Description:
I wondered what 12 acoustic guitar tracks would sound like. Basically there is 8 in the verse and up to 12 on the chorus. Also there is a bit of experimentation on back up guitars on the second part of the guitar solo section. This is produced by 9 electrics.
The gal is no one in particular. Just a kind of Eleanor Rigby character.
The gal is no one in particular. Just a kind of Eleanor Rigby character.
Lyrics:
Forever Yesterdayshe is always seeing ghosts
she lives to much in the past
voiceless way to be alive
shrouded by the mist that fades
CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days
in a haze she dances and sways
to the record she plays
a worn photo album she keeps
her own visual diary
CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days
sweet resistance in your mind
where you're lost in time
someone told you where you were
and you felt the sting
and it really hurts
with these wings you could have flown
somewhere never known
times and days stay in place
with your well worn memories
CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days
angel dreams

You have topped yourself yet again! This may just displace "Black Ice" as my favorite Holman tune. You seem to be getting more confident in your singing ability. This is a good thing. I have always thought you hung back too much. Your vox fits your music like a glove. Guitar work is fantastic. Love the electric leads and the lovely Spanish style acoustic riffing. Bravo and encore Vic!
Be well!
PS---Is that the woman you were telling me about? Hmmmnn....
Vic Holman
but.....i can only sing 6 notes. i'm pretty happy with this one as well. i definately got some practice in on the guitar with this. Obviously i haven't watched tv in quite a while. now my question is answered on how it would sound with a lot of acoustics but it was fun and entertaining to get it all in there.
yeah i think this gal will fit the bill quite nicely

"We are put upon this earth a little space that we might learn to bear the beams of love." (William Blake)
Simply amazing!
The guitar work is ouuta this world!
Vic Holman
mostly this grew from decompressing from work and saying to myself "just one more track" came close to needing a shoehorn to make it all fit. someday i need to simplify.

... HUGE sounding. phenominal job! each layer gets tastier than the last... excellent!
Vic Holman
It was interesting to see how far i could push it. it was fun though even if it was time consuming.
Thanks for taking the time to listen. i appreciate it!

Really beautiful chord modulations or whatever you call it when things change a little and it sounds really neat. Smokin' lead dude - and love the spanish thing. I here a little ELP Lucky Man vibe somehow - can't explain why.
BTW - Vic - you gotta get in on the LIOLI challenge. I know you're more of a live guy - but I wanna hear another side of your twisted sonic beauty.
Vic Holman
its hybrid picking, a pick and a few fingers thrown in for good measure. my pinky finger got the most workout on the fret board. the 2 solos in actually got in the first pass, that was a relief. i think i'm picking up on your "Lucky Man'' reference.
I'm thinking on the LIOLI, i have the loops, but i need to play around for a day or two to decide if I'm going to suck at it miserably. i'll let you know.

Just don't start waving a gun around!
Vic Holman
okay i put the gun away. but if it's alrght by you i would like to keep the wigs. Especially the big frizzy one. It's great for cleaning off cobwebs in high places.

Vic Holman
it was a full house for sure. just had to make a few eq and notch filter changes on the acoustic's controls and it was off to another track.
I was just listening to your new one with Neil. man that drives.
Thanks again!

Vic your stuff always seems to grab me even though if i think about it it shouldn't. Some of your stuff draws me in like the proverbial moth to the flame despite the fact that it is not mainstream in many of its elements. I guess that is one of the things that is so great about music. I don't have to think about it. It enters my brain directly, bypassing the gatekeeping functions that usually keep the world right side up for me. This is a great mix and overall a great sound. Keep em coming!!!!
Vic Holman
everyone says i'm a little strange anyway. I always try to throw some twist into the songs as you know. Probably the most unexpected thing I could do is a straight song.
Thanks again Bill. Appreciate you listening!

Jeez Vic - how the hell do you do it? You're constantly topping yourself, and here you go again! The guitars sound awesome on this, and what a killer chorus. This is a really commercial track, with spit and polish to the max. Honestly, this is just fabulous - the structure works so well, and the soundscaping on this just ... oh, i'm outta superlatives.
please come round and give me some production lessons!
Steve
Vic Holman
Glad you liked it. I just go from part to part, give it some thought, and think of each piece as a seperate mini-song. And, of course put in some extra hours.
I had added some synths but they just didn't seem to fit sonically. To me it's just about having some fun. If I can do this anyone can. If i can answer any questions I'm usually around.
Thanks again Steve!

