Description:
This is a new mix of an old song. It's almost a complete retread. The vocals and guitar are new and some of the synths have been changed up a bit. This is also my first mix done with Logic Express. Most of the tracks were recorded in GarageBand with the exception of a couple of backing vocal tracks which were done in Logic.

There's no telling how many versions of this tune I've posted over the past couple of years. There are one or two different mixes up, the last one from about a year ago. Feel fre to compare and contrast.

Hope you enjoy.

Lyrics:
Brainwash Games

©2006 Joseph Gurner

Plug in my iPod
Tune in to the songs
We played so long ago

Sit and watch the TV
with the sound turned way down low

I can't see
I can't feel
I can't do what they tell me
Voices on the screen

I can't laugh
I can't cry
I can't get away from
These modern brainwash games

Watching static
As the satelites movie in space
above our lives

Listen for the message
On the radio

I can't feel
I can't see
I can't do what they tell me
Voices on the screen

I can't laugh
I can't cry
I can't get away from
These modern brainwash games

Clouds are breaking
Curtains cast their shadows down
On my computer screen

Disconnect yourself
from this cold and tired worlds
and step outside

First time &mdash 05/02/07 - 07:08:23 PM
This is my first time to hear this song, and i am impressed. Some mightily impressive harmonies on those backing vocals, that remind me somehow of Pink Floyd (circa The Wall) and some nice musical touches on the keys. The overall vibe is so sweet, that it's almost possible to miss the dark undercurrents in the lyrics. Nice work. Downloaded.

I'll definitely take.... &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:39:33 PM
...a Pink Floyd comparrison. I actually call myself channeling my inner Thomas Dolby on this one. This is one of my favorite tunes, which is why I keep "upgrading" it every time I make an advance in technology or in mixing and recording skills. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment and thanks much for the download. That's awesome!

very nice &mdash 05/02/07 - 08:46:11 PM
even a little haunting on the lyrics. i like that. i vaguley remember this from last year. the added vocals has that beach boy quality to it. Your going to love logic express! great work

Can't beat... &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:43:01 PM
...the Beach Boys for good, rich harmonies. Along with CNSY, a big influence on a lot of my stuff. I'm quickly learning to love Logic Express, though it's tough love. Helluva learning curve, but no worse than Photoshp, QuarkXpress, Indesign or any other programs I've learned from scratch. It's just been an awfully long time since I've had to do that....

Thanks for stopping in Vic!

Logical step! &mdash 05/02/07 - 10:36:58 PM
Hey Joe, nice production on this - Logic sure makes a difference doesn't it?! The extra harmonies sound great. Very Brian Wilson sounds in the chord structure and some of the synth work as well. Not 100% sure about that pulsing bass, but maybe it will grow on me.
Good to see you back with a new post.
Cheers,
Neil

Since I'm a Star Trek fan.... &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:48:53 PM
....I guess Logic is the only....er....Logical choice. :-)

I'm glad you stopped by for a listen Neil. I haven't been too active lately around here. Been mainly lurking. I'm glad I have something to post, even if it is a rework. Since this tune is a perpetual "work in progress" I do plan to replace the synth bass with some real bass at some point in time when I come up with something I like. That may be around revision #9,427 in the year 2053, but I'll get to it. :-)

I am bored. No Spring in sight, love is long lost. This is my new medicine. And a very good one.

Love the piano.

Good to see you, my friend! &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:54:57 PM
We skiped spring and went straight in to summer. Love may be gone for now, but there is a wonderful smile on the horizon. And music makes everything seem so much better.

Thanks for you words and supprt, always, and from almost my first day here at MJ.

And I've been loving the poetry and writing.

The Carpenters? Really? &mdash 05/03/07 - 11:57:24 PM
That's one I haven't heard before, but is a very cool comparison. That's to my older sister, who was a teen in the early 70s, I heard pleanty of Carpetners. I soaked in everything I could wrap my ears around.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. It's very much appreciated.

Those are some very nice comments. When I can get a great comment on my vocals from someone here at MJ whose vocals are as amazing as yours, it's a good day! I appreciate it very much!

Are the man who got me started on the mixing and EQ path. I'm just branching out from what you taught me. Logic is going to be like night and day.

Always appreciate you're comments and your friendship.

Loved everything except.... &mdash 05/07/07 - 04:40:56 AM
Man, think it's a great song. Love what you did with the vocals. Very well produced. I agree with the Floyd comments. But, I must say that I HATED the iPod line in the beginning(something very unpoetic about it). Otherwise great. I'm such a nit-picker sometimes.

Pick all the nits you want.... &mdash 05/07/07 - 11:41:56 PM
...I'll make more. :)

I can see where the iPod line might be a little awkward, but since the whole theme of the song is about enslavement to technology, it felt appropriate. But, I appreciate your comment. I'm glad you stopped by and took the time to give my tune a listen.

Great &mdash 05/07/07 - 10:16:49 PM
Sweet melody, nice harmonies. Your backing instruments weave in and out of the melody line with just the right hint of darkness in that chord progression that is otherwise really nice and mellow. I'm glad you're learning about Logic Express, because this is a very fine posting of this piece.

Glad you enjoyed the tune &mdash 05/07/07 - 11:48:12 PM
I wanted a melodic coldness reminiscent of the coldness of technology to try to set the mood. I think it works out pretty good. I've mixed and re-mixed this tune a number of times, but the mix in Logic Express was by far the best one I've done. I'm going to love that program once I get going good with it. Thanks for taking a listen and commenting.

like the shimmering &mdash 05/22/07 - 10:09:59 PM
Like those backround vocals, has that R and B feel. Nice wha type synth floating from ear to ear. Almost reminds me of I can't get no satisfaction wording in a my. Cool crowd sounds.

Again lots of nice instrumentation.

Like the words disconnect yourself from the worlds. Ya, important do that for sure. Especially the way the world seems either to gaudy and harsh.

Thanks for sharing
