Description:
This is my entry to the LIOLI #4.

I would like to thank Bud for motivating me to attempt this. If it really sucks please point your finger at him. Totally kidding Bud.

I decided to play off the train sounds. Abstractly i created the crowd boarding and the train ride.

I had a older tune that had been posted way back when. It was among a bunch others I dumped during a spring clean out, also sometime ago. I almost forgot about it until this came about. i was able to use parts of it plus added/subtrated and build from it as well. The train clips should be self evident.

Plus, i emulated a lot of train sounds on guitars as well.

The loop that is required. i turned into the crowd and female voices also a deep train sound thats goes by every now and then. In addition the some other noises going on.

I also added some synth playing for the heck of it.

this is rad, it's also totally unlike you. i love it. who knew you were such the loop master. it's almost like a scene in TJ Hooker, when they are looking for info from an informant who hangs out in a bikini bar. awesome.

damn &mdash 05/23/07 - 10:41:30 PM
your right, i need a bikini bar in this. well maybe the next loop it contest. I figured this may come as a bit of a shock. Theres stuff i do that doesn't get posted or I never got a round to finishing. All in fun!

vic - am waaaay impressed - that was a pleasure to witness. you set up a really cool mood. loved the panned burst of steam accents thru-out. are you saying the piano loop is in this but you're using other voices? this is very creative. you always have nifty graphics, too. bravo, brother!

Thanks Anne &mdash 05/23/07 - 10:49:23 PM
The voices was the piano loop. I also hacked it up for single voice hits. the loop was also used for the passing rumble swoosh as well and a few other effected noises. Oddly i was originally going to do a r&b thing.

Thanks for listening. Appreciate it!

really dig the vibe - what a great beat you've cooked up - and the textures are outrageous. I'm really happy you hopped on the train.

Got you to thank... &mdash 05/24/07 - 08:00:15 PM
for me attempting something. I'm glad you picked a locomotive sound bite to use. that influenced me and i could see the possibilties to play off of it!

Really glad you dug. Ended up being a lot of fun!

Did someone say "Diesel" powered?! &mdash 05/23/07 - 11:34:23 PM
Ok, this tune grooves like crazy. That's good. And you're using compressed air for drums. That's really good. And it has a screaming guitar solo. What more could one want?

Very nice stuff, with great textures.

Funny, for that you get the engineer cap. Of course it's been kicked around of adding a bikini bar.

Thanks Vic. I appreciate your listen!

Techno Soundtrack &mdash 05/24/07 - 01:53:49 AM
Like Michael mentioned, this sounds different from what we've heard from you before, which is cool. I understand about the backlog of stuff that isn't finished.
So what's the light at the end of the tunnel? :)
I bet I dream of trains tonight.

[ Reply to This ]
You know &mdash 05/24/07 - 08:18:05 PM
how you listen to inatimate things and hear a rythm or sound that sets you off? the train sound bite told me.

At the end of the tunnel I think we will be serving steamed clams and hot lava worms at the bikini bar back in the caboose. Thanks Bill.

I was lost at the beginning on what to do until i heard my train a comin'. I'm not one to do loops. But i was fortunate enough to rethink it in a different context.

Really appreciate you climbing on board for the ride.

I'll decide what to do about the female android when I see her in good light first. Then we can all meet up at the bikini bar. It's always fun to emulate different objects on guitars.

Appreciate your riding along!

Wow! What a surprize! This really does sound anthemic. I think I agree with Michael2's TJ Hooker comment...But you should be careful about adding a bikini bar...it might not mix well with those frequent blasts of steam!

Be well bro!

Come on Mike, you want the bikini bar just like everyone else. We can also sit in the baggage car and play guitars like the beatles did in a hard days night. Theres a lot of train songs we could play :-)

great stuff Vic - the guitars sound awesome on this, and the production is great - i love the panned steam bursts on this. This is really different for you, but a fantastic track - the guitar playing is some of your best yet. sexy and funky - what's the address of that bikini bar?

Steve

Thanks Steve &mdash 05/24/07 - 08:51:31 PM
I just decide to play like a train. And just imagined going on a ride. Theres a lot of wierd things that i've done but never finished or posted. The train sound bite got me rolling down the right track.