Scott Carmichael
hey you could have saved time with 6- 12 string trax... math joke...
I absolutley love the arpeggio lick after "grounded in the remaining days" the time that you take with it and notes that you choose are perfect... and the chorus is excellent... you have a lot going on here, it's obvious that you love to play and produce guitars, but your song is not just an exuse to play... you still take the time to do the story telling... because of this, your guitar drenched production doesn't come across self indulgent... it hits just right.. I also appreciate your willingness to break rules and take chances and take the bridge in an unexpected direction... it is the right mood for your story... it fits
Vic Holman
I do have a 30 year old Takaminie 12 string that has been getting jealous of never getting any air time.
It actually started as just an experiment on the verse part just to see what it would sound like. I liked it and decided to expand on it. It was an excuse to keep playing more parts. I find this is a nice way to decompress from work in the evenings.
Thanks again Scott.

...this is TOTALLY self-indulgent... I think that's why I'm listening to it...
Needs a little more guitar, though...
Ed

I've been thinkng for some time on what alot of acoustics would sound like. I was glad that there was no phase cancellation. So i learned a few things there. But a lot of panning happens. You can't set a pan at one spot and leave it. Also for a tech tip: I use the high pass filter o the guitars with the frequency set around 270. Then on the menu to the left where the volume and pan list is you can also select the other plug ins and adjust them to certain regions. so in some cases i would drop the filter down to let more bottom end come out and raise 'em back up when needed. it works and edits like the lines you see on tracks for volume and pan.
Thanks again Ed. Appreciate it.

... "is there a guitarist in the house?" ;)
I love a phallanx of acoustics - such a nice jangly sound. You realise you could have got the same effect with 6 12-strings of course, and saved a heap on session fees (late again with the maths jokes, but I wrote it before I read Scott's!).
Really like the song Vic - just spacey enough to push my Beatles'n'Byrds buttons. You sure are getting better as you go, this is a very enjoyable listen. You only need 5 notes - you've got one spare!
Cheers,
Neil
Vic Holman
Started as a lark to just hear what it would sound like. Be awhile before i do that again.....(maybe). Of course with the twelve it would a wicked time on the finger picking.
I think I'll keep that extra note as a spare in case one of the others breaks down.

Nice guitar tones.
Love all the acoustic guitars going on. Nice, real nice.(Chimes/perfect...cool work)
something bout you is So Harrison like(as I've said before). Your singing and the chord structure.
Great electric solo, this one so un Harrison like.
What a great arrangment when you segway back to the lyric after the solo. Nice bend on the end...
I'm going to listen to this one many times.
Great tune...
I'd give you all 10's or five stars or best song nomination

find those keys? wheres those confounded keys, has anybody seen the keys
Vic Holman
i should look under the bridge! Thanks Tim. I probably will never shake the George thing. Just as well.
I thought the fast lead solo would be fun and unexpected.
But ya know I'm going to throw something odd in there.
And kudos to you on getting more of your vocals out there!
---

Thanks for getting me started with the vocals. You gave the push.
I would'nt try to shake the George thing he was an influence to us all including John n Paul, i'm sure.
I absolutly love this tune.
You did such a vine job from conception to performance and recording.
Just great.

The "wall of sound" just got a new meaning... 12 acoustic guitar tracks and 9 electrics? WOW!
Great tune, big sound!
Vic Holman
I though i would have phase cancelling problems but it came together pretty easily. The droning sustained guitar that serve as a backwash is something i've played around with for a while and finally found a use for.
Now i have to climb over that wall and find something else to muck around with.
Thanks again!

...are so deep. Very powerful.
I used to love Squeeze...and I hear some of their influence here.
Great chord changes. Fine vocals. Really enjoyed this, Vic.
Vic Holman
I to was (still am) into squeeze. i know i picked up a few of there hooks and chords along the way. I kept joking on past song comments "it just needs one more guitar" so i went with it. definately fun orchestrating this piece.
Thanks again, Bob. Appreciate you listening.

now where's those car keys?
I think the angel will need a few more hands for al those guitars.there is a part near the end where you are coming out of a solo and you can hear all the guitars then on top a kind of spanish flutter... How in the heck do you do that excellent
Vic Holman
but then i'ld have to teach them all how to play. as if this didn't take a lot of time as is.
That droning thing is something i've played around with for years. its using a delay with infinite repeat. one note, then add a harmozing note and a third. let it play on. i did three tracks of this with each track doing something a little different. One of those tracks is used a old pitted slide and used like a bow over the notes that where in the same key. did take about 3 hours to get what i wanted. just takes time to get it to sound right.

