Description:
August day.
A couple makes love on the bed.
The ceiling fan spins lazily.
The curtain rises gently on a breeze through the open window.
A Mourning Dove coos gently outside.

This was an instrumental that Ann Cozean and her sister put vocals to (see Sisters here on MacJams)

Lyrics:
I was lost
Like a ship without a compass
(on the open sea)
Deep in darkness
Never knowing what my future would be
(drifting aimlessly)
All alone
Searching for my soulmate
(futiley)
But when I look into your eyes I see
Exactly what my life and my future will be
In your eyes I see
All my love for shine back at me
When I look into your eyes
Look into your eyes

They are the best &mdash 05/06/07 - 09:33:13 AM
Yes the SISTERS are the best. These two are singing fools (I mean this in the best possible way) with great voices and beautiful harmonies. I was indeed lucky to have them contribute to this piece. Anne and Marty are indeed true talents not only with their singing but with their lyrics writing ability as well.

thank you so much for the visit to our song and the kind words. I'm glad you like the mix. I worked quite a bit on this to make it sound the way I wanted it to sound and I am glad that you found it a good mix. It means a lot to me that you took the time to comment.

The harmonies are all the work of the sisters, Anne and Marty. If you haven't heard them, check out there work here on macjams under artist name SISTERS. It is well worth your time, their work if fabulous and I was lucky they wanted to sing this song.

Smooth mix &mdash 05/07/07 - 05:49:52 PM
Combination of the music and vocals is seamless. The instrumental interlude is nicely done and the vocal harmonies shine. A very pleasant listen. Special thanks to Sisters and Announcer for putting this all together.

How nice is this Bill. This was a good tune to revive. Sure takes on a whole new dimension with SISTERS onboard and adding to this. Excellent job SISTERS! Takes this to a whole larger level.

Thank you &mdash 05/08/07 - 08:29:41 AM
I do believe that I could build backing track of a pig squealing and put the sisters' beautiful harmonies and voices over the backing track and still have a beautiful song. Or in other words: They can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Thanks for the comment.

squeal &mdash 05/08/07 - 08:34:28 AM
bill - would you make the pig squeal in the key of E? you know we can't just sing to ANYthing!!! ;)

It'll cost you extra &mdash 05/08/07 - 09:35:20 AM
Making the pig squeal in the key of E is the most expensive because of what I have to do to the pig to get to that key. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

oh oh &mdash 05/08/07 - 10:00:22 AM
now, bill - don't do anything against your religion.
how much does it cost you AND me to get the squeal in DDDDDD?

Very smooooffff &mdash 05/08/07 - 11:11:22 AM
This sounds pretty professional. Everything is course well played and sung, but you have a bunch of production tricks in your bag that just make a big difference.

Things like the phasing on the drums are pretty cool, the reverb and such on the multiple vocals on "on the open sea" are very nice. And I'm green with envy about that piano riff before "when I look into your eyese". You double the first couple of notes with a bass. That's cool. But how on earth do you get that sound of that final chord? Are you doubling that with that dark pad you're using?

This is all very! very! good.

Victor.

Victor, Thanks for the very close listen &mdash 05/08/07 - 09:53:10 PM
There are a lot of really nice things that go on in the arrangement and the mix of of this piece but a lot of them I don't really remember doing or what It was that I did do.

I know that sounds like a cop-out but with my limited muscal ability my best stuff comes when I get "lost in the moment" and do enough experimenting to get the sound I am looking for. Afterwords, I am sometimes surprised and sometimes when I listen to a piece a few months later, I really don't remember where the ideas came from or what I was thinking when i put them together. Many times I listen and think "damn that guy is good ... I wonder who he is?" Then I realize it was me.

That said ... a lot of the credit on this belongs to the talents of the Sisters, Anne and Marty. Anne sent me only one track of vocals that I cut and pasted together and doubled and tripled adding some effects on some of the tracks to get the mix I wanted.

"Then I realize it was me..." &mdash 05/08/07 - 10:36:31 PM
is there a Better Feeling?

isn't it wonderful to feel that initial surprise -
which is then replaced with satisfaction at a job well done?

i smiled when i read that!
thanks, bill.

Hi Bill &mdash 05/11/07 - 12:18:40 AM
I had to come over and here this mix.
The vox is a bit different that sisters mix. Not a bad thing. The
difference is hard to put a finger on. The oooo's are a bit more up front. The panning of the synth is nice, real nice.
As I commented on sisters page i love this production and performance. What a great tune.
What a great collab...
Nice tune to start wih for sure.
I love the stucture, and chords. The playing is very tasty.
I cant say enough
I love this..all tens

Little different take on the two mixes and a bit of friendly rivalry going on as far as the two versions. I'm glad you liked it.

Like the whole tune &mdash 05/11/07 - 07:51:40 AM
Singin is nice to hear, like the modern synth.

Again this song has nice words, and the backround really fits.
[ like the oooos and ahhhhhs, lush and tight.

Like that current downtown synth style.

This has got such a sexy, dreamy sway to it... &mdash 05/13/07 - 02:05:52 PM
I love the sound and the mix. The keyboard stuff is terrific. This is one of the relatively few SISTERS tracks where the vocal doesn't just take over... And to me, that's a good thing... This one is more balanced... And the vocal IS, still, very, very strong...

Very sweet lyric, too...

Ed

The sisters and I have a little friendly rivalry going on about the mix. I think their version of the mix has a lot of merit, but I like mine better <G> Either way I think the two of them are the BEST. Great voices and a lot of talent. I was lucky they suggested singing this song for me.

Thanks for adding your name to the fav list for this song

My most poplular &mdash 05/23/07 - 08:30:29 AM
This song came out much better than I could have ever imagined but most of the credit has to go to Anne and Marty who, when it comes to measuring talent, are in a different universe than most of the rest of us.

ahhh... &mdash 05/31/07 - 10:56:29 AM
What a nice soft lazy piece, but with a bit of caffeine zip too... the music bed is very relaxing, and it is hard to go wrong with A&M there. I've not heard the original instrumental, nor their mix, so I'll just comment on this one. The only negative thing I heard in this was the breathy synth panned off to the left, the phasing effect on it made it feel like there was a loose steam hose meandering around in my left ear... possibly slow down the phaser effect, or bring it closer to center, maybe? It stood out and was a little distracting in headphones... to me, I must add, since nobody else seems to mind it :-) The piano, and plucky synth are really great, as is the overall music... I am transported to those wonderful days myself, listening to this, hypnotized by the ceiling fan and warm glow... uh, where was I? Oh, and the Sisters come up with great singing and harmony on this. A delight!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Thanks for the comment &mdash 05/31/07 - 02:53:26 PM
Funny that you should mention the synth in the one channel because I mix most of my stuff to sound good on phones and I try to work more with the z axis of the soundstage than the x axis. I very seldom pan anything heavily into one channel with out a balance on the other at the same time or somewhere later in the piece 'cause I don't like the way that feels on phones. This is one of the few pieces where I did hit some of the swoopy syths fairly biased to one side. I don't know why I did it that way but it felt good at the time. There are a lot more layers in this song than most of mine because I wanted to hit the feeling of being lost in the gaze. Glad you felt it affected you that way..

A nice improvement &mdash 06/23/07 - 10:53:05 PM
To me, this mix is a real improvement. The instrumentals seem more interesting, and the vocals cleaner. Give Dianne Schuur a call. ;-)
