Description:
A song about how we live now.

I've had the first line for 10 years but only just got round to writing the rest.

This is a collab with Pete Young, a good friend of mine from the Zoom board.

I did the main backing and added real bass and acoustic guitar to the modified Apple loops and I wrote and sung the verses.

Pete wrote and sang the bridges, did all the harmonies and played all those nice bits on guitar and piano.

Shopgirl Sarah selling shoes in a supermarket shopping store
Sarah doesn't listen to the news
she thinks it's not for her

Sarah goes out Friday night, she likes a drink she likes a laugh
So Saturday sees Sarah wake
with a face she doesn't know

And then in the morning light
Another troubled night
The only place she goes is nowhere
She's asking “Who am I?”
And soon she'll start to cry
This pain is just too hard to bear

Sarah's friends are none too bright, it's fun throwing up Friday night
Sometimes she says she's seen the light
But most the time she's wrong

Sarah wants the perfect man although she doesn't have a plan
'cept standing still with drink in hand
and hope he comes along

She's asking am I really here
Why is this nightmare still so near
Will my redemption be delayed
until I recognise the face
Looking at me from that mirror

So Sarah where do you go from here to finally be free of fear?
forget the wine forget the beer
there's more to life than that

I'm struggling for words to say to help to brighten up your day
You know there is another way
You've just got to think

When a song starts out with "Shopgirl Sarah selling shoes in a supermarket shopping store".....

Nice vocals/harmonies and the bassline with the piano and drums sound like you guys were playing live in a club somewhere. Good performance and really nice production.

Dick, I just figured this out, you're all over the place, man!

Keep it up!

Social commentary to a Moon Dance (the Van Morrison song) beat. I dig it.

Odd thing is &mdash 05/23/07 - 01:10:48 PM
that it didn't start out as social commentary. It was going to be a comical song using as much alliteration as I could get.

Ah well, all worked out in the end :-)

Thanks for the listen.

Cheers

sarah selling seashells to supermarket shoes.

Very smooth Dick. You never seem to amaze me in your song diversity. This has your best singing i've heard from you. very professional.

Diversity'r'us &mdash 05/25/07 - 04:30:04 AM
To be honest it's because of what my wife calls my "total lack of any co-ordinated style". Everything I do is just a mish-mash and I simply can't settle on any one style. My dress sense drives her to distraction and my cooking is best described as ecelectic.

Thanks a lot though :-)

Strange that this laid back stuff didn't reflect the circumstances of its birth.

Thanks

Sneaky little beast ... &mdash 05/24/07 - 12:34:18 PM
... this song us (er, sounds like Yoda). I really nice chilled groove guys, mellow, but with a bite in the lyric. Your range Astounds me Dick - you're a master of all styles you turn you hand to.

Will my redemption be delayed ... killer line.

I've no idea why, but this track brings The Police to mind, god nows why.

Great stuff, and just the right length.

Jack of all trades &mdash 05/25/07 - 05:42:23 AM
Master of none but thanks for the kind words.

I've never done this sort of stuff before and I'm only just finding what my voice can and can't do (pity it's taken 25 years ;-) ) I really appreciate the comments, it's nice to get feedback of any kind but positive is very welcome.

I've got a heavy rock sea shanty lined up in the next month or so to confuse the issue still further.

Thanks :-)

Dick

Oh and I forgot, Pete wrote and sang the bridges so his is the "redemption line"

Sorry, pal.... &mdash 05/25/07 - 05:54:38 AM
...paid more attention to the music than lyrics first go round. Just read/listened again...

...I can only HOPE that Ava doesn't get on Sarah's train. I knew that life all too well...

...you're right: the music belies the intent. But that makes it that much more powerful when you really listen to what's being said....

Interesting &mdash 05/25/07 - 07:08:27 AM
Hmmm that gives me an idea to write the most banal lyrics ever and give them a serious introverted treatment.

Something to do on holiday next week :-)

Thanks

I've got a couple in the fire I'm hoping to get at least one done by Tuesday.

Have fun. Sounds like a very cool project...

STALKING WALKING BASS &mdash 05/25/07 - 07:25:22 AM
Had me right away with the Bass and the Brushes.

Perfect placement of the Vocal in the Mix, warm, clear, and well seated.
The doubled Vox at the end is very cool and makes the Lyric bigger.

Lyrics are top notch.
I remember the club scene in NYC and the heartbreaking beauties looking for life beyond the bars.

Smooth Mix and Sound Stage.
Fine Song, well produced.

very best regards,
Coop

The wonders of loops &mdash 05/25/07 - 08:01:53 AM
Walking bass and brushes are modified GB loops. There's a real bass in there as well with some of the drum fills in real time. I view using loops like this as simply working with a bassist and drummer :-)

Appreciate the comments.

I rarely go into the town centre on weekend nights as it's populated by Sarahs and their male equivalents. My Sarah knows there's something more but doesn't quite have the intellectual equipment to work out what it is.

I hope she finds her way.

Cheers

Dick

THAT'S IT &mdash 05/25/07 - 07:37:26 AM
As Steve pointed out - The Police. Couldn't quite put my finger on it.
It's the "feel" and the darker part of the Lyric that does it. The Cool, The Weary and Wise contrasts more than the Sonic package itself - not at all derivative, as the Cool Jazz was not a mainstay for Sting, as I recall.

Walking &mdash 05/27/07 - 07:26:44 AM
Love the walking bass. Now I feel like I went for a walk with Sarah. Excellent setting for a melancholy story. Thanks for putting this together.
