Description:
Maple Leaf Rag was composed by Scott Joplin in 1916.
I have adopted this arrangement from an LP (from around 1969) where it is played by Swedish ragtime guitar player Lasse Johansson, who also made the arrangement.
Actually, before I knew of the record, I heard Lasse Johansson playing it live in 1969 in Stockholm .. It was the first time I ever heard ragtime played on guitar.. Can you guess if I was flabbergasted? I was totally wiped out. But more was to come. That night Lasse was part of the band Growing Grass and they acted warm-up band for Stefan Grossman, who I'd never heard before that. So the same night I was to hear mr Grossman perform one nifty ragtime guitar arrangement after another .. Could hardly speak for a week after that .. guess my eyes were sparkling .. new doors had opened ..
Took me until 2005 before I made the job to figure out how Lasse Johansson actually play it on the guitar .. and this recording I made in the summer of 2005. Didn't post it then because it is not my own arrangement, but now I'm not that ambitious anymore .. it is nice music and i might as well post it.
Enjoy!

Both my wife and I really enjoyed this -- she hardly ever comments on the stuff I listen to at MacJams, but she immediately wanted to know who did this, and said it was very well done. I disagreed with her, of course; I think it's amazingly well done! Your playing is something all MacJammers treasure. [ Reply to This ]

I really like that fancy little thing you did in there (can you tell I don't know musical terminology?) Do you use special tuning to play this? It's amazing how you can do melody and bass at the same time. Really pretty! [ Reply to This ]

I still have the (piano)sheet music to Maple Leaf Rag from when I learned to play it in grade school!
It was fun to listen to and even more fun to play.
It's really cool to hear a guitar version of this....happy music!
Thanks, Curry :) [ Reply to This ]

Don't want to embarass you Curry, &mdash 05/08/07 - 12:02:04 AM
so I won't go on about what a masterful player you are, or how much I like the way you convey emotion through your playing, or even mention the joy I feel when I listen to you play. Similarly I won't even think about discussing what a great version of this classic you've done.
I will simpply say - "that's OK Curry - keep practicing!".
Cheers,

Besides your obvious playing abilities, the arrangement's right on it.

I'm glad you posted this. It's happy and rambunctious. The next time I'm thinking of getting angry with my kids, I'll play this, and get everything back into perspective, again. This is like 'joy in an mp3.' [ Reply to This ]

Great Version &mdash 05/11/07 - 03:19:31 PM
Great job. There is a rag guitar player named Craig Ventrusco from San Francisco who is also is very impressive. He did the music for the film "Crumb" and plays in a group called Bo Grumpus.
Enough about Craig. Your tone and playing on this song is excellent. Thanks for posting. [ Reply to This ]

This is the first time I've ever heard ragtime on guitar. You do Joplin justice. As a guitar player myself I am in awe of your fingerpicking skills. [ Reply to This ]
I finally got a chance... &mdash 05/13/07 - 02:15:01 PM
...to listen to this over speakers, and louder than usual...
It makes clear just how clear and pure this recording is, for one thing. It has great presence, a real sense of the wood of the guitar, the fingers (and especially thumb) of the man playing, and the metallic zing of the strings... Great synergy...
As you know, I'm not the hugest fan of ragtime, but if I'm ever going to stop and listen to some, it's going to be you. And I've heard Eric Schoenberg and John Renbourn and Stefan Grossman, among others, and I find the most consistent life in your versions... There's a lot of you that comes through, while staying true to the composition's spirit...

wow! &mdash 07/19/07 - 07:10:08 PM
I'm totally envious. I've always wished I could play guitar like that. I can fake it well enough to sound better than I really am, but when push comes to shove I would be absolutely lost trying to keep up with something like this. Very very nice.
Cheers!

I enjoyed this guitar version quite a lot. This piece is kind of challenging on the piano, but I imagine it must be a lot more so on the guitar. Amazing playing! I love listening to your songs!
