Two tunes in one &mdash 05/22/07 - 11:47:35 PM
You seem up on the music of yore. This is a fun piece incorporating two styles of medieval music. The surfers brawl and the castle class pavon (sp?). It would be interesting if you could choreograph a dance with this music and provide video attached. Or are you doing so?
Great live sound. I think I'll have an earful of your other works. Thanks for the memories. I'm taking this one home with me also. Anon [ Reply to This ]
Dance video? &mdash 05/23/07 - 01:51:42 PM
Now that's an interesting idea.
Unfortunately I don't know enough about historic dance. I only do ballroom and swing.
And I like to leave things to people's own imagination. To me, the music mostly just _is_. The little description of the person about whom this song is, is all you're going to get from me.

wow &mdash 05/23/07 - 12:04:38 AM
that is really cool. the melody is really cool with the tambourine, and then you switch to the other section out of nowhere; i wasn't expecting that. really nice. you're really good with the tambourine too (especially at the end). [ Reply to This ]
Out of nowhere &mdash 05/23/07 - 01:55:10 PM
Thanks for the compliments.
Actually, the slow middle section does not come quite out of nowhere: it's the same theme as the opening, but in minor, and with double note values.
I think I actually designed it that way; this piece is essentially a long improvisation. The repeat and the da capo were inserted later, but most of the material is stream of consciousness.

Excellent piece. Captured the style and sound of the period really well.
Nice playing and a good tone from those recorders.

Renaissance hot spot &mdash 05/23/07 - 10:22:10 AM
Very nicely written and performed piece of music. I've two minor suggestions... (1) it seemed that the bass recorder (the one that first starts the piece) is recorded a bit "hot", and possibly compressed a bit, it sounds almost unnaturally "loud" and slightly distorted/harsh in the recording, and (2) I'd suggest one more second of pause (to let the dancers change position) for the slower dance section, though you could have a slow tam beat to bridge into it. Other than that, this is a delight. Amazingly realistic sounding lute and Krumhorn... hard to find good krumhorn players, they are all playing those new-fangled oboes these days.

Insightful as always &mdash 05/23/07 - 12:55:08 PM
Thanks for your comments.
Controlling levels in classical music is something I still need to work on. There is some gentle compression (1:2 at most) on the instruments to get rid of some peaks. I'll take another look. Btw, the opening recorder is a tenor. The bass doubles it at the suboctave in the slow section.
Krumhorns: just come to Austin next week for the great Krumhorn conclave. 20, 30 krumhorns easily. All part of the Texas Toot. Myself I don't own any Krumhorns, but a friend has a complete matched set. Strange instruments. Each individual sounds like a fart, but a couple of them together are actually sonorous.

I really enjoy recorder music - love all sorts of whistles, but lack the classical experience to do anything interesting with the ones I have. I also like the song description.
Lovely stuff!

I think this piece is going to be another movement in a planned "Courtly Suite" of pieces. Check out my previous track for my first effort. Each piece is going to describe some character at a fictitious court, several centuries ago.

It wasn't your dinging my loopidity so much as my skills as a musician! Thats what torqued me off! Everyone has their own opinion! Apparently you know nothing of "bipolar disorder" or you would have understood what I was trying to convey. I apologize for the anal comment comment and would like to start over. I don't want to be enemies. I didn't expect everyone to like it. Best to you. [ Reply to This ]

In keeping with the medieval spirit, you are building the list of songs and providing the elements. For me, this is sweet whistle with the right backing sound; sorry, what do I know?
Thanks for sharing this lively piece, a fun listen, Vic.

This is not what I expected &mdash 05/29/07 - 06:50:33 AM
and I am really pleasantly surprised. Great work on the arrangement and playing - ditto the recording. When I was a kid I made a short animated film using tarot cards and midieval dance music. I was really into it from a Deutsche Gramaphone record I owned. You've captured the spirit of the dance and the freewheeling fun of the genre. Good fun. [ Reply to This ]
Henry VIII &mdash 05/30/07 - 08:04:05 AM
Victor,
You must come to London, I'll take you to Hampton Court Palace. The home of Henry VIII.
I think that your music would revererate nicely in there and the Old King would smile down at you. Lovely tune.

Yet another great piece that I'm irritated with myself for discovering a week late. Why is it that every time I overlook a piece Faelin always has the first comment? I think it's time for some friendly competition between him and me. Anyway, Vic, very nice tune here. I have a very large gap in my musical knowledge that I've been trying to fill. Namely, how the hell did we get from Gregorian chant to Bach's polyphony? What happened in that thousand years? Thanks for giving me two minutes of music inspired by The Lost Era. Love the soprano/recorder/flute/whatever. The lute part is very cool as written but doesn't sound that great tonally. [ Reply to This ]
Faelin &mdash 06/01/07 - 02:06:01 AM
In this case he won the competition with you because I let him. In a chat he told me the names of his daughers; I used the name of the elder of the two for this piece. So I sent him a note when I put it up.
The road from monophony to Bach's polyphony is a long and winded one, with lots of stuff in between that sounds strange to our modern ears. Perotinus Magnus (12th century) is very weird, and Machaut (14th?) is more modern but still far removed from the sounds that we're used to. They didn't use chords the way we use them, and when they use chords, things like dominants are alien to them. The logic behind their "chord progressions" (really , those don't exist in that era) is entirely different from ours.
This piece claims to be renaissance, and maybe the melody is, but the harmonizations are really more baroque, with some solid anachronisms thrown in. However, I don't claim to be authentic. I just want to evoke an era that's far past, and judging by your comments, I seem to be succeeding.
Thanks for listening and commenting,
Victor.

