Description:
This was a track that Spruce wrote, which was originally called "One Trick Pony." I liked it a bunch, so i asked if he minded if i messed with it. I added some vocals, a melody and some cheesy strings (he did all of the MIDI wizardry). I was going for something like OMD, Depeche Mode or Japan.

Well-done &mdash 05/22/07 - 04:45:38 AM
Good clean production. Vocals are good, but a little overwhelming (on my headphones).
Think it's very nicely done.
Good work.

well actually &mdash 05/22/07 - 10:10:33 AM
the good clean production you're speaking of is spruces work. my end of things is a little shabbier. just got a new mic and i'm trying to perfect getting a decent vocal mix. you're right that the vocals are a little overwhelming at times. thanks for listening and commenting. [ Reply to This ]
Nice sound &mdash 05/22/07 - 06:55:17 AM
I think what you've done here definitely adds to the original, without detracting from its unique personality. Vocal does have that Japan thing going on, or maybe even Gary Numan? Either way, it is rather cool. Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
hey there &mdash 05/22/07 - 10:14:10 AM
thanks for listening. i can see a gary numan vibe now that you mention it. good thing I didn't add a fretless bass with a chorus on it. thanks for listening.
spruce does really catchy electropop, you guys should check out his page. [ Reply to This ]

Good stuff &mdash 05/22/07 - 10:21:09 PM
My initial thought was that the synth background was unsually well done for a track with vocals. Most vocal synthpop is somewhat skimpy on the elaboration of the synth part.
But of course with the history of this track that is not going to be a problem here.
I really like the result. Your vocals are excellent: they fit the instrumental track very well, and are still quite independent of it. Good stuff. [ Reply to This ]
killer &mdash 05/23/07 - 12:51:11 PM
this is great Mike - i don't think you're voice sounds too 80's (touch of Bowie maybe), but I think it really works on this, with some excellent harmonies. really nice work, and a great chorus - you are fast becoming one of my favs here!

i'm glad that you like this. it's really fun to mess around with other peoples songs. spruces stuff is really cool too. i'm baffled at the whole MIDI thing personally. more of a just plug in and do it kind of guy. [ Reply to This ]

Nice job on the vocals here Mike &mdash 05/25/07 - 03:40:02 PM
I know how hard it is to get a good mix. It's almost alchemical it seems to me. I can't find the science in it - each attempt seems to lead to some new approach and I never seem to learn from past mistakes. That's just my experience. Good luck with your new mic - you're off to a great start.
And hidey to Spruce - this is one sweet track. [ Reply to This ]
