and shook his head
at all the wrack and ruin
so I made a pot of coffee
I took his coat and hat
we sat at the kitchen table
had a little chat

He said

Being everywhere all the time
isn't very easy
the universe is awfully big
drives me kinda crazy
but I like this little planet
this one that you call earth
I like your funny stories
like the one about the virgin birth

but it gets so damn confusing
you call me by so many names
you get so high and mighty
you make outrageous claims
each group pretends to know me
my motives and my aims
you get all hot bothered
play your tragic games

He took a sip of coffee
sat back in his chair
I saw the questions on his face
the pain and worry there

Then he said

I got this business started
three billion years ago
then I kinda let it happen
to see where it would go
I had a few ideas
I sorta had a plan
but in the end I though I'd
leave it up to man

Right now I'm disappointed
by the misery I see
I think you've made some progress
but your less than you can be
and it's clear your biggest problem
is how you think of me

to make the world a better place
all you have to do
is fill your heart with peace and love
like my heart's filled for you

take your love and share it
with everyone you see
take your love and live it
that's how you honor me

He thanked me for the coffee
he headed for the door
I had a million questions
I wanted to hear more
but just as I began to speak
I realized he was gone
and all my million questions
were answered by this song

Funny and deep all at the same time.

"It's clear your biggest problem is how you think of me," is just a classic line.

I started your song playing and went back to browsing at Guitar Center. I'd also had eMusic open and was going to listen to some stuff there and I got confused because your song grabbed my attention and I thought, "who are these guys?" and clicked on the eMusic tab to find out...

But it was YOU!

You guys are the real deal I really love this one. It reminds me a bit of M.Ward's Chinese Translation, which if you haven't heard, I think you guys would love.

...for checking out our songs. I write the lyrics on the west coast and Bud writes the music on the east. Macjams does the rest.

God and Coffee &mdash 04/28/07 - 08:22:11 PM
I always wanted to know how he takes it,...black or with sugar, cream? If he's a half-caf soy latte man, we are all f*cked.

Sweepingly poinant, light, flippant, fun and bouncy, all at once. The drums seem to drag the beat somewhere in the loop during the change, which is a little distracting, but it also adds a roadhouse, less than perfect charm.

Still &mdash 04/28/07 - 11:56:30 PM
learning how to use this. Takes it black with a finger of I.W. Harper (had to bring his own). Like Bud, it's one song at a time.

I like to think of "less than perfect charm" as my specialty. It comes right after "honest effort" and "well intentioned". Your right about the drag though. Oh well - like I heard it said - "Jack, as fas I can see mistakes are only horses in disguise - ain't no need to ride em ever - 'cause we could not ride them different if we tried" - Guy Clark.

Balls... &mdash 04/28/07 - 08:39:39 PM
...i missed out being first this time! nice twist of style here. dug those guitars. the rythm loose and free and the lead headin' into town to face the highplains drifter.

Will did a nice twist with the "talk to god" conversation.

2 questions: Was god wearing spurs and chaps and did he use sweet 'n low in his coffee?
those are just more eternal questions that always on my mind. Fun piece guys!

I'm diggin all the euphamismss here tonoght - &mdash 04/29/07 - 12:03:33 AM
Loose and free rhythm - less tha perfect charm - damn this one warm and fuzzy place. Glad you liked it Vic. Personally - I've never seen God - but I imagine he's wearin a white three piece like Travolta in Saturday Night Fever - or Barry White - for that matter - but not like Andy Gibb.

By coincidence... &mdash 04/28/07 - 09:42:03 PM
I'm working on a couple of things concerning God...

Love the rockabilly guitars with the different electric sounds left and right... The vocal suits the sound down to the ground... What with Elvis and Johnny Cash being gone and all... I like the brushes on the snare...

Lovely wry humor to this one... Lyrically well done...

I like the vocal sound you're getting, recording-wise...

You kinda manage to get retro and contemporary, all in one go...

Ed

I want a tambourine in there somewhere. Am I crazy?

Bet someone could do some cool harmonica on this, too...

