Description:
This is the first song of a comedy musical I'm writing, something I've always wanted to do. No vocal yet, but will post as soon as that's done. I'd be interested to know what you think of the choir bit at the end...I acheived it by multi-tracking my own voice god-knows-how-many times, then adding a subtle midi female voice in the background, to make it sound more like a mixed choir. No loops were used, all software instruments thru Garageband.

Hardware:
emac / ekeys midi keyboard / Tascam portastudio / Shure SM58

Software:
Garageband

Love it &mdash 08/16/04 - 03:42:00 PM
I love the banjo. Is that a software instrument? It
parallels the accordion really nice. Castanettes too.
Haven't found those yet.

Great sound and feel.

Go for a less obvious ending.

Hi Troy, yeah the banjo is a software instrument, although it's meant to be a
mandolin! Oh well, banjo, mandolin, who cares! Let's just call it a banjolin. <p>
Glad you like the piece, although the 'obvious' cha cha cha ending kind of fits
in with the lyrics...hopefully you'll see what I mean when I get the vocals done.

Carnival &mdash 08/16/04 - 06:11:40 PM
This has a carnival sound which could easily be a
backdrop for a musical comedy. I see the color and
movement already. Of course the lead voice(s) singing
future lyrics will make or break it. The composition seems
to build in fine fashion from whimsical soliloquy to grand
chorus. Fine job with the multiple layering of your voice.

All its missing... &mdash 08/16/04 - 06:49:17 PM
...is the slide whistle. Good work. The piece is, yeah,
carnival-like. The choir somehow sounds like a midi-
choir-aaah's chior. Mayeb you sang with too much good
intonation. Throw in a couple of old lady voices that stick
out and you'll have an authentic choir sound.

Good composition with good form. Keep it up!

nice composition &mdash 08/17/04 - 10:01:35 AM
I particularly like the way you combine and balance your
sounds when you're using a lot of them -- no small feat
with so many....it's very orchestral. The bass was on the
verge of distortion in the loud sections, though.

Castanettes were a very nice touch.

The only section which sort of let down in intensity was
that brief "calliope" synth solo in the middle, which
sounded a bit tentative and the bottom kinda dropped
out...especially compared to the later loud section with
the chorus.

I *LIKE* the "obvious" ending! It was a logical conclusion
to this comedic piece.

I wish this one was a bit longer! Good job.

nice composition &mdash 08/17/04 - 12:48:06 PM
Thanks for the reply, you're right about the bass distortion, though I'ver no
idea why it did that. It seemed to get worse everytime I mixed it down to iTunes
and re-imported the aiff file back into GB. With such a large orchestration and
such a piddling amount of RAM, that was the only way I could create the piece
with GB grinding to a halt. Anyway, thanks for pointing that one out, though I
was hoping no-one would notice!

nice tune &mdash 08/17/04 - 11:01:46 AM
I enjoyed the playfulness of this... can't wait to hear
the vocal, although it sounds good without!

I Hear This As Some Interlude &mdash 03/08/05 - 05:12:05 AM
in a 1960's mod love story movie. For some reason I am
thinking Anthony Newley.
Good melody and excellent arrangement.
