Description:
I wrote this back in 96 right before Christmas. I was going through some trying times. It has a strong message and it's a little catchy. Hell I don't know? You tell me!
Lyrics:
As I gaze across this old field of whitenessI wonder where the years have gone
It's nearing Christmas yet I'm overwhelmed with sadness
For I have been away to long
Through the eyes of a child I want to see
The Holy birth of our Lord
It seems as though man has lost the true meaning
For all the money he can hoard
Families gather this time every year with gladness
To finely be home with there loved ones
I think back to a time not long ago of sadness
For I was lost and could not make it home
Hardware:
Ibanstein plank electric, Dean long scale bass, a Shure PG48 mic and an M-AUDIO FASTTRACK USB plugged into an old hopped up mac G4Software:

and very good vocal performance. I like the guitar riff. The vocal does seem a bit low in the mix - which is a pity, since it's an excellent performance. Nice work. Peace.
Axgrinder
Hey thanks! Yea, I don't have a real great mic right now. I need something a wee bit hotter so I can cut through easier! Thanks for your comment. Damn it Jim! I'm a guitarist not a vocalist! Lol.
C.O.Jones
This is freakin sweet! Great lryics, singing and production. I dig this alot.
Axgrinder
Hey, Thanks C.O.J., I appreciate that immensely! I need to sharpen up the vocals a bit. Actually, I plan to do it over again here in the near future. I'm sure your more than a little understanding when it comes to production, you know the drill "It's got to be just right"! Perfectionism is the bane of my talent bro! Keep those strings a bending!
Alannah
.. I commented .... I agree with the earlier comments .... great TUNE ... just needs a little tweaking in the mixing aspect ... of course a good mic helps ... but I think there are things that can be done with software that totally FIXES whatever mic issues you have .... FABULOUS harmonies by the way !!!! Would totally make me all Christmasy (if it weren't MAY) !! Next Xmas the re-mix of this will go into my collection !!!
Axgrinder
Thanks Alannah, What? You never heard of the month of Maycember? Your comments are truly appreciated!
FlapJack
!!!!!!!!
Axgrinder
Thanks for the comment FlapJack! I appreciate it a great deal.

job on the vocals. i was recording a lot with an SM57 that wasn't really cutting through, so i would boost the vocals up a bit with the AU matrix reverb (just twiddle it around a bit and you'll find the sweet spot), and i would also add the tiniest touch of overdrive.
this is a nice song, and you sing and play really well. good job.
Axgrinder
Who's Micheal1 then? I appreciate your kind words. I shall return the favor I'm sure.
Magritte
Very touching singing, goes beautifully with your playing. I can't say I'm crazy about the applause at the beginning; this song is very sweet and gentle and I don't think the fx are needed.
Axgrinder
The applause was kind of a joke, you know, as if I were playing for real like I have always dreamed I could. Anyway, the remix won't have anyone applauding in the audience because they'll be bound and gagged! Lol. I greatly appreciate your comments.
this is really something. i love the guitars doing a neat dance around each other!
the vocals and harmonies are really nice and soothing.
GREAT tune!
Axgrinder
Hey, thank you! I am honored that you commented so highly. I's truly appreciated my friend.

But also very nice to hear, now. I'd echo a lot of what's been said. Great vocal harmonies. I love the color of your voice. Warm, yet strong. The applause can be dropped in favor of a longer guitar intro, IMHO. Do you have additional lyrics that aren't printed?
Yeah, reupload your new mix in December, or the last week of November. LOTS of people do Christmas mixes, burn them on CDs and then have something different, yet holiday-ish for playing when guests come, etc. This would be a definitely great addition for those folks.
Axgrinder
The intro was a joke and I plan to do a remix very soon! I have no other lyrics but have thought about adding another verse, Thanks for pointing that out. I appreciate your comments and also for taking the time to do so! I've learned quite a lot about myself and MJ. these past few days, let me tell you! nice meeting you me lady.

"It's all pink on the inside"
Blew me away! This song has everything a "hit" should have, but KILL the applause. Anyway, Hat's Off!!! Amazing! I think you ARE a vocalist! Send me a note when you update this. Thanks for sharing!
Axgrinder
I agree with you guys! It's gone on the much needed remix, I promise. Anyway, Thanks PQR! You flatter the holy living poop out of me bro! A hit? Perhaps if I learn how to sing, Lol. All el natural my friend. I am honored that "you" think so at any rate. It is a good song and likely the best I've ever written. I wish you had your own label..........Pick Quick Records? Hmmmmm. Your much to kind!