But these are just random, floating ideas... This is pretty darn tight just as is....

Hey Ed - it sounds like you and God &mdash 04/29/07 - 12:08:19 AM
have got a thing happenin'. Thanks for the supportive comments. Harmonica and tambourine sound like a great idea. Will plays a mean harmonica - but he's not hooked up to record yet. Now here's the impetus. Thanks.

the Blasters and the return of Robert Gordon. This is a Jolly Chefs era number. Another great reading of my lyrics. Really dig the guitars and drums. By the way: takes it black with a finger of I.W. Harper, wears a pork pie hat.

Why can't we all get along, and make music like this? &mdash 04/29/07 - 09:27:40 AM
Cool song, and I like the message.

Now hold on while a make a caffeine offering at the shrine of my favourite deity...

...for the lyrics compliment. Bud does a great job of making my words work. I had John Prine in mind when I wrote this one, but Bud took it to another level with the rockabilly sound.

I liked the country feel; disarming, you need to do that when talking about God. If you ever need a harmonica Give me a holler.

You wanna take a pass at this one? Feel free and I'll do a remix. Maybe add that tambourine too.

...great, great, great!

Starts out a really smokin' truck drivin' man guitar. Moves into some serious lyrics.

Great! Kudos, guy. Love that guitar. Serious production.

Thanks guys - &mdash 05/01/07 - 01:24:55 PM
For all the positive support. These tunes with my brother a real kick for me. I don't really plan out the tracks to the lyrics - I just get started and let the music go - and then pick a set of lyrics that seem right. The result forces me into different phrasing and expression than I might have come to otherwise.
Glad it seems to have worked this time.

Love this stuff! &mdash 05/01/07 - 08:03:50 PM
Great lyrics and a really good performance - especially vox and guitars. My personal preference would be to have a different bass sound and for it to be played more traditionally (ie on the beat, 4 to the bar, with the odd grace note for interest) - I guess I listen to bass a lot and grew up playing this stuff for a few years, and the bass line just seems to take away the roll in this (it's also a bit on the soft side - maybe that's the problem?). The rockabilly tone on the guitar sounds great.
If you decide to do a remix, I'd love to have a crack at the bass ;)
Neil

Send me your email and I'll send you a Cuppa minus bass mp3. I'd love to hear what you come up with. Joe Brady is taking a crack at Harmonica. Should be real interesting to put two new track in at once. I Ching!

...to everyone for the great response to the lyrics. My part's easy. Bud does all the hard work, but it's cool being part of the team. Can't wait to here the new bass and the harp.

Love the "Live Sound" &mdash 05/02/07 - 07:08:49 AM
Really enjoyed this one. Sounds like The Pixies going country. Outstanding lyrics. Look forward to hearing more from you. We're you going for a live sound?

I wasn't necessarily going for a live sound. My time is tight so I tend to work fast - hence loose. I did the music in a few hours one night and the vocals the next morning. I double tracked the vocals and slipped one slightly out of time to get a different room feel.

desert dust &mdash 05/02/07 - 02:49:12 PM
This sounds so professional, with that little edge of charming sloppyness (and i mean this in the best way) to make the song really alive. These lyrics tell a story, and that's how it should be. A very fine brother-to-brother collab. And i can lively feel that desert dust in your boots:-) Much enjoyed.

Care & Feeding &mdash 05/22/07 - 08:21:26 AM
Nice that you gave God a cuppa coffee. Nice that you wrote a little ditty 'bout it. Awesome that it's such a groovy little tune. It was sad at the end when he left... Keep askin' those questions though. I'm a-gonna.

Also, I like the sound of a danelectro, them things is cool! I second Mr. Jiguma re: bringin' up the bass in the mix. Whether you get a track from him or not, this thing needs that little bit of added oomph, papa.

like some coffee?
Will did a great job on the lyrics. I got my Danelectro for $125 at my local muisc store on consignment - I love it.
There's a remix of this tune with Jiguma's bass and Joe Brady's harmonica. I'd appreciate your feedback. Ed thought the bass was too low - but it sounds good here - what's your opinion?