Yes &mdash 06/01/07 - 02:18:12 AM
There's definitely a baroque element to this. And there's also a 21st century Apple computer element to it. Nobody's saying something has to be "authentic". I mean if we're gonna be music purists then my music isn't heavy metal except when I'm playing Black Sabbath songs. But yeah, I did notice this piece seems to have a Renaissance-sounding melody and instrumentation with a more baroque groove and harmonic structure. I like it. Of course I like just about any music that claims baroque inspiration. I'm a big J.S. Bach fan. [ Reply to This ]

charming &mdash 07/04/07 - 06:39:17 PM
Great recorder ensemble playing, nice full sound.
The soundfonts blend very well, good overall balance in the mix.
I particularly like the short, punctuated-note theme at the beginning and again after the slow section. Great writing and execution.
The symmetry with the fast/slow/fast sections makes for enjoyable listening. The middle part was a welcomed change of pace, adding much variety to the piece. Those renaissance forms are so timeless!
Thanks again for calling my attention to both pieces. Impressive! [ Reply to This ]

Composer? &mdash 07/06/07 - 06:13:44 PM
First, let me apologize for not noticing this earlier. I love renaissance music. I've taught renaissance counterpoint for years, and whenever I do I'm in heaven. I also played renaissance lute for some time, reading tablature, and have played renaissance lute music on guitar (solo, duos, and song accompaniment) for something like 30 years. So... if you post more renaissance music and don't hear from me, feel free to send me a note to let me know.
You've done a really impressive job combining real instruments with virtual ones. I find this very enjoyable, and very well done. It was obviously a lot of work, and a labour of love.
I am not crazy about that lute sound... Not much you can do about that when it's a sample, but perhaps someone would be interested in doing a collab with you, and playing the lute part on classical guitar? Not sure if that would interest you or not. I'm probably being too picky, though.
I am curious about who wrote this... You don't give a composer's name, so I'm wondering if this is your own music, written in a renaissance style? Either way, very interesting music, and I'm really pleased to have heard it. [ Reply to This ]
Mine! All mine! &mdash 07/06/07 - 07:46:54 PM
Thanks for listening and for the compliments.
This piece (and Fredo's Chanson, which you've also listened to) are compositions of mine. Exercises in creative anachronism....
This will be a cycle of pieces depicting various personages at a renaissance court. Except that I'm going for medieval imagery, and to be honest, the music is more baroque. Did you notice that my trills are baroque? Renaissance didn't know trills like this; you could ornament but only strictly in meter.
You also noticed the anchronistic chords, especially in the other track: diminished chords and things like Am followed by G/A (G with A in the bass). That's my pop background showing through.
So in all it's a decidedly modern re-imaging of the renaissance and its music.
I agree with you on the lute sound: it's too aggressive. I should push it further back in the mix at least. I do know a lute player or two around town, and I should show this to them. My lute parts are of course played on a keyboard controller, so I have no idea how hard they would be to play on a real lute.
Thanks again, and I'll let you know about upcoming installments in this cycle.
Victor.

Victor, I take it you've had the music training in your storied past (along with playing drums in the streets of Calcutta for alms). Really an exceptional composition. Not something I'd tune into normally, but one that I can recognize as being assebled with great skill and talent. [ Reply to This ]

As I began to listen and looked at the graphic (it's where I always start on a song page:), I was thinking this child didn't get to go, heh, then I read your description lol
You have become quite practiced with your wind stuff, eh? How long? The change-up is quite good and fluent. Perhaps by tradition, a piece like this would be so short - I am enjoying it enough I keep having to hit the replay again.
Plus, I had to come back for a second helping of comment - LOL Truly though, when I left this place for a while, I lost all my fav's, so I go back exploring songs in places. Glad I came back here...

very jolly &mdash 06/08/08 - 02:37:35 PM
though poor old Autumn must have got very confused with that six bar section,[well approximately six bars anyway!] which expired at about 0:35 - or would they have had to have specially choreographed the dance around that part?

Beautiful &mdash 06/23/08 - 06:42:16 AM
A lovely piece, Victor. I enjoyed the description, also. I like the little hesitation-ritard at the end of some phrases. The picture on this page is also very affecting. I have two daughters, and it makes me think of them.
It is very pleasant to hear the various sizes of recorders playing in harmony. And after teaching recorder to 4th-graders for several years, never getting much past B-A-G, I am enjoying hearing how it's supposed to sound.
That mic of yours really does a terrific job. [ Reply to This ]