I agree with previous posts that your vocals deserve a better mic. Your voice is great and I have to say the guitar work is pretty amazing too. The whole thing fits together really well.
Dave
Axgrinder
I'm fixing to throw her in the old re-mixer and try to blend out the roughness a bit, ditch the arena applaud loop intro (twas a joke) and spark up the vox so I stand out a little more. A hotter mike is definitely a priority for sure. I'd like to do a collab. with you sometime Dave! Just a thought. Thanks again

Excellent melody and vocal harmonies. I really like your voice, you have excellent tone and your phrasing was fluid and suitable patient - suited the cadence of your lyrics. The guitar playing is also excellent. I appreciated how the solos melded so seamlessly with the accompaniement without being over the top ( as you have the chops to do so ). Very tasteful playing that demonstrated well developed musicianship and melodic sensibility. Thought this was very good!
Axgrinder
Wow man, You about made me cry. Seriously, My eye's were watering! I was in a dark place when I wrote that one, winter of 96. I was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had been a psycho-tropic guinea pig for several months prior. I'm so glad that I'm able to share it with my fellow MJ'ers. I believe I'm finely centered after a life of utter lunacy! I truly appreciate your kindness and sincerity!

"It's all pink on the inside"
I really enjoyed this man. The guitar melody is very pretty and the leads are moody and evocative. Lot's of nice phrasing. RE the vocals...not too shabby bro. The harmonies were very nicely executed as well. Kudos!
Be well!
Axgrinder
Wow, Thanks Amagi! That was a fairly confidence enhancing appraisal, my talented friend. Is there anyone on here that's lacking any? Pretty amazing, I'll grant you that! See you around Jamtropolis.

"It's all pink on the inside"
Axgrinder
What in the hell was that all about? I'm sorry Mike. I was just skimming through some of the awesome comments I received on this one when I found this major glitch on my behalf! Damn. I figure either Amagi dropped out and I spaced replying to your comment or I called you Amagi? Which ever the case may be, I thank you for your kind words and apologize whole heartedly for dropping the ball!

In the land of the blind, a one eyed man is king!
Your message came through loud and clear. I just wish everyone else felt the same way in this world about Christmas. You made me feel something good. Thanks.
Axgrinder
Yeah, it has become a bit commercialized hasn't it? I was going through hell when I wrote this! Thanks for not dinging me for such an unseasonable upload. I appreciate your understanding as well as your comment.
---
Whom ever uses constraints while composing is constrained themselves!
I love the music, and your voice is wonderful. Your lyrics are very poignant. One of the most heartfelt Christmas songs I've heard - not like the sappy ones played on the radio around Christmas. Well done Bro. And I love the Aurora Borealis in your graphic.
Axgrinder
I'm glad you liked it. It's a bit on the rough side but I plan to do a remix for the Holidays. It will never be good enough for me though because I am a perfectionist savant who deep down inside wants to delete everything I've uploaded so far. The the theater applause intro was meant to be a joke, it won't be in the remix! Anyhow, thanks again for your kind words.

gail60
I really love this song. The words are great. I wish we would all see a lot of things through the eyes of a child and then we would all be happier. The harmonies are really nice. Great job! You play, sing and write music very well!
Axgrinder
For such a simple tune it has a lot of depth and weight. God wrote it trough me. I was merely the vessel! Anyhow, thanks again for your kind words and for the gift of inspiration. My door is always ajar.

that you live in a logging community, and take care of sharpening the woodsman's axes. (lol)
All kidding aside, this is a lovely song that is very well thought out and done. I love the harmony on the chorus, and the playing. And it's very good song writing.
That said, my only suggestion to improve on this song would be to bring the main vocal up in the mix a little more so the lyrics shine through like they should.
I like this a lot, thank you for sharing.
Ed
Axgrinder
I was raised in a logging community and have actually ground quite a few of them there ax's. Probably sharpened more chainsaws, actually! ;-P Very astute of you to ascertain the lack of punch in my vocals. I have a way better mic now and plan to post a remix (remake) within the next month for the holiday season (it was a bit premature) Minus the crowd cheer intro of course. Thanks for droppin in and I shall be returning the favor my friend.

liked this song aand your playing is great and u are singing some nice harmonies..
Axgrinder
I'm suppose to be doing a remix without the "crowed roar intro" It was meant to be humorous! I really appreciate you droppin by and your kind words. It is nice to get a comment on such an old post! Very sweet of you. Thanks again.

Yes, you need a better vocal microphone. Great harmonies and composition. This reminded me of Aerosmith's "Dream On". The tone of your guitar is excellent. You've heard plenty about the crowd noises, no need to say more. Can't wait to hear some more from you!
Axgrinder
Got a new/used EV N/D357A so now all I have to do is start using it! I had 7 other songs up but I just deleted them out of pure insanity. I wasn't all together pleased with the results, so you know how that goes. I decided to leave this one with the Holidays and all! I'm glad you liked it, for it's likely the best song I have ever written. I've got a few on the burner so I should have something up on here soon. Thanks for dropping in.

Nice song man..i love that Live feeling. Dont know if that was the idea but it sounds really live (especially with headphones) Nice vox to.

To tell you the truth; everyone wanted to here me sing, since I went and told the community that I could! So this is what I posted. it's 11 yrs. old. (The song, not the recording) I guess I was sort of going for that "live" feel. I appreciate you dropping by for a listen.

