Description:
This is a song about the danger of working in emergency services and the damage it can cause those left behind.
The words come from Michael Harich, a very talented composer and musician from southwestern Germany. The music is from yours truly.
Lyrics:
Fireproof
Pours another cup of coffee
Served with sugar and a smile
Gotta hurry up to be on time,
Bathed in her eyes a while
Always been afraid that she’d lose him,
Today the toast burned black
Hiding a tear, She kissed him good-bye,
She knew he wouldn’t come back
The morning sun’s a greeting,
Like the twilight serves the sky
No clouds cut across the deep, bright blue,
My mind’s a shadow flying
Mirrors explode and heaven breaks,
Nothing seems to fit
A deadly silence falls,
She knew he wouldn’t come back
She knew he wouldn’t come back
Chorus
Don´t be afraid he always told her
But his words failed to soothe
“No heat can do me harm or hurt me
Cause I’m fireproof
Fireproof”
Pours herself across the floor,
holds up his picture with a smile
Her fingers tremble, tears on his badge,
Bathes in his eyes for what feels
Like an eternity
She knew he wouldn’t come back
She knew he wouldn’t come back
Chorus

Acoustic Guitar &mdash 05/10/07 - 10:45:03 PM
For those of you keeping score at home I used a Guild D-25M acoustic guitar on Fireproof. I forgot to mention it above. [ Reply to This ]

But that goes without saying.
You sing and play well. The whole arrangement is pretty good.

Good song. &mdash 05/27/07 - 07:53:32 PM
Sort of an old school rhythm and blues / rock and roll kind of feel, a bit of a Bob Seger vibe. Who are your vocal influences? [ Reply to This ]
Beatles &mdash 05/28/07 - 06:44:56 AM
When it comes to singing my major influences are John, Paul and George, especially harmony. I also think Dylan is an influence for just about anyone who picks up a guitar and sings folk, rock or country. I also like Elvis Costello and Beck quite a bit.
From the piano side, I like Randy Newman, Fats Domino and Fats Walter (notice a trend here?) among many others.
Thanks so much for listening and commenting.

great observations &mdash 05/29/07 - 01:59:26 PM
Tim - I love the line:
Today the toast burned black
such a great simple line and a great image/metaphor. the thing that makes this for me is your voice - really fragile, almost ready to break, that gives this track a great honesty.
i nearly missed this, I'm so glad i didn't.

Toast &mdash 05/31/07 - 01:46:39 AM
I agree with you about the toast line. A friend of mine from Germany, Michael Harich, provided the lyrics and I edited them somewhat and wrote the music so it was an "international" collaboration.
Michael has a new album out called "American Suicide" produced by another friend, Tommy Wahl, which is very good.

wow, touching &mdash 05/30/07 - 07:30:39 AM
The lyrics are definitely deeply touching. But they are all the more penetrating carried on the sound bed. A very nicely written ballad. And I like the simple (not overcrowded) arrangement. The singing is good too. The only thing that I didn't care for much was the super-widely panned drums, I think the drummer should be put back together again and moved closer to center. Anyway, nice job here. A friend of mine at work *was* married to a firefighter and lost him a few years ago. Hits home.

Drums &mdash 05/31/07 - 01:43:15 AM
I used a GB loop for the drums so that's how they came.

This is a really moving tribute to men like him. Real sung and produced - reminds me a little of the emotion I've heard in some Mexican ballads - straight from the heart. Nice work. Thanks for posting. [ Reply to This ]

I listened to the song again after reading your post and there is a bit of Old Mexico in there. Thanks for picking that up.

this does have a Mexican feel to it. Kick back with a few tequilas and enjoy. Nice job all the way around. [ Reply to This ]
Waisted Away &mdash 06/07/07 - 11:51:01 PM
Have a couple of tequilas on me. It's funny I never thought about a Mexican influence, but when it was pointed out it became so obvious.
Thanks for coming by Z and taking a listen. Your comments are appreciated.
