Keywords:
new wave (20)prom ballad (2)80's (27)electropop (33)pop (482)alternative (247)back in the day i loved girls with dyed black hair (1) ()
Description:
This is my attempt at an 80's prom ballad that you might have seen in a John Hughes movie. This is supposed to be the one the girls with the big hair slow danced to. Think ABC, OMD, etc... (all those bands that I hated at the time, but have developed a respect for). This was all done on my trusty JX3P (except the drums).

Lyrics:
i just kind of made them up as I went along, so I'd be embarassed to actually write them out.

Hardware:
zoom 8 track, mac mini intel, sm57 mic, roland JX3P

Software:
audacity

Excellent. A sense of delight, romance, and movement, more like a 1932 prom than a 1980, but all the better for it. Is the piano sound from you Roland? Perfect.

Oops &mdash 05/01/07 - 08:53:40 AM
Sorry about that, but I thought I was writing on Paul Page's latest piano post, Promenade. Dang. That's what I get for multi-tasking in multiple browsers. What I wanted to say about your (again) fine song:

Your recordings are so clean and streamlined, employing sonic symbolism and a sense of modern archetypes that catch currents for deeper than the surface clarity. I love them. You are also astoundingly prolific. Thank you for being a part of Macjams. Another wonderful post.

wow &mdash 05/01/07 - 08:59:05 AM
that's sp nice of you to say. who wouldn't blush at the term "sonic symbolism" being used to describe their work? that's very kind of you. thanks so much for stopping by and having a listen.

hey tobin &mdash 05/01/07 - 08:56:12 AM
thanks for stopping by. i'm so glad you like the song. yeah, the "piano" is from the Roland. I love that synth, and it's such an 80's machine. I used it for everything on this track. I thought about making an album all based on the JX3P, you can get such nice sounds from it.

Nice synth &mdash 05/02/07 - 12:19:55 AM
That bass sounded extraordinary from the first note. The other sounds are also simple but work great. Hm. Maybe I should get some actual hardware in addition to all this software.

Nice song too.

if you are &mdash 05/02/07 - 01:05:21 AM
going to get hardware, this is a great synth to have. it's got all of the charm of the 80's synths and you can get a lot of the 70's synth sounds too. plus they are pretty cheap (around $200), and have MIDI capabilities (old-skool and crude, but what the hey). my other fave synths are the roland SH101 (sick), and the Casio CZ series (really cheap, you can probably pick one up for $125). It's old-skool depeche mode digital, and sounds amazing.

enough of my synth op-ed, thanks for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed.

swaying back and forth &mdash 05/02/07 - 10:26:27 PM
reminds me of a lennon mind games era in away. also like how you tend to put the odd synth effects on most of your compositions that odder still, seem to make sense. i have really been enjoying your posts. keep it up, but don't burn out.

i never &mdash 05/02/07 - 10:53:42 PM
thought about the Lennon thing, but I can see it now. how can you avoid unconsciously pillaging from the greatest? maybe I need to re-record this as an acoustic number, or on piano. good idea Vic.

the only way I'll burn out is if I have to stop doing music. I feed off the stuff.

just becasue it is a ribute to the 80's.

I think it would fit well in the sequal to Pretty in Pink. She Can't Wear White!

Thanks for sharing

Good song and it does remind me of a 80's prom ballad.
Well-done.

thanks &mdash 06/09/07 - 11:01:07 AM
sometimes the instrument your playing drives the car, and takes the song over. in this case, my roland JX3P wanted to get back to it's roots. thanks for listening.

I know what you mean. &mdash 12/31/07 - 08:24:14 AM
I use to hate so many bands but now appreciate them to no end. As for the music itself, hauntingly beautiful. Your voice is so soothing and unique. Please don't ever stop singing!