Vic I love the lead guitar break in the middle. Nice accoustic guitar sound and playing my friend. The synth bridge lead in after the guitar solo was very nice. Great job all around. Oh yeah - can't forget the vocals - very good as well. Nice arrangement.
Thanks for sharing,
mvh : )
Vic Holman
well we love guitars. Glad you liked it. I think i pretty much gave up all the tips in the comments on how i did this.... no synth guitars just alot of guitars through delays. even though i did try a synth but it didn't blend as well or sound weird enough.
---
now where's those car keys?
mvh9591
I'm so sorry Vic. I should have taken the time to read more. So no synth?
OKay then....had me fooled. Very_very nice use of guitars.
Thanks again,
mvh : )
Vic Holman
it's a cool effect to create. i've created sounds with this effect that can sound like keyboards. worth playing with.

What a sound! The guitars are terrific. I think it was Mike Scott from the Waterboys who said it was his ambition to create a wall of acoustic guitars. Somebody should call him and tell him it's been done...and I love the lead guitar - exceptional playing and effects (I like the twinning with the synth). The vocal performance is also terrific. This is outstanding. Nice work. Peace.
Vic Holman
i had been asking myself for a long time "what would it sound like?" so I finally got around to give it a try. time comsuming, but fun. the synth sound is actually more guitars. that's something else i' ve experimented with. 3 tracks using delays. just hat segment took several hours to get it just right.
Thanks again! i appreciate you taking the time to listen!

Vic, your guitar playing is just great. I love the lead you play towards the end before the last verse and chorus. I don't anybody on MJ that plays better guitar on their songs.
The sounds you get on the guitars are just great.
I also hear a King Crimson influence in some of your riffs and chord progressions, if that makes any difference.
Vic Holman
i just spend the extra time to balance things out. I'm learning production as i go along, so i'm seeing it as a new instrument to learn and play.i got real lucky on the solo section. had both parts on the second take.
Thanks again Tim. I enjoyed your new tune.

yea i seem to remind alot of people of G.H. Then again i originally did learn to play guitar to beatle songs. then again you may have to with the post you had up for a while there ;-).

Such a great production!!!
I am hereby admiting that I haven't listened much to your songs before (maybe because you look like a cartoon :)
.. it was my daughter who yesterday klicked a song at random in someones favsong-list and up came the most fantastic music .. I burst into flames with enthusiasm and said "stop, stop, don't klick anymore I wanna hear more .. who is this .. this is fantastic music .. so creative, imaginative and professional at the same time"
.. and so it was you .. (and the song was Lucky Guy) .. After hearing that one and this one I am clearly a big fan from now on!
Vic Holman
Everyone tells me i am a cartoon character in real life, i thought it was because i'm funny. I could be wrong, they could mean something else.
I do spend a lot more time in putting songs together then i use to. But it is a blast learning as i go along.

Fantastic!
"a bit of experimentation on back up guitars on the second part of the guitar solo section"
The second Harmonaized guitar felt me very wonderful.
Because the sound of an acoustic guitar and the voice was taken very well, I felt
admiration very much.
I like this one!
Vic Holman
I usually try to throw in some odd guitar elements into songs. Always interesting to see how it works in the frame of things.
I appreciate you listening!

Dang man i loved this song. I agrey with Amagi and Tom, the Guitar work is the best, I wish Icould play that good!!
Vic Holman
It was a bit self indulgent. but i've always told my self someday I'm going overboard with the guitars and see how many i can get in.
Also think composition. even simple guitar lines can be effective.

the melody the style the words ...!
Man this is super classic on your list
very very much Artrock you reminds me
of Jonsey and Gun !!
this is a GEM thank you for sharing it

there is alot of guitars on this to create a big sound. it was fun and time consuming to keep playing and recording over and over.
Really glad that you enjoyed it

Your music is always so ALIVE! Amazing piece of work, and very provocative lyrics! I worry about Angel though; she needs to put on her 'big girl' panties and deal with it - been there, done that, "Phoenixed!", and got a really great pair of beautiful gossamer wings on sale at MacJams.com; or was that Victoria's Secret? :)[ref: "Tuesday's" missing avatar, which was only about 1/16th of the whole - the black patent leather spike heels were wild! :)] Your cartoon graphic reminds me of the song "Rocket Boy" by Liz Phair! Also, love the refrence to "Lucky Man" by ELP (See SmokeyVW's "Petr Dumfrey" for the real life tragic "lucky man" RPG - Rocket Propelled Grenade) Q: Please explain how William Blake and "D" cups can coexist in the same grey matter. :) LOL! I'm very comfortable with the letter "C" considering the mathmatical equation : time plus the forces of gravity. :)

so sorry Mr. Vic, i've told you before that it's maybe my favorite song @ MJ, loved the guitar work here, the vocal is very fits and very nice to listen. The lyrics, LOVED IT !
A real Master Piece by Master Musician
Just great and wish someday i can do like this !
Thanks for sharing such GEM ! and so sorry for being late ..

I'm glad it's one of your fav's. That's pretty cool.
The way your going I'm sure you'll be doing songs that will want to make me give up! ;-)
