Song Description

This tune is for the 4th Loop It Or Lose It Challenge.

Notes about what I did:

Challenge Loop - LIOLI 4 Piano
I played this loop on Grand Piano, Tango Accordion, and Hybrid Basic: Breath Pad. It's cut apart at the 2, 6, 10, and 14th beats, and then each chunk is transposed variously. I kept messing with the transpositions until it sounded reasonably fusion-jazz-like.

Challenge Loop - Locomotive
I hacked it to bits. Some portions were also modified with Auto Wah, pitch shifting.

Loop - Funky Pop Bass 03
This loop is severely extended and modified.
I played this on the Electric Bass software instrument, augmented with Digital Mono: Sine Bass.

Loop - Deep House Dance Beat 05

Loop - 80's Pop Beat 08
It's played through Amp Sim: British Clean and flanged.

Loop - Cuban Son Percussion 14

Loop - Cuban Dance Beat 046

~~~~~~~~
The tempo of the bells set the tempo of the song at 137 BPM. The voice-over was the very last element I added. Coincidentally, the voice-over seems to have a similar tempo (or perhaps 69 BPM).
Lyrics:
You are getting sleepy... sleepy... very sleepy
Your eyes are getting heavy... very heavy
They are closing... closing... closing
Your eyes are closed
You are comfortable
You are now sound asleep... in a most comfortable place
I will now count to three
And then snap my fingers
At that moment
You will be under my power
You will do as I command
Ready?
One... Two... Three
You are completely under my control
What happened? Where am I? &mdash 05/23/07 - 08:28:25 PM
I was taking a trip on a train and some hypnotist guy came up to me and said stuff and things. When I woke up, I was in Guam.
:P
Guam surprises me. now Shanghai i would have understood... :-)
Smokey - you've lost it &mdash 05/23/07 - 11:05:38 PM
or found it - or reinvented it. I guess all three and quite few more. Love the vocal - what a whack idea. Back in the late sixties my brother had a hypnotist LP we used to listen to when we were tr*pp*ng. I'm flashing.
i blame lateral thinking.
i was looking for a voice-over, and when i came across the goofy hypnotic induction, i lost it. so i knew i found it. the use of words like "power" and "control" made sense.
Too Freakin' Cool &mdash 05/24/07 - 12:57:01 PM
This is an absolute hoot... is that you on the voice, or did you team up with the villian Maximilian Pegasus from the early YuGiOh episodes? I always loved that guy.
This is so out-of-the-box (but also solid and musically precise) that I'm blown away. You always seem to find ways of redefining these LIOLI challenges into uncharted territory...
I just hope I don't start clucking like a chicken in public without knowing it. Hypnotists...
the voice is the cliche_hypno.wav from FreeSound. the delivery was intentionally over the top, but i couldn't stop chuckling so it had to go into this song.
when i previewed my first rough mix and got to the final "You are completely under my control" i burst out laughing - that sealed the deal.
Great work!
well, maybe.
the self-contradiction of sleeping and hearing a pounding train/dance beat is kind of odd. although repetitive sounds, no matter how loud, could probably lull me to sleep eventually.
Hey Smokey... &mdash 05/24/07 - 04:14:15 PM
I managed to stay wide awake throughout this! Haha...
Very creative! And downright hilarious! Way to rise to the challenge man!
Be well!
nice &mdash 05/24/07 - 06:24:57 PM
one. i love the vocals, could be a lost Marc Almond song (or maybe Yello). I like how you cut and paste everything. What is the wind sound?
[ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:26:29 PM
the vocals came from cliche_hypno.wav at FreeSound.
i'm guessing the wind you are asking about is the train steam sound processed through the Auto Wah effect in GarageBand, and then gated to sound vaguely like a cartoonish snoring person.
Now I Know &mdash 05/24/07 - 10:52:12 PM
Now I Know why conductors always had a watch... the trains were not running on time, it was all an illusion. How Deputy doofy got to Guam we'll never know. Fun time pice on a chain
[ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:30:07 PM
that picture happened well after the song was done. one day it struck me that the swinging pendulum from cliche hypnosis and train conductor watches was a unifying concept (actually a nice excuse) for joining the two ideas together in the first place.
Hey porter, wake me at Dixie! &mdash 05/25/07 - 08:00:58 PM
