Description:
I wrote this song in 2005 for my daughter Laura. But today, as I post it here there are two other people I want to mention... Joel Schubert and Rachel Da Ros. May this song bring you a bit of encouragement as you walk the path before you.

Once again, I am the recipient of the talents of others here at MacJams. Roxylee, with her wonderful vocals, and Patrick, with his incredible music soundbed (piano especially), elevate this song way beyond what I could have done alone. Thank you both.

Piano and all keyboard music by Patrick Feehan
Vocals harmonies by Roxylee
Vocal and guitar by Jack Miller

Song art is a photo I took from the cliff above Aptos Beach in the Santa Cruz area.

Lyrics:
Chorus:
To you from His hand D - G - D
To you from His hand D - G - D
At the right time He sends A
His blessing from above G
Tears to joy A
A message of His love G
To you from His hand D - G - D
To you from His hand D - G - D

Verse 1:
Though you walk through the valley D - F#m
And the clouds hide His face G - A
Storms, they may gather D - F#m
And raindrops wet your face G - A

Refrain:
He is with you in the darkness Em - D
Side be side your every step Em - D
Even though your faith may falter Em - D
He is there to hive His best G - A

Verse 2:
He has walked the path before you {chords same as verse 1}
He's acquainted with your pain
Though doubts may cause you trouble
His love remains the same.

To you from His hand.

to have you add your vocals to one of my songs. I especially like your little ad libs here and there. Just perfect additions that fit right in and capture the spirit of the song. Thanks again for joining in on this one.

What I said before... &mdash 05/13/07 - 04:32:30 PM
...still stands...

This is very much in keeping with the Dadai songwriting tradition. A very moving composition, obviously heartfelt, and delivered with honesty and deep feeling...

Patrick's piano playing is particularly lovely, and the vocal blend is simple and uncluttered...

Very sweet and moving...

Heart and music... &mdash 05/13/07 - 04:49:33 PM
I found out a number of years ago that what I sometimes had difficulty expressing in conversation or written word came forth more easily through a song. It was like a door opened. That is when I started writing songs.

Thank you for making mention of Patrick's awesome contribution to this recording. He is one busy guy. That he took the time to add so many keyboard tracks, almost the entire soundbed, to this song was really so much more than I could have hoped for. And his piano playing is pure artistry... it delivers the vocals and seals the song. He is a class act as a musician and a person.

btw... nice new Taylor guitar you got there! Thanks for the pictures.

very nice &mdash 05/13/07 - 06:48:36 PM
a real nice tune. the addition of piano and keyboards really added alot of depth to this. also gives a bit of a dreamy quality. Of course not to forget, some good vocals intertwined.

you drop in Vic. As I said above... thus agreeing with you, the keyboards by Patrick are core to this song. Always a pleasure to work with him and Roxylee.

Which reminds me... it's also a pleasure to work with you. I hope to have something to send to you and Mike in the not too distant. Right now I am nursing my back which I threw out yesterday... ouch! Cheers Captain...

Jack, &mdash 05/13/07 - 08:39:57 PM
Your voice is mellow. Roxylee provides the perfect counterpoint. This arrangement is very luxurious. I mentioned some timing and piano volume issues to you via e-mail. There are some improvements in this mix but it still needs work. In some places the piano is now too loud.

The song has staying power. It is a wonderful melody and the lyrics are simple, honest and articulate. It has been in my head for weeks, ever since running some harmony demos for you early on. I'm sorry I did not act in a timely fashion to make a contribution but the vocals, as they are here, are sufficient to carry this song. I'd like to hear a supportive standup bass line throughout. Patrick's piano threads are outstanding.

There is an overall "soundspace" issue which needs to be addressed. There are bits of haze or curtain in front of some of the passages that need to be opened up. This needs to sound like it is being performed in a sanctuary or a natural amphitheater. Must sound open and wide, whispering and resonant. Roxylee's voice needs to come out a bit more.

Collaborating.... &mdash 05/14/07 - 11:23:04 AM
Sounds like you have some definitive ideas of what you'd like to do with this song. Regarding the vocal timings of Roxylee vs. my lead. That they don't line up exactly in a number of places doesn't bother me. Rather I see her vocals as "backup" harmonies, adding layers of texture, rather than more precise "duet" harmonies. Her vocal interpretations are more of a backdrop to the lead by my way of thinking.

As with all of my songs, the mixing/production qualities have room for improvement. So I am sure you can move the song to a higher level on that front. As you state, the vocals as they are carry the song sufficiently. In fact I think they do so quite well. That is the main reason why I wanted to proceed with this version. And as I also mentioned, I would love to hear your added vocals, as you see fit, knowing that you can bring more to the song in that department also.
Thanks for your thoughts my friend.

All to say... I'll send you whatever you need by way of song files. So, have at it!

I can't say my mix will be any better. Just something I'd like to explore. I am just an amateur who has only scratched the surface of mastering with Logic Express. I would be honored to work on this for you, Jack. Yes, please send your GB files. Humbly, Rich.

Heheh... the chords are something I recently started to do on some of my songs. Seems like it should be up there with the lyrics on some styles of songs.

Thank you for inviting me &mdash 05/14/07 - 07:04:33 PM
Jack, this is a beautiful song with a very positive lyric, being sung from the heart very sweetly and sincerely by the two of you. It was a pleasure to work on, and I hope that came through in what I played.

By the way, having Roxylee sing on this was pure genius. She added *so* much here... The way she felt the song, and delivered something from that feeling that was so very right...

I want to thank everyone who mentioned my playing. I also want to say that this song is obviously about the vocals, and about the lyrics. All I did was to notice the wonderful ingredients that were already there and add a bit of spice I thought might enhance the mixture. Still, I appreciate the nice words.

I get a kind of Jim Reeves vibe from this laid-back song. I think the mood and playing is similar to how his style was.

Your voices seems to flow beautiful together.

Love the piano:)

Hmm ........ &mdash 05/18/07 - 08:51:59 PM
... now I was under the distinct impression that I'd made comments and such here already Jack - but it seems my old guy's memory is playing up (still).
I commented on the P,P & M sound of the song and your performances. Nice playing Patrick - I'm really beginning to appreciate piano lately - and lovely singing Roxylee and Jack. Simple string arrangement, sounds very nice indeed. This one sounds like the 70s folk singer in you Jack. I'll have to start including the chords - I can never recall them past posting : )
Cheers,
Neil

heheh... always nice to have you drop in, Neil. This was a song that has some real personal meaning for me. When Roxylee and Patrick came on board, well... I was really blown away at how the thing turned out. Not a top 40 tune for sure. But at certain times, maybe a keeper. I really appreciate you "remembering" :) and stopping in.

I agree that the harmony vocal and the piano are utterly gorgeous, but I also really like the acoustic guitar.

Very good melody as well.
