Description:
I had this one pretty much done, then Chris came over and did some lead guitar and vocals on it. Very top-40 "Boys of Summer" sounding to me. Just sounds like something you'd hear on the radio during the summer, but with a deeper edge. It's also the debut of my new guitar, which I think recorded well and add some nice textures.

Rich Huston (Drums, Acoustic, Bass, Mix)
Chris Winters (Lead guitar, Vocals, Lyrics)

Lyrics:
Touch the Sky
Lyrics: Chris Winters. Music: Rich Huston, Chris Winters. Recorded May 3, 2007

Walking barefoot in the parking lot
In summer
Under skies of rose and apricot
I wonder
If those who laid this down
Had foreseen their renown
That in their paving stones
They mixed their children’s bones

Among the shadows of
Those we both fear and love
In fading memory
We pray we will outlast
Spectres here from the past
In dying history

Walking back home under highway lights
I feel it
The grass beneath my feet is cool tonight
And endless
The broken concrete teeth
Ring the clearing where we meet
They no longer touch the sky
We hope we can learn to fly

60's vibe &mdash 05/08/07 - 11:02:10 PM
A few people have mentioned the 60's vibe, but I find it to be much more of an 80's thing. Like a lot of top 40 rock stuff (Foreigner, Don Henley). Not so much in style, but in the general feel of the recording.

Good flow &mdash 05/07/07 - 07:16:21 PM
This song has a nice flow to it. None of the instrument really jumps out of the mix, so you get a nice massive block of music that flows in one piece. It's hard to distinguish what the bass is doing, but meanwhile it nicely drives the song. That all probably makes sense with a relatively straight forward pop song like this.

You get some nice guitar sounds in places. Which one is the new one?

thanks for the comments &mdash 05/07/07 - 08:17:45 PM
I sort of designed this song to not have a blocky, verse/chorus structure, to just flow. It sounds like the opener of an album to me. Anyway, the bass was a bit busy (stupid me) and so I didn't want it to high in the mix. The new guitar is the acoustic you hear in the left channel that sort of drives the song.

like most of your songs &mdash 05/07/07 - 11:31:44 PM
this one kicks some serious ass. Great groove. i liked the vintage fuzz sound on the guitar lines. it made a nice contrast and jumps out to me in a good way.

Chris has a Line 6 Flextone II amp and gets the best sounds out of it. He has an amazing knowledge of the thing, he just stomps on a bunch of buttons and there it is.

Very nicely done friend! I think the drums could have some more life in the mastering phase, but that is totally minor.

Filters &mdash 05/08/07 - 03:26:08 AM
I'm just at the beginning stages of discovering High and Low Pass Filters, not to mention mastering in any sense of the word. Hopefully soon I can start really getting the drums right.

Like the 60s never happened &mdash 05/08/07 - 01:24:09 AM
hey Rich - another cracking track. I think your production is definately improving, the guitars sound wonderful on this. This has a lovely breezy feel to it, especially the chorus, countered with some really nice chunky guitars.
Really like the vocal on this (although tell Chris I've never heard 'apricot' pronounced like that before!), there's a great attitude to it.
My only quibble is the quick tail out, which sounds kinda rushed.

I can't wait for the day when I've got a whole album from you guys - it's gonna be great!

Steve

apricot &mdash 05/08/07 - 02:31:57 AM
Hehe, I was wondering about the pronunciation of apricot myself. Thanks for the kind words Hey, I haven't forgot your songs. They are next up on the list. I have been a little bogged down lately. I have three new songs besides this one I'll post soon, then I'm on to your two. Sorry for my tardiness.

Rich ... 3 new songs, jeez, you guys are on fire at the moment. Have you got a band name yet?

working band name &mdash 05/08/07 - 03:29:19 AM
our working band name is "Ghost Hoodie." It is subject to change but we seem pretty content with it. It was actually a working name for a song I came up with, to describe our little lesbian colloborator friend of the time. She had a nasty habit of making her lovers leave EVERY night so she could sleep and always wore a hoodie. Hence Ghost Hoodie. Love em' and leave em'.

Rock on. When you moving from the sticks to Seattle to join our band? You and Chris with your similiar voice would make a killing combo of rock genuis.

Sell the house/sell thekids/I'm never coming back &mdash 05/08/07 - 05:15:04 AM
Ah, if only Rich. I've spent 8 years being a frustrated musician, and finally meet people who write what i wanna write, and their 1000's of miles away. Shee-ite!

Er, i gotta say, Ghost Hoodie doesn't light my fire - it's a good name, but I dunno that it suits what you do. Sounds a bit jokey to me, but maybe it'll grow on me.

Are you guys gonna play live anytime?

Steve

Hey Peng! &mdash 05/08/07 - 08:20:32 AM
Nice Bowie-like song. Just wanted to give you a shout out and say that I really like your song. Yeah, I agree with the 60's comments, but with a 2007 feel.
Keep it up bro. SUPER p.s. like the title