I love the creak as a rhythm element. Strange... I don't feel sleepy. Great rhythm breakdown leading into "you are comfortable," especially the gate on steam sound. Your choice for a bass line really turns on the groove. The voice over is a riot!
I await your further instructions...
[ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:35:11 PM
that creak sound was the first thing that caught my ear when listening to the train sample. i was trying to dial it down to lead into the "sleep" portion of the induction - i guess it worked. the gated steam was supposed to be like someone snoring. the bass line was driven by trying to use a House rhythm and bass, since the piano loop seemed to be House.
One of these days I will write a song that makes people have a physical reaction other than a headache. This "song" is having some weird effects on me, man.
oops, sorry.
listen carefully: i will count to three and snap my fingers. at that time you will feel completely normal again. the weird effects will be gone. and send me money via PayPal.
ready? one two three *SNAP*
Fun &mdash 05/26/07 - 08:47:11 AM
Clever lyrics Smokey. Not sure how you did that to the train sounds, but you really made excellent use of the train! Fun stuff!!! Thanks for sharing.
[ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:41:37 PM
well, they're not actually my lyrics, but you can blame me for using them out of context.
basically i spent a ton of time chopping up the train sounds into little loop-sized pieces.
when built up the mix, i ended up only using some of them. towards the end there's something like 8 separate train loops all going at once...
[ Reply to This ]
I hadn't realized that... &mdash 05/26/07 - 11:00:53 AM
...the latest Loop It or Lose It contest was based on a train loop...
I love the creaking sound as part of the train sound... It reminds me a bit of Cydniko's 'Strange African Train', as did one of the other offerings, and it also reminds me of some of the ghostly creaky sounds in the the original 'Myst'...
Speaking as a guy who has a bit of hypnosis training, it's funny to hear this sort of warped induction as a musical element...
Very imaginative....
Ed
i've never been hypnotized, so i have no idea how far off this fake one is from the "real thing" - care to comment?
part of what makes me laugh about it is the image, as from a poor movie, of the evil hypnotist casting his spell on an innocent damsel so he can have his way with her...
somehow that image fits the whole train/dance motif - the train is a sort of raw power to be controlled. and i think people are in awe of trains because they're huge and there's a sort of fear about the consequences if they get out of control. or something like that. maybe you should comment on that too! :-)
Hypnotic ;) &mdash 05/26/07 - 11:44:58 AM
I very much enjoyed the use of the train as percussion and the vocal.
I think I need to go out for a walk now so that I don't fall asleep at my keyboard.
the train really took over this project - the piano loop was just glue to help hold it together (maybe like duct tape).
thanks &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:54:46 PM
thanks everyone for you comments
i'm glad you enjoyed this project - i had a blast doing it!
i tried to answer your questions individually - let me know if i missed yours.
FreeSound is a great resource, not only the train, but the "hypnotist" came from there. and i've been incorporating several other sounds from that site in my other songs - it's a lot of fun - i urge you to try it for yourself.
finally, lots of thanks to Bud for coordinating this LIOLI. he did good!
Well Done! &mdash 06/03/07 - 11:18:11 AM
Every time I listen to this, I think I've figured it out, then I go to post this comment, and yet again I've lost my "Train" of thought! Could it be "post" hypnotic suggestion to avoid illiciting a "Yikes!" reply? Is being repeatedly hypnotized by Smokey Svengali dangerous to your health? Well done!, or at least I think so - it's all a little hazy.
glad you liked the intro - this song was mostly created backwards from the train loops at the end and all the stuff leading up to that. so the intro ended up having little hints of elements that come into play later on. whatever works, i guess.
i've often wondered whether novel writers and screenwriters really start from the ending and work backwards to chapter one from there...
thanks!
