rich earthy fresh sounds &mdash 05/04/07 - 05:08:19 PM
Your playing and recording are quite wonderful here. This recording gives me a front-row seat, a personal almost tangible sensation of being right there as you play, excellent capturing of a guitar-in-a-room ambience. And the piece itself is soft and breezy in a way, but with a lot of rich depth as well, I guess you were going for little patches of sunlight floating across an otherwise cloud-obscured earth... that definitely came across. I can smell the moist sweet air. I'm literally glad to "hear" you have your recording setup working now!

So glad you dropped by. Interesting point about the recording: I had the mic angled up, slightly. This caught my breathing more than if I'd had it angled down. Considered another take...but I actually like the added sound of life.
Very glad you enjoyed this one. And happy to be moving along with GB. Thanks, Eduard.

Okay, Bob... &mdash 05/05/07 - 07:58:38 PM
I had the feeling when I listened to the first thing you posted that you were going to be someone whose music I was going to love...
Now, I know nothing, and that really means nothing, about classical guitar, but I love how this sounds. I love the slow pace of it, I love the feeling that it is not rushed or busy, and I love the tone that you're getting in the recording and in the performance, which is neither too bright nor too deep... It's a very real and present sound, but one that doesn't call attention to itself as sound, and that allows the piece to speak...
Your playing also lets the piece speak. You don't approach this with a lot of drama or flash, and in this case, this perfectly suits the song. This is a beautiful melody, nicely arranged, and it evokes your haiku very nicely.
I love rain, and I love songs about rain. I really like this one...

Listening to this piece and once it ended, I sat numb, and in silence as I tried to comprehend the exceptional musical performance I just heard. Phenomenal tone, phrasing and overall musicianship. Quite clearly in my mind you are a talent, such that a mere mortal like myself can only hope to grasp a fraction of the true breadth of your musical genius. To compliment such wonderful technical prowess is a remarkably well composed piece of music that to my humble ears is nothing short of awe inspiring!!!!! [ Reply to This ]

It means a great, great deal to me that you enjoyed this tune so much. I must bow down before the muses on this one, though. Can't even remember how I got it together other than to say that I was sad and it came out. You know...
I see on my email that you've got another tune out...waiting for a quiet moment to enjoy it...

Beautifully played &mdash 05/06/07 - 08:55:35 AM
You have a gorgeous, intimate sound here. I like the sound of fingers moving on the fretboard, and the slight sound of fingertip moving to fingernail as you play. This is really well done, sounds like one take. It's just a bit fragile sounding (in a good way), and I really enjoyed having that description, as it lead me through some of the ideas of the piece. Not much else to say, except faved & downloaded! [ Reply to This ]
Hi Kristy... &mdash 05/06/07 - 10:38:09 PM
Isn't the nylon string guitar wonderful? As you said: the strings catch so much of the sound of the finger's "attack". Nice to talk shop with you...as you know the instrument, too. If I had to choose between all of my wonderful guitars (hopefully that will never happen), it would be, without a doubt, my classical. Been with me for so long.
I did a few takes and chose this one to put out here. Yes: no editing. For all it's imperfections, I felt it got the message across the best. Didn't want to fiddle around with it.
So happy you liked it.

Meditative &mdash 05/07/07 - 01:09:27 AM
This is a very soothing piece of music. You have a very good technique with lots of control over loud and soft. And all the gradations in between. You actually play quite a few notes, but the result still has a stilness to it that is very restful. Sweet stuff.

Of the fine teachers I've had, the one who had the biggest influence on me was a guy I collaborated/performed with in Tucson. I used a Rode NT3 condensor, tilted slightly up, around 8 inches from the soundhole. Usually have that mic level to the ground or pointed down from a boom. Don't know why I changed...but I liked it and kept it.
Put that through an M-Audio Firewire interface into GB2. Reverb's about 1/4 of the way up. If I was using 2 mics (one soundhole, one where the neck meets the body), I probably wouldn't use reverb at all. But it works surprisingly well in this situation.
Thanks for the listen, mate...

very early in my listen this was already fav'd.. the reason we work on our technique, and spend time perfecting our craft... is because this is our vocabulary, our means to communicate...
and when the time comes, our vocabulary may allow us to trancend the wood and steel... peel away the layers and just maybe scrape the soul at that one spot where nothing else could reach...

Started to feel guilty about downloading and listening to your song over and over without commenting! Fortunately it's pretty much all been said and I can just agree with all the wonderful things everyone's saying about your music. I'm also happy that the simplicity and beauty of playing an accoustic instrument is appreciated so much - I certainly started enjoying music like that more and more after growing up on synth pop and electronic music - maybe I'm getting older or MAYBE I'm just maturing a little bit musically and start enjoying real musicianship more and more. Anyways - please keep posting here, I'm starting to set up a playlist in iTunes with your stuff:) [ Reply to This ]