The bikini bar has been added in the back. It's being decked out in a 1940's hawaiin theme. That means a lot of umbrella drinks!

Wow... &mdash 05/24/07 - 01:07:20 PM
I always suspected that steam engines would have fit into Blade Runner... the relentless beat that hammers away underneath it all is really moves the mood. And that guitar...

Awesome ride, Vic. Sinister and overcrowded, steam hammers, androids and hell, yeah, a bikini bar!

Just listened to you song. really enjoyed it. guitars and trains go together. I originally was going to do something based on the loop but the train sound track spoke to me.

And yes a bikini bar in the caboose!

Thanks Rik!

Cool train music, and tasty put together. Nice fuzz train groove from the guitars. Could be a cool soundtrack to some action movie...

I've used freehand for years, but have changed to illustrator after adobe sort of took over macromedia and stuff. Do they still develop new versions of freehand?

they haven't done nothing since the buyout. They don't promote it either. so who knows what they plan on doing. I've used since version 1 and use it everyday at work. It will be a sore day if it is dropped

most excellent &mdash 05/24/07 - 04:42:39 PM
holy cow! this is way intense - it has all the power that a locomotive symbolizes!

i'd say Industrial if someone forced me to pick a genre - yet there are lots of other influences in here too

those voices sounds are freaky - and the guitar work is just right

most excellent!!!

thanks

I knew i could play off the train sound track. so i took that route. those voices where the piano loop run through a different synth. and jst add some bangin and clangign on the guitars before i knew it the trpi was over

Thanks for giving it a listen

Usually i have little snippets of some odd guitar stuff in the songs. This one gave me a little more room to color it a bit different and use some tricks that didn't have to be in a song context. This tends to be a bit more of what i do when I'm just playing around.

Thanks again, totally loved your new song that's posted.

Do you think i should take out a line or two? :-)

You're right the tone on the solo does remind me also of "who's that lady". I may have used a Big Muff setting through my pedal board.

And look who's talking about doing something different. Thanks Dick!

Post industrial psychedelic train time! &mdash 05/26/07 - 11:04:46 AM
Yeah... that sounds like we could blame a Big Muff for some of that...

I love the sustain-y solo. I hope you tied some scarves to your arms and legs before playing...

Great rhythmic underpinning in the 'sounds' and the bass-line... ties it all together...

This is a fun one, Vic... Headphone heaven...

industrial psychedelia &mdash 05/26/07 - 03:07:24 PM
theres a new gendre! I still have a big muff i bought back in '74. but it's way to noisy to record with.

When don't i wear those scarves. But, a box fan is also required for the whole blowing in the wind effect. Also standing on a stack of Marshall amps hieghtens the experience as well. This was really fun to play around with.

Thanks Ed!

neo industrial tribal music &mdash 05/26/07 - 10:36:16 PM
That's how I would describe this. A wonderful combination of industrial might, textural voices assembled in an almost tribal-inspired style of chanting, and the cries of human anquish expressed by the screaming guitar .... or to put it another way ... this song kicks a**.
Good stuff

I was really busy with other things when the LIOLI came up this time around so I don't have an entry in this round. Yeah some knob and dials got the treatment here. I had some parts that i deleted, they where really off the wall. i had a voice turn into a slide whistle, funny sounding but over the top. the loop i used with a couple different synths and hacked up parts of that as well.

i appreciate you giving it a listen. it was a fun project to take on.

You've been gone too long when the bullet hits the bone &mdash 05/31/07 - 11:27:33 AM
There's always something happening at this station. You've given every moment of this song some detail to capture the listener's attention. This is like a marriage between Golden Earring (definitely a "Twilight Zone" vibe) and Skinny Puppy. Great opening moments and the thumping bass nails the rhythm right to the floor. Nice use of the synth voices to create transitions in the song even where the rhythm remains constant. Love the effected guitar solos!

A true master of collage! Really Great!
I like your attitude!
Only critic: the mix is a bit too much separated.
Try to fill all the spots from -45 to 45. Give each instrument/noise it's own place. I'm sure it will uplift it even more!