As I managed to finally get an OK Aproach the good or at least very OK feeling followed. Thank you so much! I felt sort of stupid for posting that forum and feel even more stupid for deleting the rest of my songs! But your comment made me smile and has inspired me to pull my head out of my ass a little further! At least my nose is out now (};-P) So you've got 5 yrs on me, eh? I'm glad you have found some happiness. I had my first year of sobriety on the 21st of Oct and things are slowly coming in to focus. It takes 5 yrs just to get your life back in order, at least that's what the professionals say! Anyhow, I appreciate your wonderful comment.
Ax
lol.. : ) You can't imagine how stupid I've felt here at Mj hahahaha OMG (OhMyGod!!) When I joined here 10 months ago I had no idea this was like the intimateist(sorry for my English) community...I just went here to get a break from "real"life after many hard years(also splitting up from a terrible 4year relationship last Christmas, with a guy who never lissened to Music & had 3 kids-so we had 5 lol) I needed to Heal & moved back to the small town I sorta came from & SETTLED DOWN : )-well at least having quite many years here,I was always moving around earler-) As my two sons finally did get older (in spring they'll be 14 & 16)& I could think more of myself which meaned REST & Lissening to Music here, being a loner for a while(is what I THOUGHT & What I needed)-it was like a Great & Intensive therapy ! LOL I was logged in all the time without knowing it !for weeks I beleive I remember APB was always on the same page as me I didn't understand at all - I didn't even know how to chatL O L ! sending notes to Artists & writingcomments . Like I said I HAD NOOOOO IDEA this was a personal community I just thought it was a place You lissened to Music at, it was a big suprize to me it was, when I saw it was possible to send a note to a MUSICIAN - W O W ( 8 ) !!!!!!!!! I thought You Ladies & Gentlemen got hundreds of notes(!) & probably wouldn't even notice mine.but I said to myself no-one ever died of some positive feedback now did they ?
Eventually I SAW the community here, what a chock to realize I had the whole world in my livingroom as r the reason for coming here was exactly the opposite..started reading what was WRITTEN - It changed my life I-who never have been into making Music or singing realized after hearing & reading alot what I wanted to do with my Life besides taking care of My Sons & what would be POSSIBLE for me to do as I'm abit handicapped because of pain(!) It being hard for me to socialize in 'ordinary' life because of an injury & pain in my body-it's very stressing to have pain all the time & makes You dead tired! sitting down has been hell for me, HERE I could lye down & meet People WOW You know in History(the old Romans, Jesus etc) thats the way they socalized lying down when meeting or eating together : ) I THINK IT*S GREAT !
Here I can relax & be myself - I hope still - talkin my childlanguage makes me feel AT HOME (lived in N.J age 1-9)
I really wish You be well & this years Holidays will be better to You ! ONCE AGAIN THANKYOU FOR YOUR MUSIC I hope You'll put more Music here
I'm deleteing zoiaccount but will be around I JUST LOOOOOVE THIS PLACE ! Wish You a Peaceful & Nicer Next Year

Thanks for dropping by for a listen, Yea, I was in pretty rough shape when I wrote that. I'm glad you liked it! I used to have 7 more tunes up on here, until I let that "melancholy" get the best of me. I need to get busy get something posted and also do some commenting.
Best to you,

I usually can't stand christmas songs, but this one is a keeper. Good job. Your voice is awesome, nothin to worry about there at all. Put more songs up soon.

but about the song..for someone who likes to sound ruff and tuff, your true heart shines in this and i love it. the lyric flow and music are wonderful. the lyrics pierced my heart. u r way too hard on yourself sometimes and is a pity because you bring alot to the table. wish you would repost some your old tunes cos i enjoyed periodic "ax" discoveries!
but back to the song..i really thought the backing vocals nailed things down nicely....all in all top shelf...and heck, i'll buy your car brother...anyroad still listening man still listening
I hope all is well with you I had to come back when U still have one but I think your best (I loved all of yours) song and Bro. hang in there we are here for u..:D)*

But if the truth be known, I had seven more up on here, all instrumental. This is the only one with Vocals and it's a Xmas song, or it would have likely gone to the wayside as well! Looks like I'm starting over. I shan't leave this place..... As long as I have my Mac I'll hang my hat here for without a computer, what would be the point? I have a new tune I need to finish and post. Any how, I truly appreciate your kind words my friend. Thanks for dropping by.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this. I've seen your name around a lot and hope you'll put more up in the future. Cigarette lighters are ablaze. You sing great, but you should give this to the Eagles.

No... I know I'm crazy (};-P) I meant "deeply moved by your comment" Thanks brother! Don't be disconcerted, I'm making this year the best yet! I'm all set to do some serious writing now that my studio is complete.... at least for the time being. I appreciate you dropping in for a listen, means a lot to me.
Ax
dear friend. You have a wonderful singing voice - rich in quality. I can't wait to hear your vocals on your new song, "When She Turned Away". The lyrics are heart wrenching and beautiful as they are also in "Through The Eyes Of A Child". You are a very insightful lyricist, my dear. And despite your surly Scots humour, which always makes me laugh, you have the soul of a romantic poet, and I find your artwork extremely intriguing. I'd like to walk around in the world you created in your imagination. : )

awesome lyrics! inspiring to me, thanks

Here, a year later and once again , in Maycember. Yes, it is catchy, because you play and sing very well. Hopefully, things are looking up for you. There is always hope. Thanks. :)
